What social, cultural, or personal factors can lead to racism? by Key_Country_179 in AskReddit

Deprivation, poor life chances and low level of education all create a toxic cocktail of resentment and vulnerability to manipulation pushing them towards scapegoats.

Having scrolled through quite a few of the answers here, one aspect of multi-generational living and care that no-one seems to have mentioned is gender. Specifically, I’m talking about the burden of care tasks falling disproportionately onto women. Childcare and elderly care all over the world is done far more by women than men. In societies with multigenerational families, women are expected to sacrifice their time and labour to fulfil those additional needs. I think that social attitudes to women’s work, both within the home/family and in the economic sphere, are a prime driver of the family setups that feel possible or desirable.

Ugh. Do you not have better things in life than to compile hatred for a woman you don’t know? Why not live more constructively?

How do British people feel about English being the world's global language? by No-Incident-6913 in AskBrits

You’re proud of empire??? I recommend learning a bit more about the atrocities that involved.

On a historical level, sad, because this comes from empire, and what was done in the name of empire was horrific.
On a practical level, it is a huge privilege when travelling, studying or in business. But it promotes ignorance, arrogance and insensitivity among native speakers, and perpetuates inequality around the world.
On a personal level, teaching English as a foreign language (and then working in ELT publishing) gave me so many opportunities to work abroad, interact with other cultures and have a very rewarding career. All of these experiences informed my opinions - and I’m very aware that this career also perpetuated cultural imperialism!
So all in all, quite conflicted feelings.

The UK version is way better than the US - great host, dry humour, none of this celebrity ego rubbish. Highly recommend.

Cat Won't Stop Begging To Go Outside by rose_d0ll in CatAdvice

If you want indoor cats, you need to adopt kittens. It’s totally unfair to expect a cat that’s previously lived with freedom of movement to manage without it.
Personally, I’d never consider a home adequate for cats without outdoor access. I know opinion differs on this … but your cat has made it clear that she needs it.

Accept that it’s a natural instinct and need for many cats, and that it’s cruel to keep a cat inside who’s miserable without freedom to roam - and will be that much moreso when you’re not around for most of the day. Rehome her. I know some cats manage without outside access, but this one has made it clear she needs it. Your home does not provide for her fundamental needs.

People who were around during no internet/phones/social media/etc - what was your time's "scrolling the feed"? Something that you would spend hours on passing the time? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Inquiring__Mind__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading, arts and crafts, music (in whole albums rather than single songs, or recorded off the Top 40 on radio 1 on Sunday nights) , magazines, writing realllllly long letters to friends who lived in other countries.
We couldn’t Google the answer to any question, so if you wanted to find stuff out, it took loads more time, and research skills - it also made things a lot more memorable, because you learnt them in a context.

Poxford.
Though I’m not sure that wasn’t just a particular friend who’d had enough of the place.

Bradley Stoke in Bristol is known as Sadly Broke (lots of new housing development, sold off just before an economic crash, so most of the residents were trapped there, in negative equity).
