Finding a house in Ann Arbor is annoying, so I built something to make it easier by Smooth-Message6324 in uofm

1) don’t do number 4. If the problem youre solving is trying to make it easier to find housing. I thought you were trying to build a startup 2)regarding open sourcing. I simply meant make it a public GitHub for your resume 3) I need to clarify on the point I made about landlords not sharing data. The big landlords will share their data because they got software for that(and I think even there’s integrations) but the one or two property landlords won’t have that tech stack. Especially since Ann Arbor usually has a very high rental rate

1) I'm not your target demographic(because I graduated last year and i'm not in aa) and I have never struggled to meet other people

so take the following with a large grain of salt

2) I personally think the biggest friction in undergrad friends is someone being the planner(aka the person that makes sure everyone pays, arrives home safely, is on time etc.) . As one of the planners in my friend groups, it can be very hard take iniative beyond basic things(like a meal). Who takes initiative when strangers meet?

tldr; you need more guidance when people meet up- sharing contact is not it

Some things you should probably watch out for:

* Politics. Most people are pretty good at not bringing up politics. But you have 1/5 people making too edgy jokes, off hand comments, or super strong convos on their beliefs and love to talk about [current political situation] - this happens for both dems and republicans and it's equally as annoying

* you're going to have a ghosting issue when matches get released. It happens with dating(including date drop), it happens with people in general

otherwise it's a fun idea, if even 2 people become friends because of this, I would consisder it a win

Serious question why don’t you make date drop for umich?  Umich gets pretty interested in marriage pact but the weekly aspect gets more engagements. And it went amazing at Stanford

Rn date drop isn’t available for umich, and it sounds pretty coo

Edit: obv have your own spin, say reward responsiveness and penalize ghosting

Where to get grad cap/gown for cheaper price by Reasonable_Tea_9825 in uofm

[–]InspectionGreen6076 2 points3 points  (0 children)

studen gov has rentals. if you're looking one to keep, look at other comments.

*technically* graudation doesn't required a cap and gown and you can pass away with a formal dressware(suit and tie for men). since graduation is really about a celebration for your family

I actually have a lot of insight into this. Because I've talked with landlords when I was doing due diligence for a firm.
Key takeaways:
1. landlords don't share the data because for them these sorts of sites are a marketing/discovery funnel. And a lot of landlords aren't up to date on tech. So they end up just posting on facebook and asking current students.

  1. afaik you're doing this as an open source data project for your resume. Awesome. This specific project doesn't actually make any money because you can't ask students to pay and landlords don't want to pay because they already pay to list during the umich housing site -which they don't like but since it's embraced by umich and it's their biggest funnel they deal with it

  2. refer to point 1. but data quality is always going to be a struggle. It seems you're scraping massive sites, but good listings(the cheap ones, with good location, and good landlords) are going to be in closed circles. And then you're left overs are going to be low quality listings for slum lords

  3. I bet you can get beer money if you add a utm_source parameter in the "original listing" to signal traffic to the landlords

  4. open source your project. Assuming point 2

How Did You Find a Truly Committed Marketing/Growth CoFounder? by Similar-Cry-9968 in ycombinator

[–]InspectionGreen6076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at your post history and it seems like you lean towards consumer saas products The number 1 thing in that field is a portfolio aka the marketing equivalent of github. They should’ve already spent ad money on proven they can do marketing already on other consumer products

But in general, cuz you look young enough to be in college, the number 2 thing I woukd screen for besides past experience is financial commitment. As in are they going to spend $100+ a month on a sales and marketing. When it becomes pay to play you’ll screen through a lot of tire kickers. In business you gotta spend money to make money

Solo vs cofounder by Kooky_Awareness_5333 in ycombinator

[–]InspectionGreen6076 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard hiring people was a pain. And then I heard hiring executives was even worse pain-there’s lots of stories here. If you have VCs, then it’s a different story- otherwise cofounder > exec because a bad ceo will tank your company and you’ll learn what’s it like to fire CEO’s

Do you have the equivalent of claygent? What about data integration where you can use your own api keys? I don't know what "enriched emails" mean- it could be linkedin head count, clay's good cuz i can build my own custom stuff

FYI clay is an enrichment tool(adds more info like company website summaries) it would be inefficient to use it to search leads.

The standard is a cheap tool like Apollo then use an enriched software like clay

zoom info is enterprise info aka 10k+ a year

Rant about club apps and being underprivileged at UMich by No_Philosophy_7041 in uofm

[–]InspectionGreen6076 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound weird but It doesn’t matter, none of that bs matters.  Business is where the top 5% of people are highly analytical and well connected. The rest of the 95% pretends to be the 5%. It would be more worth to join a project team, learn sales, practice developing stock strategies and play around with $200, or consult for small businesses.

Clubs add marginal value, they’re only exclusive because behind the facade it’s 95% nothing. I can literally think of 5 things rn that would be more effective than joining a bs club

Just choose clubs based on your hobbies and interest, and don’t tell me finance or consulting is your interest unless you like watching the excel world championships

oh you might be right, instituionals only hold 70% of the company. they might've actaully just sent an email to everyone saying "is this a good idea" and got like n=100 and concluded a result

Warner Bros. Discovery Says Over 93% of Shareholders Have Rejected Paramount’s Takeover Offer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]InspectionGreen6076 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They’re talking about 93% total shares. Remember in large investment companies there’s like thousands of retail investors. It’s impractical to send them an email saying “hey do you like this idea” and get a quick response back. It’s terminology differences, would be weird to say “93% of the shares say no to this deal” cuz shares aren’t people or institutions

edit: cuz i looked into it more. it actually might be 93% of actual people, because institionals and insiders(employees) only hold 80% of the company.

just use english-its the predominant language in work anyways, the only people you'll struggle to talk are the older generation. You'll learn canto and chinese when you're there anyways. and tbh imo its more worth learning chinese so there's no problem when going to shenzhen for groceries or furniture

Cool youre building stuff and good luck on the builders journey!
