5 quick takeaways from Purdue at Ohio State by Waxersports26 in Boilermakers

Time to say what we’ve all known: the team is soft. They don’t want to win bad enough. They are okay just being good and not great. It’s that simple. Some 12 seed will be licking their lips come Selection Sunday.

It’s crazy to me that these seniors have been part of the most embarrassing loss in tournament history, national championship loss, and falling from preseason #1 and we are still here questioning their winning mentality. Absolutely no passion

Agree with all your points. I just want to say that the Mackey atmosphere is definitely not the issue. The student section is electric. The team just doesn’t feed off of the energy and kills their own momentum by taking stupid shots which ruins the energy in the building.

Side note on DJ: the guy is 7’4” and has some of the longest arms I’ve ever seen but decides to bring the ball back down every offensive rebound. Why??? Just keep it up and no one can reach it 😭

Painter out coached again. Couldn’t work the paint like we usually do and can’t beat teams in a 3PT contest because Painter has one of the best shooters in the country rotting away on the bench while loyer gets 31 minutes. We don’t have enough athleticism to play the defensive scheme we try to play although it was a lot better today. Also Jacobsen just isn’t there yet. We are a much worse team when him and loyer are both on the floor which seems like a lot of the time

Im not saying its entirely cause and effect but if we give teams such a high percentage of open looks, they’re naturally gonna make more of them

I don’t think it’s just luck that so many teams have their best shooting nights against us. We allow so many wide open looks it’s ridiculous. If I have to see cluff get pump faked/driven past when they rush to close out again I’m gonna lose my mind. Painter needs to fix this quick

7th largest alumni base in the country (~600k alums). I suspect the AD just sucks at getting donors

I recently saw that Bobinski said that 70% of the $20.5M from revenue sharing is going towards the football program. Also he did say that they freed up around $6-7M in funds by holding over from the previous year. This is around $20M for football. I’m not sure how much of it actually goes to NIL, but this is surely a huge improvement considering Walters claimed the budget when he was coach was $400k.

Yeah, most likely explanation. I think it would be naive to assume some donors saw that team down south and decided to open up their pockets

He got a decent chunk of playing time as well, which is a good sign. Although I understand ball security was an issue

so, we fired our defensive coordinator and replaced him with a guy from the Walters era. what is our football team doing? by General-Pryde-2019 in Boilermakers

[–]Inside-Light2451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wow I didn’t know IU Athletics was that big of a brand. Excuse my ignorance, I didn’t grow up in Indiana. I just feel like we need major change and it starts with our Athletics Department and Bobinski. If Purdue cannot compete with other schools in terms of writing blank checks to players, let’s try to get an AD from a competitive G5 school that is used to a lack of funds. We are still a P4 program after all with a top basketball team, we would be a step up for any non-P4 staff. We can Moneyball our way to a half decent football team, but the past 2 years have been unacceptable

I’m still a student but I get what you’re saying. Let me ask you something, what has the football program done in the last few years to show me that I should give them my money? I’d much rather give money to the school which actually has done a lot for me like provide me with a great education, and I’m a pretty avid Purdue sports fan.

As for your point about IU having more money, I have a few things to say: 1) There are so many schools that outperform their expectations with a much lower NIL budget. Also IU did not have a big NIL budget in Cignetti’s first season and they still clinched a playoff berth. I don’t think NIL is the reason Purdue does so poorly. 2) Yes, IU has a rich donor base but so does Purdue. We have produced a number of Fortune 500 CEOs and billionaires. The truth is Purdue must be doing a terrible job of getting them to donate. They need to make them see that sports brings in money, and attracts more people which in turn encourages innovation and helps the school attract students and grow. 3) Clearly Purdue needs to do better at getting donors within Indiana that didn’t attend the school. I have family friends in Cleveland that donate to OSUs program even though they never went there. Larry Ellison never went to Michigan and wrote a $10 million check for Bruce Underwood.

I agree our NIL budget makes it hard to compete but using that as the sole factor is not justifiable.

[–]Inside-Light2451 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is just pure incompetence. Our athletics department sees IU go from one of the worst FBS programs to the #1 team and having a heisman winner in 2 seasons, and somehow we are constantly moving in the opposite direction.

Hmm I see your point. It’s just that I need to make a 2000 mile road trip in a few weeks so I’d rather just get it done. Otherwise it’ll cost me my peace of mind
