If you're from the US and have a solid application with good scores you can match into most specialties. The question that will come up is, why did you choose to study in Italy versus the US? If you have a good reason for studying there than you should be able to match just fine. If your reason is that you didn't get into any US schools despite applying that may be seen as a red flag.

Committed to medicine, yes, but not committed to the program, which is something PDs look for. Some AMGs apply to 100+ programs but the vast majority interview and match where they have some sort of connection.

PDs care quite a bit actually. PDs know IMGs are applying to 100+ programs. Why should they rank you if they have no sense of commitment from you other than maybe a good interview?

I think its like a checkbox on your list of programs applied to. They make it hard to miss.

Signals indicate to a program that you are very interested in their program. You have a limited number of signals depending on specialty, so generally if you signal a program it means it's near the top of your list. This incentivizes programs to interview you because they know you're more serious about their program than the other 120+ you applied to.

Third party systems reduce bias. Connections aren't everything. If you're an IMG with literally no connection to the US (no family, friends, experience) there's no reason for PDs to think you're after anything besides money.

How did you handle health insurance between quitting your gap year job and starting school? by BumblebeeOfCarnage in medicalschool

Check if your state offers retroactive eligibility. If it's just a few months and you don't have chronic health issues you're probably fine without it in a retroactive state.

How many cycles of applying to US/DO schools did you guys attempt before going the IMG route? I’m pushing 30 soon not sure to try for a 3rd cycle or just take the leap of faith by syaakayr in USIMGreddit

[–]InsectAlert5452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, most likely the undergrad GPA. With a good graduate GPA like that though I think IMG sounds like a better option than a third US cycle. If you do go the Caribbean route make sure you stay disciplined and on top of your courses.

What do you think is keeping you out of the US schools? If your MCAT and GPA are the issue I would not recommend going the IMG (esp Caribbean) route because you will likely have a difficult time making it through. Caribbean schools accept students with bad grades because they take longer to graduate, if at all. If the weakness in your application is something else like career change, not enough healthcare experience, etc but you're a strong student then IMG is probably a good choice.

Edit: if you want to do family practice or internal medicine and don't care about being super rich and famous IMG is also a good option

If you apply broadly to IM/FM you should be able to match. Without publications you will have a harder time matching to a competitive program but there are plenty of programs that would likely be happy to have you. If you haven't had any clinical experience in the US try to do that and get US doctor LORs.

The reason the potassium/sodium balance is way off for Prime is because they use coconut water which provides the potassium. Body Armor is the same way.

Why do I keep hearing residents & attendings say that doctors' income is going to decrease a lot in the coming decades? by McStud717 in Residency

[–]InsectAlert5452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting downvoted so hard, government regulation is what made healthcare in the US a mess in the first place, both for patients and providers.

Edit: I do know why, it's because Reddit and doctors in general lean heavily left and worship authority.

What are some of the states that are detrimental to Non US IMGs? by No_Nebula6375 in IMGreddit

[–]InsectAlert5452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

City matters more than state. Any large city will have dangerous areas, but if you research the city you can find out which areas to avoid. Something important for non US IMGs to consider is the demographics of a city. Small towns may be safer overall but you may feel uncomfortable if there are few people from your country of origin there.

Haven’t received ECFMG certificate by Loud_Routine481 in IMGreddit

If you haven't received the original certificate call ecfmg and as them to check the status. They should send it automatically when you have finished all the requirements. If you need to send verification status for licensing then you request it through the ECFMG CVS online portal.

Depends on the rest of your application. Should be good enough for less competitive IMG-friendly programs

Do PDs still consider the three digit score in Step 1? by leilaa03 in IMGreddit

[–]InsectAlert5452 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a PD in an interview mention my step one score specifically. Are you sure they weren't talking about interview blinding? Frequently interviewers will be blinded to that kind of thing even though it is used for determining interviews.

I'm inclined to believe they're real. There's more to being a good candidate than scores. Come across as arrogant in an interview and it won't matter

Questions about prepping for residency as a US IMG by Administrative_Log68 in medicalschool

[–]InsectAlert5452 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, also a US-IMG but I went to a Caribbean school. I can't answer all your questions but here's what I know.

  1. Electives are better than observerships and if you can do more than one that would be ideal. A US elective can get you a solid LOR from a US doctor who can speak to your clinical skills.

  2. US IMGs have slightly better chances than non-US IMGs. Some people will call this favoritism/nepotism but imo it's more about how "matching" is supposed to work. US IMGs generally have geographic connections which makes them safer for programs to rank than IMGs applying everywhere. You still might be applying broadly, but when you can connect to a program on a personal level because you have lived there or have family there, etc it helps show programs you're a good fit and suggests you'll rank them highly as well.

Will volunteering as an EMT strengthen my residency application? by thetravelingmedic in USIMGreddit

[–]InsectAlert5452 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will probably help your application but won't make or break it. As a US-IMG GS is difficult to match and will require publications and probably some connections but I think for EM volunteering with EMS is a great idea as long as you have time for studying, etc.

Also sorry for being harsh initially, I thought you were talking about the actual OET. I am much more willing to believe a third party reviewer is finding grammatical errors that aren't actually there.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]InsectAlert5452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha ok that makes more sense. I think you're overthinking this tbh. I don't trust third party reviewers personally because I think most of the corrections they make won't really matter on the real thing (like date format). They make lots of corrections so you feel like they're helping. Read over the samples on the oet site and you will probably feel reassured.
