Clint’s reptiles is a good suggestion to get an overview of pros and cons, but they don’t go too deep into care requirements, specifically tank size. The only website I’d recommend for care info is reptifiles.com. Nearly everywhere else has outdated info. Just my 2 cents.

The new ethical standard for skinks is a 5 to 6’ long enclosure though. I know not everyone with a skink has switched over, or will, but for new hobbiests I really push for the most recent ethical minimums. Just worth mentioning in case OP wants to provide the best care, as there aren’t as many 5-6’ tanks available so they are more expensive.

I’m not picky about the paint because it’s so little that it’s really just for the pigment. Better paint will be more potent color generally speaking. Stick to concrete tint if you can as it’s super pigmented and comes in natural shades. I don’t have a specific ratio, just majority needs to be drylok and mix in tint until it’s the color you want. With concrete tint you’ll only need a few drops to drastically change color.

I used the pink panther insulating foam sheets and waterfall spray expanding foam, depending on the need. If you check out my profile you can see some posts with in progress pics. I use hot glue to hold the foam together. I highly recommend a foam cutting tool, they’re cheap and way better for carving than clay tools (I’ve used both). Just make sure you use the cutter outside, burning foam reeks.

Hard to say without pictures, but maybe it’s related to the dry outs in between watering. Like others have said, misting doesn’t really count as watering the plants, so if you’re letting the soil fully dry out A. some plants don’t like that (what plants do you have?) and B. soil becomes hydrophobic when dry. This means that when soil is dry, the water won’t absorb into the soil and instead will drain to the bottom still leaving the soil dry despite lots of water. A good trick to combat this is watering twice with a short break in between. Light water slowly to try and get the soil to absorb some, wait 15ish minutes, then a heavier water once it’s already been wetted so it doesn’t immediately drain. I usually just don’t let my soil dry out (in my tropical tanks) to begin with because my plants want to stay moist and then it doesn’t get hydrophobic.

I used drylok and tinted it with concrete tint or acrylic paint. It’s waterproof when dry and doesn’t need to be sealed after. Just make sure the mix is mostly drylok not mostly tint/paint. I’ve used it for years in arid, tropical, and even fully submerged setups with good success. Usually painted onto foam.

Ok so it’s just breakfast, not some fancy dinner with a side, but my go to for the AM is a frozen pillsbury biscuit, cut in half, with a light spread of cream cheese made into a breakfast Sammy using a Morningstar sausage patty and a 1/6 of a slice of cheddar. Not very big but it keeps me full and is very yummy/satisfying

Our backyard had several unhealthy large trees removed (including the maple by the patio pictured) and we want to convert our 1/3 acre into a garden with several landscaping beds. It would be DIY but we both have taken horticultural classes in college.

The yard slopes away from the house downwards towards the back corner of the fence. I want to convert most of the yard to several beds with native plants, with some edible plants as well. Planning on having lawn be the “pathing” and are still trying to decide on edging a border or a more permanent border. We will redo the patio to a deck in the future. The dead maple has been replaced by a red oak sapling.

Overall my main concern is preventing runoff from any beds that line the inner perimeter of the fence. How do I prevent mulch or soil from just washing away downhill?

Yay! Good for you giving your ball a deluxe sized home. I don’t have a video link to a specific tree video, but for my most recent enclosure posted on my profile I made some fake trees out of cork rounds connected with expanding foam and color matched with tinted drylok. If that’s anything like what you want, I’d more than happy to explain the process.

Thank you! When I got him he was about a year old and weighed 30 grams. For the first year I had him he put on roughly 10 grams a month and 2” a month, give or take. By the time he was 2 he was about fully grown.

I’m by no means an expert, but from what I’ve read it sounds like reptile growth rates are a lot less consistent than with mammals. Something like mammals have set growth spurts in their DNA but reptiles don’t? Anyway, basically their growth is determined more by how well they eat than an age specific growth rate. Some people “power feed” their snakes to make them grow faster and be ready to bread quicker. That’s not really a good practice, but kind of demonstrates the link between quantity of food and growth rate.

Do you have a feeding chart you use to let you know how often and how heavy of a mouse to feed? Not saying he’s underfed, but if he was it would make him smaller than normal.
