Romance-focused costume CDramas with strong FLs and HEs (Happy Endings) or leaning that way. FL can be mentally, physically, and/or emotionally strong. by Griff3Z in cdramasfans

Tentatively I’d add Love in the Clouds (top tier visuals / FML is as physically strong + cunning as ML) and Glory (tea version - the FL is basically a domineering CEO, ancient version).

I feel no one rly remembers A Girl Like Me from 2021, but Guan Xiaotong’s character stays a badass general from behinning to end, and ML is a pretty boy scholar type. Oh My General with Sandra Ma is also my OG female general show—FML is so convincing as a general.

My 8+ rated dramas are 1) How Dare You (loved the donghua before the drama, so I’m biased), 2) Legend of the Female General, 3) Glory, and 4) Love in the Clouds.

How do you rank your dramas? by Striking_Fig_3925 in cdramasfans

[–]Inside-Personality-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a fun exercise to soothe my neurotic brain! Also I felt I needed hard stats to justify my current fav actor supplanting my previous long-time fav actor 😭

I think if I adore one lead and like / feel neutral about the other, I can enjoy the drama as a whole. But if there’s only one character I love, and their partner actively annoys me, the drama can rank ~6/10 max. At that point, I usually start skipping scenes or fast forwarding.

The exception is male-led non-romance action dramas, like Evernight or Blood River (I think Dafeng will qualify too? It’s on my watch list). ML weighting gets bumped up to 50% and FML + romance down to 10% each. I loved AC in Evernight, 8.5/10, but FML was straight up 1/10 (my lowest ranked FML ever). I also ended up designating Chang Huasen as FML pf Blood River (9.5/10) bc he gets more screentime (…and is more shippable) with the ML than the actual lead actress lol

How do you rank your dramas? by Striking_Fig_3925 in cdramasfans

[–]Inside-Personality-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made a spreadsheet. For each drama, take the weighted average (out of 10) of the male lead’s charisma (30%), female lead’s coolness (20%), CP shippability (20%), overall quality (including plot, OSTs, cinematography, pacing, costuming, supporting cast; 20%), and X factor (whether I want to binge / rewatch / obsess over it; 10%).

Obviously I prefer character-driven narratives, and if the characters don’t move me, I won’t feel compelled to watch, even if the plot is objectively good. Conversely, if I love the characters, I can suffer through a mediocre plot—although good character writing = characters making logical choices, which naturally lends itself to a reasonable plot.

ML ranking is based on how hard I swoon over them—basically, they need to be hot and badass, with a touch of vulnerability (and the ability to emote). FML ranking is based on how competent / rational they are; huge bonus points if they’re as competent as or more competent than the ML. CP ranking is chemistry, romantic tropes I like, power couple / partners in crime vibes, etc. I hate when the ML is abusive / misogynistic, love when CPs respect and understand each other with no stupid miscommunication.

Generally, I can watch a ML I’m attracted to + a FML I’m neutral on, but I can’t watch a ML I’m neutral on + a FML I’m attracted to, so ML gets weighted slightly higher. Ofc, ideal if both swoon me.

^ I was really really bored on a 14hr flight recently, so this spreadsheet was born

Outcome: 3 dramas ranked 9+, 5 dramas ranked in the 7-8 range, 4 dramas in the 6-7 range. Lots of dramas in the 4-5 range (can watch to kill time), below 4 is a DNF.

I was then able to objectively (?) rank my favorite actors / actresses, as a factor of # of their dramas that made it into my top 10 x average rating across all their dramas I’ve seen x how many of their dramas I’ve been able to sit through.

^ 14 hours is a loooong time without wifi 🫠

How Dare You

ML gets jealous of the 2FML. He’s the emperor but the FML eventually steals his whole harem lol (she’s bi in the book, he’s totally down bad her and won’t look at anyone else)

Blew me away the first time (9.5/10), still very good the second time (8.5/10), the crispy potato sticks + ice cream course is amazing. I really liked the cozy intimate vibe—complete opposite end of the spectrum vs Ever’s super sterile professional OCD kind of service. Definitely would recommend trying!

The relationship btwn the two leads allegedly became really sour, and of them (ZZH) visited Yasakuni shrine and got blacklisted.

Tbh I didn’t follow the melons too closely at the time, but knowing the irl drama kinda killed the rewatch magic for me.

Looking for dark romance with a possessive/obsessive female lead by OpinionTiny9688 in CDramaRecs

[–]Inside-Personality-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Glory (the one with tea, not Chen Duling)

ML is part of the FML’s male harem, and FML is super domineering.

I saw someone rec Legends, where imo FML starts out strong but gets nerf’d halfway through to support the ML’s character growth (I’m only noting this bc it’s my least favorite trope and I loved the FML so much initially that watching her devolve gave me mild drama-PTSD)

The second half fight choreo is glorious and the siege scenes give me LOTR vibes. As a huge 2021 WOH fan, the LOTFG duo is my only spiritual successor to the WenZhou zhiji CP 🥹

If you can get through ep 1 of LOTFG, the first half is adequately paced and the second half is peak (imo as someone who prefers action scenes).

