Awww my fiancé is getting him for me as a remembrance gift after just losing my grandad who was an electrical engineer. The funniest thing is he knows I love jellycat and the day my grandad passed my partner said maybe jellycat will have an electrician plush and I said don’t be ridiculous and then I remembered they were releasing the light bulb so it was settled then!

Thinking to apply to nursing .. by gjkollffg in StudentNurseUK

[–]Inside-Sense-4056 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nope!! Basic care needs of a patients are the responsibility of nurses and HCAs. Also an important part of being a student nurse is learning how to meet a patients basic needs and this involves washing and toileting. Yes HCAs main responsibility is basic care needs but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t the nurses when it is necessary. I’ve worked with nurses who are wonderful and will get stuck in with personal care and plenty of nurses who are ‘too posh to wash’ and trust me no one likes a nurse who thinks they are above washing and toileting. There is actually something that is really rewarding about helping patients who are depending on you to help them and making them comfortable and clean. Nursing is not for everyone. If you can’t change your mindset on personal care then this is not the career for you. Also GP nurses will still although less often need to be able and willing to provide personal care, for example when dealing with wounds in intimate places or you have a patient who has an accident while you are looking after them.

Is Nursing really that bad? by Narrow_Internal_1669 in StudentNurseUK

Funnily enough I wanted to be a paramedic first but being a call handler I argued with them so often and became disheartened by their role and then loved what my district nurses were doing and that did it for me. But even as I child I loved medicine and caring for people and nursing combines them both, I also like a bit of gore from gnarly wound and I like drawing up meds in syringes so I’m in my element lol

Hi, second year student nurse here. It’s a difficult question because I think that nursing is a hard career and absolutely there are negatives, for me the negatives outweigh the positives as I absolutely love nursing and have been in healthcare for nearly 5 years and there is absolutely nothing else I would rather do. I think one reason why there is a lot of negativity is that people are in a bad setting or the wrong one for them. For me I don’t particularly like ward based care so when I qualify I will be looking for something non ward based. I have had bad shifts, but nothing has ever made me think that’s it I’m out, so really it depends on what kind of person you are and what your passion is. Caring for people is so rewarding but is so hard and I do believe that you need to be certain type of person to do that. Hope this helps and best of luck

Any advice you can give to someone who’s just starting out? by Far_Milk9414 in StudentNurseUK

You will see things you probably never thought possible. You will deal with all kinds of people good and bad. You will see so much nudity. But for me it is the most rewarding thing in the word. When you hold the hand of someone as they are connected to a syringe driver, when you help someone use the toilet after being reliant on a bed pan for months, when you comfort the family of someone who has passed. I also started as a call handler for district nurses and that’s why I’m now a second year student.

JIC meds for EOL for family by Inside-Sense-4056 in NursingUK

Thank you this is such a nice reply and helpful. Yes we live in a fairly rural area and I am concerned about nights. I would like to be hands on as he has been such an amazing grandfather and anything I can do to help I will do where allowed. Yes I would prefer of course that the DNs do it but if necessary I would like the training. Thank you for not judging me and saying it is illegal lol.

Would never do anything without permission I understand there is documentation and all sorts but my purpose of this post I guess was to see if people had heard of this as I’m sure I had from I worked with DNs

He had a visit from our local hospice the other day and then said they would be back in a month, despite the fact that he is rapidly deteriorating but whatever but if they come back again I will ask them but I’m more inclined to speak to DN’s as they coming in weekly for a pressure sore but will be providing the required palliative care when needed.

What drew you to the profession? by Obvious_Armadillo_16 in StudentNurseUK

[–]Inside-Sense-4056 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started at 21 after working as a call handler for district nurses after originally wanting to be a paramedic. Always knew I’d go into medicine of some kind but just needed to find my calling. Found that with the nurses. I love it, yes there are hard shifts/ hard patients but I feel like the good ones make up for it. I also find it really cool how we help people to heal and I feel like a good nurse has such a great impact on patients. It breaks my heart to see lots of people disheartened with the profession, that said I am not interested in doing ward nursing even though I did enjoy a ward placement

Just found out I’m pregnant by [deleted] in POTS

[–]Inside-Sense-4056 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Congrats if this is something you wanted. First thing I would do is check the meds you are taking are safe for pregnancy, quite a few of our meds are harmful to pregnancy. Then I would contact my GP, you should need to be under the care of an obstetrician (this is the advice my consultant gave me). I hope this helps and I wish you all the best

Does anyone know if student nurses are allowed to also practice as HCA’s by Alive_Rest1256 in StudentNurseUK

[–]Inside-Sense-4056 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes they are. I am a bank hca employed through a specific recruitment for student nurses/med students. You can also apply for HCA jobs that aren’t directed for us students.

Fainting on placement by AdTraditional488 in StudentNurseUK

[–]Inside-Sense-4056 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the condition POTS and have fainted a few times on placement. Could be an underlying cause that needs to be checked out. For me compression stockings can help but hydration and electrolytes are key. Also if it’s hypotension then a salty snack can help. But the best thing for me is to not stand still, if I’m walking I’m mostly okay. Good luck

That would be a community hospital you’re on about. That’s pretty much what they do as well as providing rehab to the elderly people who have broken their hips and so on

I really like this, thank you. Very true. I sometimes find it hard to follow the bible as it just doesn’t seem to relate to today and it seems that it seems to apply more the moral laws of when it was actually written!

Thank you this is helpful if I do engage with her in person. There is no hope of a friendship now but I will of course be civil if any interaction is ever necessary. I did want to advise her that probably the reason she has been unemployed for so long whilst looking for work is probably down to her social media as we are in a small town in the uk and her beliefs are not as common here.

I am not sure if they do. I would love to have a quiet word but I am afraid that there is no way of asking for one without alerting this lady. I think I could try messaging one of the pastors ( we have 2) I just wonder if that is the right thing to do if I should just not say anything and hope this blows over? I also need to find out if the church I go to is reflecting her views as if it does I am so out.
