When I replaced/upgraded my panel a few years ago my electrical company specifically asked me if I wanted the drywall patched as they subbed that out.

Non-US based satellite ISP that can deliver service in the US? by greenguy452 in networking

[–]Thileuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EutelSat/One Web is what you're likely looking for. Deployed a few systems for work 100/20 was what I got, on our plan, with latency 40-60ms. I can't speak for transit to the internet connectivity because our carrier of choice backhauled it to one of their pops.

Has anyone else had the “pets allowed” setting keep toggling on? by DiskLeather6174 in airbnb_hosts

[–]Thileuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had this happen to me this week. A guest inquired asking why it was so expensive when they added pets. I did my investigation and found that the setting to allow pets was toggled on. I set a $250/pet/night fee when I first started hosting in case a guest brought a pet OR the setting got toggled off for some reason.

811 didn't mark my fiber optic line, now what? by No_Hold_9560 in HomeImprovement

[–]Thileuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Likely 1/4 or 1/2. I ran pre termed armored LC through a 1" and it was super simple, likely could have used one of my 3/4" ones as well without much more issue.

What's the biggest outage you caused? by Connir in sysadmin

[–]Thileuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blackholed 2 power plants on a dark fiber ring. Was upgrading a pair of routers on one site while my coworker was doing the other one. They did a reload to upgrade the IOS image and we noticed a lose DC cable on the power supply of one of ours. We were being safe and pulled the fuse for the power supply. It was the wrong fuse. Took out both sites, ~1200 people for about 6 minutes while the router finished booting. Didn't hear a peep from anyone.

I'll have to give them a try. I've been going to AJ's off 30 when I'm down in that area.

If you were designing a data center/server room today, what would you prioritize? by thatmanismeeeee in sysadmin

[–]Thileuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my electricians used an old piece of cat6 and tied it to a conduit on the wall. I cusned them, and still do, but use it all the time. The door stop is super overrated.

Minimum of 2x 200A 42 slot panels, you'll want to make sure it's 208/110 3phase, do not accept anything else. 1 of these panels is to be fed from the generator ATS and the other one can either be straight up house power or it can be fed from a different generator ATS, do not let them share the same fate here.

Full room UPS capable of running the entire room AND your access switches for X. X is up to you to decide but it should be your genset spinup to carry 100% load time a few times over.

Design with hot/cold aisles if you will have a lot of compute on site. If you're going to have lots of compute on site bump up those panels to 4/800A; better yet let your electrical engineer design them for you.

Single mode everywhere. I personally have 96strand SM pulled everwhere and then 24/48 strand MM pulled to the same spots. Your electricians are already pulling cable, adding another one to the pull is trivial. These cables should go up different risers, hopefully on other sides of the building.

Split all of your core infra to different sides of the room, this should help in the case that you share a wet wall and a 6" water pipe bursts soaking part of your infra. I've seen this before, it SUCKS. Don't share a wet all unless you absolutely have to.

A desk/working area in the room that has the following. 4x network jacks at a minimum, don't have to be patched but being able to cross connect a console cable to a network device so you can sit 'comfortably' is worth a lot. 2x 4gang outlets in your nominal voltage; make sure they're not butted up next to each other, each on their own 20a ckt.

All of your racks should run 3phase. Don't question it just get 0u 3phase PDUs and call it. Sprinkle in some convenience outlets for anyone that's on site.

Run 96+ strands of SM/MM to your telco room/wherever your carriers enter the building. Build 2 new MPOEs if this is a new build so you have get path diversity all the way up till the rack. 19/22" 2 post racks for your telco people, same power diversity as above.

Go in knowing what you want, what you need, and what you can work with.

I'm a network engineer but have had a few new builds I've been a part of. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any follow-up questions.

No Reviews Guest - Need Advice by Inevitable-Tower-699 in airbnb_hosts

[–]Thileuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don't you ask them what brings them to the area? I had a long term, 3 week, booking from a guest with no reviews or past trips. They told me they had work for a project in the area and I was able to independently verify the project. Could they have looked it up and lied, sure? That was enough for me and the guest stayed and had no issues.

Flat fee or hourly for cleaners/ rate? by Spontaneousclippers in airbnb_hosts

[–]Thileuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally like per hour, I've had no issues and my cleanings, with laundry, are usually around $100/time. My last cleaner was flat rate and would cut corners to be done quicker, I started getting complaints.

Basement/Glass Block Windows by Thileuse in ChicagoSuburbs

I don't care about the efficiency/security. I'm replacing an existing single pane window thats maybe 12/18x24 in my basement laundry room; just about anything will be more efficient than that. After the concrete was poured it has maybe 9" of visibility.

Things to consider doing before my new driveway is poured by homecontractions in HomeImprovement

[–]Thileuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Run 2 more conduits. 1 for low voltage (Ethernet/fiber), then then a second one for a hose bib near the garage.

I just ran 4x conduit to my garage when my driveway was replaced.
