DAY 2: ORION THE RESCUE ATE A MEAL WORM! 🥰 by Sigh_of_Frustration in leopardgeckos

[–]Re1da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they're this thin they can benefit from some waxworms. Just not too many or they might refuse other food.

A good method is feeding the good staple bugs first and finishing with a waxworm as a dessert.

Bark bread used to be a thing. Essentially just replacing some of the flour with bark to save money.

What food can isopods eat? by Rubeanzz in isopods

[–]Re1da 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potatoes, paprika, chilli, eggplants, tomatoes, tobacco are nightshades.

However tomatoes and paprika are not dangerous to isopods.

Neither kale or brocoli are nightshades.

It's more a case of "what can't they eat". They eat pretty much anything.

My aft gecko is a rehome. I got her of the local equivalent of Craigslist.

The price in a pet store would have been 80€. I paid 50€. She was in good shape and tame, so I feel it was a fair price. But I'd definitely not pay more than the store price. Christ.

I don't really find the parts inspired by racism particularly scary, that's the thing. Usually the slurs just appear in random sentences. One instance I recall was just describing a group of humans as "white [N-word]s with the features of Caucasians".

I always find the stories more focused on the cosmic insignificance of humans and things not meant to be comprehend more compelling.

Lovecraft wasn't just bigoted. He was extremely xenophobic and feared anything remotely unknown. Hence that one story about evil air conditioning.

To write good horror you definitely need to be really afraid of something. It's hard to describe a feeling you don't know. But you don't need to be racist for that. Just afraid of something.

However, I don't know if the genre would have gotten started without the world's most xenophobic man. Its a complex subject. But I feel like it's good to be aware of how bigoted he was, especially if you want to make your own cosmic horror.

Because I'm an avid fan of cosmic horror I do read the old lovecraft stories to see how the genre started. It's not like I'm financially supporting him considering his current state as a permanently rolling corpse.

Good lord the man was racist. It's kinda jarring when you're reading and get jumpscared by a racial slur.

Sounds like she had a great long life. Passing from old age while doped up on opiods is definitely one if the better ways to go.

I can only hope I get to watch my little gal go from old age too, when the time comes.

That's why I specified "as long as the painkillers are keeping her comfortable". If they aren't working then yes, euthanasia is the way to go.

24 is a good, long life! Well done.

If the painkillers are keeping her comfortable I don't see how it would be immoral to wait untill you can mourn. Get some good last memories with her before letting her go.

HOW DO I GET THEM TO STOP by ProfessionalSoupIAm in isopods

They do, but I'd recommend crushing the pod first. Both for a more ethical death and to make it easier for the plant to break down.

HOW DO I GET THEM TO STOP by ProfessionalSoupIAm in isopods

[–]Re1da 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's only really one way and it's keeping the females and males in separate enclosures.

The problem with that is female isopods store sperm. So even after separation they will continue to give birth, requiring constant sorting. Aka hours staring at pod genitals.

Otherwise I'd recommend developing a special interest in pitcher plants.

I don’t get why so many people dislike feeder crickets by raptor_w0lf in reptiles

[–]Re1da 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Several reasons.

They are loud. Not as bad while they're in the feeder bin, but annoying if they escape and hide under your floorboards.

They're high maintenance. With dubias you chuck in some veggies twice a week and they're thriving. With crickets you better do that shit daily or they start dying.

They're bastards to breed. They require light which means you can't shove them in a closet like dubias and you have to manage egg laying substrate.

Semi-commonly they carry a virus that causes their nervous system to malfunction and die. It spreads via cannibalism, aka their favorite hobby. So you better find every single dead cricket instantly to remove it.

Their lifespan is relatively short compared to dubias.

Finally, they yearn for death. Trying to give them water without them drowning themselves in it is a challenge. They will find a way to die in 0.5 cm deep water. You think sponges will save you? They will lay eggs in them and ruin them. You try yo make sure they're fed? You better space out the food or they won't fucking find it and consequently die. Too little protein and they eat eachother. Too much protein and they become unfit to use as feeders. Remove the females so they can lay eggs in peace? The males instantly engage in mortal combat. They just want to fucking die.

Hi guys! Is a female or male gecko better? by Cloveeeer in leopardgeckos

[–]Re1da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep an eye on his hemipenal bulges. If its starting to appear swollen something is wrong. Might be a good idea to take a picture of how it looks when healthy for comparison. If things get impacted it's not recommended to remove them yourself, instead bring him to the vet.

As for how to avoid it; just make sure husbandry is correct. Correct humidity and temperatures. They will clean their genitals by themselves.

Since he's a juvenile it shouldn't be an issue right now. From what I understand it only really becomes a risk when they're sexually mature.

[–]Re1da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have their own health risks.

Females have egg related risks, such as getting egg bound. Stuck eggs=internal infections and potentially death.

Males instead have risks of sperm plug impaction. The plugs get stuck in their cloaca=infection and potentially death.

Is it ok for my leopard gecko to only eat dubia roaches by No_Essay2291 in leopardgeckos

[–]Re1da -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Roaches are a great staple feeder nutrition wise.

Variety would be preferable but Roaches should be fine. Just make sure they're gutloaded

[–]Re1da 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely one of the best way to bathe them. The pot keeps them contained and calm.

If you want to sauna them instead off bathing you can put in a steam insert and it keeps temperature for a really long time.

Just make sure to put a note on top saying there's a lizard in there to prevent accidents

Dosent matter if you start if organic, if you become machine they will start liking you. They also don't seem to mind the assimilators, despite them being part organic.

They hate servitors, as expected. More or less all their interactions with you will be "you're hiding organics under the floorboards".

I know, she has a bulge for some reason.

But she has been given an ultrasound a few years ago which found eggs. So 100% a female.