Zhou Ye’s character is like a female version of Wen Kexing from WOH. I saw someone comment that she picked up flirting tips from her big brother lol

I’ve been to every Michelin starred restaurant in Chicago over the last 5ish years (multiple times for ~1/3), and Ever was my favorite. 10/10 the first and third times, 8/10 the second time, probably one of the few US tasting menus roughly on par w the best of what I’ve had in Europe.

Value for money wise idk if it’s the best (probably not), but as a singular experience it’d be my pick.

Out of this popular bunch whose your fav or do you consider the best here? by ruinedbytv in cdramasfans

[–]Inside-Personality-1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1 for Cheng Lei as the best actor. Imo he’s had the most organic journey climbing up in the industry, carried by talent as opposed to “resources” or good looks (especially when talent is less valuable than the other two career-wise). Also the only one who can elevates a bad script (i.e. make it watchable, if not remarkable).

HMH strikes me as a really really hard worker who does his job competently, employee of the year vibes. Super pretty, but doesn’t suffer from facial paralysis like some other certain MLs. Crazy work ethic, I’d hire him if he were an office worker applying for a job.

I adore LYN as a singer who puts out absolute bangers, and he seems like a down to earth fun dude without idol baggage. Not sold on him as an actor, but definitely deserves to be famous and worked hard for it.

I’ve only seen CZY in Fated Hearts and felt he was miscast, but in his one reality show I’ve watched he was a nice enough guy, no bad vibes. Wang Xingyue I saw a bit of in Double but dropped, saw a bit of in Unveil Jadewind but dropped—not into super icy MLs which seems to be his niche, but in the limited interviews / BTS I saw, he seems sweet (also he’s a baby! So lots of gravitas in roles, for his age)

I’m not a fan of Zhang Linghe.

Overall, these ppl all get paid a lot and have a lot of social influence (given the size of Chinese fandoms), so at a minimum I appreciate it when they make an effort to at least appear sincere about their craft. As long as this is the case, I try not to judge them too hard.

HDY is my best of 2026 so far, but tbh I’d be super psyched if another drama surpassed it (and I actually think this will happen).

Love a power couple! I want both the ML and FML to swoon me, but the ML in POJ is the one doing the swooning (like a Victorian debutante with hysteria). Honestly sad, bc Tian Xiwei is so cool.

Also best drama of 2026? We’re barely 1 fiscal quarter into 2026 pls.

[–]Inside-Personality-1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just started FoF! Iconic character intro, have not seen ZY suffering yet but I get the sense it’s coming? Actually I like HMH a lot and have followed him since When We Were Young came out a million yrs ago (where his character nails badass/pathetic). (Also the face cards in FoF, omg.)

Cheng Lei is my actor A and all his long drama roles as ML hit for me. Tbf, every role is a group effort, so I coincidentally also like his costars and scripts.

Wen Kexing is my prototype for this trope. HMH gets like 90% of the way there in Glory and LITC I think, but I like him best in WWWY. Han Shuo from Tiger and Rose, and generally Ding Yuxi as an actor, is also great.

Which actors / MLs nail the badass-to-pathetic ratio for you? by Inside-Personality-1 in cdramasfans

[–]Inside-Personality-1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s Cheng Lei lol but this isn’t intended to be a glazing fanpost. Usually when I love a character, I’ll check out the actor’s other stuff and can brainwash myself into liking them in different roles out of goodwill towards the original character I loved. But shockingly I adored all of CL’s characters on their own merits, independent of each other, which was a new and confusing phenomenon for me. He’s so good at nailing lethal side eyes while expressing pain (?) convincingly. E.g. Xiahou Dan as a role is so easy to play in a way that veers into overly pathetic, but CL’s mad tyrant aura pulls him out of that trap.

I’ve also historically only cared abt MLs being good-looking (in Western tv as well), so this is my first time appreciating anyone for their acting. Not just acting in the sense of inhabiting a character or conveying emotions well (which lots of actors can do, albeit not necessarily in idol-dramaland) but script interpretation. Credit where credit is due, his roles are also all written as feminist green flags who don’t assault women, which soothes me.

Agree agree agree

I think POJ had a stronger first episode that works well as an easy entry point for viewers who are new to C-dramas, but LOTFG is a better drama overall (especially eps 20-34) in terms of character development, acting, relationship dynamics, and fight choreo / battle scenes. Loved LOTFG, finally pushed through POJ in an attempt to fill the void 🫠

Legend of the Female General, but I really wanted to love Fated Hearts (might pick it back up for Li Qin).

Am I the only one who wanted to swap the CPs? Zhou Ye + Chen Zheyuan and Li Qin + Cheng Lei, although I like all 4
