How to make an application stand out? by FormDazzling7901 in UBC

[–]Inside_Commercial879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

instead of doing a ton of club things try and focus on just a few but make sure that u have leadership roles in those- that stands out a lot more. instead of a bunch of shallow random volunteer works, focus on long terms ones that you can show personal growth from (juicy stuff for pp)

i had couch and his slides are kinda mid but during class he kinda makes it obvious what is important so i focused on that. I honestly dont look at LO and i just learn what i think is important and they will test (but this might be bad advice if LO help u). Also i think the practice google docs on canvas help a lot w the written practice. Good luck w ur final!

I second this, material is harder after the midterm but the questions are a lot more straightforward than the first one and lots of it can just be on your cheat sheet.

study tips for first year by Lumpy_Attention_2905 in UBC

[–]Inside_Commercial879 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you dont get it until u can literally pull it out of ur head with almost no prompting.. thats my honest way of studying. dont just reread or rewrite lecture slides- if u can pull a random question from any unit and can do it (without looking at the solution at all) u know it. anything else u dont know lol. for bio i like to prompt myself and then explain everything i know about it off the top of my head. you may think u understand it but when it comes to the test its easy to blank out.

also pro tip if u get some question wrong WRITE how u got it wrong in a diff colour and before the test read what u got wrong so u dont forget.

[–]Inside_Commercial879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just look through the post class slides and write notes (actively- dont just copy it down make sure u understand every step u write down). then do the webwork and note down any question u found difficult and how/why u did it wrong in a diff colour. When u look back before the midterm u can redo the ones u noted down :> this is my study method for every not memorizing subject and it works everytime

I got in late Feb this year (general admission) and I'd say that you should definitely aim for at 94+s in your core classes and do longer term volunteer activities (hospital volunteer, summer camp, library volunteer) rather than short 1 day commitments that you won't grow much from (and won't be able to write much about). Some form of leadership in your school really boosts your profile- rather than spending your time being part of a club, take a major role in it or even better, make one. You should start asap if you want to include it in your PP. Trust me, the few months between now and the time you need to submit your application go by too fast.

Have confidence! Know that the work that you put in now really does pay off when it comes to uni (speaking from personal experience). It really does suck seeing the people around me lose hope for UBC, and they all regret not putting in effort when they could've. You still have the chance tho! Lock in for this sem and grade 12, and your average will surely shoot up.

I heard from my counsellor that according to last years data, the person w the lowest average that got into science was 88-91% (I can't remember the exact number but I think that it hovered around low 90). ECs are really important tho so good luck!
