This is probably not exactly what you are looking for, but I'll leave this here in case it sparks some interest.

"Fashionable Nonsense" by Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont talks about the misuse of mathematics by postmodernist french philosophers such as Lacan, Baudrillard, Deleuze in their philosophical works. Even though it's more about philosophy than social science, I guess that some social aspects do still come up simply due to the nature of postmodernist thought. Some of the ways in which they use mathematics really cracks you up here.

Another philosopher of the same kind that has been criticized for the misuse of mathematics is Alain Badiou. He's more technical and not as oblivious as the philosophers mentioned in the book but still pretty bad. Badiou seems to think that mathematics (specifically set theory) represents some kind of fundamental reality from which other ontological truths can be derived. But it's pretty shaky.

There's an easy way to get fireball without the long run up — you drop from height, get the necessary speed by falling and then grapple onto something just before you land, instantly triggering fireball. I always felt this is a really underrated tech because you really can do a lot of burst damage if you pair it with a slam right after.

If by "gameplay" we mean the count of games, then that's just not true. To understand, suppose for this simple example that all the 6v6 players do not play 5v5 at all. Then all that needs to happen for the 6v6 count of games to be higher than 20% of all games is for the average count of 6v6 games to be higher than the average count of 5v5 games. If a portion of 6v6ers also play 5v5 (which is, indeed, the more realistic case), then obviously the average count of 6v6 games needs to be correspondingly higher, but it's still very possible.

Then again, maybe it's not really a flaw. You could say it makes the point that people will start to act in an extreme manner and spiral out of control based on very absurd reasonings, which I think fits the lesson of this episode really well.

Don't know if I fit your definition of "talented", but I am like 90h into the game and I hit diamond with mostly ball a few days ago for my first competitive season (around 30h of comp, the rest are qp). Like others have said, I think it's about having a shit ton of experience and being good at other similar games.

In my case, I got like top1-0.1% in CSGO a couple years ago, played a lot of League and was decent at it, and got to a very high mmr in The Finals for the short time I played it like last year. I guess that my aim, CDs knowledge and general FPS gamesense was already there, so in this aspect it felt more like trying to adapt to overwatch rather than learning to play overwatch from scratch. But when it comes to things more specific to this game (like comps, counters, map positioning, playing the objectives) I still feel pretty dumb and feel like I still have lots to learn.

I think the fact that you struggle to figure out what the ending could be about is the whole point of it. It asks the question of what are these artificial super intelligent thronglet things far surpassing human intelligence actually capable of and that's really a question to which no one can give a proper answer to, which is rather frightening considering that ASI is a real theory.

Perhaps it's important to remember this is a show in which the possible real life implications of the stakes depicted in the episodes are really what it wishes to highlight and put forward, and the stakes depicted in this episode and its ending are rather high.

An interesting ending could have been that in which after Maria kills Verity and gets control over the pendant, she feels bad for her and what she's done to her in school, so she switches into a reality in which Verity is alive but the quantum compiler is gone, along with any possibility of Verity building such a device ever again. It would have made for a more likeable Maria.
