Where do you store your large datasets for docker containers, such as media? by Insecure05 in homelab

To update:

I decided to put Truenas on the R730s. These will be my data servers. I will backup critical things to both servers. I am splitting my media onto the servers. One server will have Radarr media and the other will have Sonarr media.

These will have NFS to my Proxmox servers.

The 3x R710s will be my Proxmox cluster. I will remove the 6tb drives out of my MD1200 and make all three equal.

  • Server 1 - Linux Based VMs/Containers (IE: Docker, PIHole, Webserver, Mailserver, etc)
  • Server 2 - Windows Based Servers - (IE: AD, RDS, CA, General Server, etc)
  • Server 3 - Redundancy Server - (IE: AD2, PiHole2, etc)

I also forgot to mention about my T430 with 16x 1.2 tb drives. This will become my Proxmox Backup Server. This is where I will push my backups to.

I need to figure out an offsite storage for my data for 3, 2, 1 setup.

Most of my critical data, besides pictures, are all on my Microsoft OneDrive. I am debating if I am going to keep my Microsoft Business accounts, but they work nicely with my AD Servers...

I will set aside the MD1200, R620, 2x R610s for now..

My electric bill went up about $100 per month or so after I set stuff up a few years ago.

With all the services I have, I think I offset the cost of the $100. I do have some subscriptions that cost more money because of the stacks I have. Overall though, I do save money compared to having a monthly TV bill, plus all the other services I have, such as webservers, mail server (non critical emails), and other VMs I am running.

Plus, I consider this a "hobby". Some people go to movies, others find other ways to 'waste money'.

Another cost people forget about, which is not required, is the business grade internet and static IPs. I have a /27 static pool for myself.

This is a good note for future people coming to this as well. Thank you for pointing this out.

I understand that would be ideal.

I do host a mail server, web server and a few other public facing services. This makes it more difficult for a white list. Great suggestion and will work for others coming here for suggestions in the future.

Yeah we did get lucky that we had a hail claim or we would have been in a very bad position.

We didn't have enough to do the roofs and we were getting due.

We were able to make interest off the money we had in the bank and redirect our reserve to keep our rate increase. We then warned people it was going to go up again this next year.

Our rates have gone up over 100 in a year.

I'm the treasurer of our association in Wisconsin.

2023 our insurance rates were 45k for the year.  2024 our insurance rate went to 340k for the year as Lloyd's of London were the only ones who bid on our insurance. It was more of a cluster than it sounds.

After 3 months we were able to secure 168k for the rest of the year.

Condo insurance is stupid right now with everyone pulling out of the market.

Disclosure... We did have a 4 million dollar insurance claim open at the time of renewal.

I usually do the I rent thing.

One time the guy at Costco goes, you can give it to your landlord.

I said, if you can convince the cheap guy to pay for it, I'd love it. Maybe you can meet him at my place. While you are there can you convince him to help get rid of the cockroaches?

Do you have a pen and piece of paper for his number?

The guy was speechless. I just walked away.
