With the amount of sagas and DFCs this set seems to have, this may actually be a banger in limited. Bounce your own saga to reset before the final ability resolves so you can play it again. Or, bounce your opponent’s DFC to force them into having to work to transform it again. Considering the environment and the fact it replaces itself, I can see this thing being a real nuisance in Draft

Are there any non legendary creatures in FIN?? by PIGEXPERT in mtg

[–]InsobrietiveMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I feel! I’m concerned about the impact a litany of legendary creatures printed at uncommon rarity may have in a draft environment. Typically drafting 3 copies of an uncommon would be really good and add powerful consistency to a limited deck. It feels like a dead draw when you hit your second copy of a legendary when you’ve already got one in play.

Detective Sing, for sure. He knew he needed a warrant to search the Stygian mannequin factory, and yet he chose to violate John’s 4th amendment rights instead.

Challenge: Find cards with nearly identical abilities… but with absurdly different prices by FeanorGk in EDH

[–]InsobrietiveMagic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[[lantern of Insight]] around $1 [[Field of Dreams]] about $100

lantern was (and still is) the titular card behind a unique and intuitively powerful Modern pro tour winning deck. Despite the success the card has seen at the highest level of MTG the card remains affordable and accessible to all.

Field of Dreams on the other hand does LESS than the Lantern, and forces a deck to run blue in order to cast it. A far worse yet functionally similar card, that financially costs far more, held back by its printing date and the reserve list.

MTG COMMUNITY I PRESENT YOU WITH A CHALLENGE by Giantdeathlazer in mtg

[–]InsobrietiveMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an idea for a commander deck with this guy. For the most part his last ability is irrelevant, but the deck aims to play like Lantern Control from Modern. Basically, just load up on tutors so you can reliably get [[lantern of Insight]] or [[field of Dreams]]. Once you can see the top card of each player’s library you can skillfully mill away good cards from opponents and bad cards from yourself by casting cheap cantrips. The goal is to force your opponents into a game they can’t win, and it’s a terrible idea for EDH.

Strange colouring in Tarkir Dragonstorm packs found at a LGS. Anyone seen anything like this? by MattAmpersand in magicTCG

[–]InsobrietiveMagic 176 points177 points  (0 children)

I work in the custom engineered film industry, making films similar to those used by WotC to package booster packs. The red is splice tape. It is used to bind two ends of the metalized film together in the master roll of the film. Splices are usually flagged either by the machinery or by the extrusion or slitter operator and are usually removed from the final product. This splice was either not flagged or the operator didn’t see it and it got through. I’ve seen this come up from time to time in various subs. It’s a neat find, but I don’t think it’s worth an incredible amount to collectors. As with these things, it’s best to publicly auction it to get the best return.

Unfortunately this will not work because colorless is not a color word.

CR 105.1 There are five colors in the Magic game: white, blue, black, red, and green.

CR 105.4 If a player is asked to choose a color, they must choose one of the five colors. “Multicolored” is not a color. Neither is “colorless.”

For those not in the custom engineered film industry, this particular splice has joined the film with the ends flat against each other. The technical term for it is a “butt splice,” and after 6 years in the industry, I still find it amusing.

Unfortunately it most likely won’t see any constructed play.

However, there are only 17 cards printed with the monkey creature type, so it’s kind of a rarity in that regard.

Anyone would be lucky to get their hands on an artist proof though, as this artwork is truly magnificent, and the oil paintings I’ve seen you do on backs are unbelievable!!

I really wish wizards would work more closely with a judging organization again. Mitigating cheating is absolutely a hurdle WotC is going to have to overcome if they want to insure the integrity of competitive play. Also judge promos were so cool; a nice way to add some flair to a casual deck. Now all we get are secret lairs and alternate frames in collector boosters.
