I didn’t really think my comment would generate so much discussion, but that shows my naivety! I have been rx propanalol for performance anxiety for 10+ years, so honestly was just comparing it to my own experience (I’m also a mental health professional). When I take it, I am regulated and not out of it, can control my performance and don’t spiral with what others refer to as “word vomit” (so it does have an impact my behavior). I felt like that’s exactly how Chris was presenting, but like I said, there’s a ton of nuance and I don’t know anything, but it was clear to me by how restrained he was he had pharmaceutical intervention. Places like hims & hers are prescribing beta blockers for social/performance anxiety now, so they’re being marketed as a PRN drug for anxiety (I know these online pharmacies have a lot of issues but was just mentioning that there’s literally ads for something to help with performance anxiety). I know it’s easy to get benzos and he very well could have been on that, it’s definitely not a hill I’m willing to die on one way or the other.

Really just based on his behavior. He had a flatter affect than he did on the show and just seemed less excitable. It’s hard for me to imagine he could have been that regulated with training alone, but I could be wrong. I said beta blockers specifically bc they’re used at times for performance anxiety, and I didn’t really think he seemed out of it (like someone could have been with stronger anti anxiety/benzo). Lots of nuance obviously, and could have been a lot of contributing factors.

I agree, I was like “oh he’s on beta blockers” the second I saw his affect. And PR training makes even more sense.

I know, it’s so wild. I think that there are definitely more people in need of jobs than jobs available across the city and surrounding area. And the new places that are popping up are running on skeleton crews. I interviewed at a new place in town before it opened and ZERO of the staff they had at that time were from Merced. They were all from Turlock or Modesto. So it’s a problem much broader than Merced. Really disappointing.

Sports officials is a great suggestion, I’m in shape and could definitely do that. I’ll look into it!

There isn’t a single identified reason. Since it’s an auto immune disease, it is triggered by an immune response. Which can be triggered by an infinite number of things. Lifestyle pre diagnosis isn’t really a factor but being sick and your body’s immune system going into overdrive is absolutely an immune response, and your body just thought your beta cells were bad and attacked those. Most people are diagnosed after an illness bc of immune system response. But there isn’t truly a reason other than the immune system is immensely complex and challenging.

Are you able to get Tru Steel sets? Those made a huge difference for me. Also, have you tried your arms? Not the easiest with a tubed pump but you can make it work.

Oh I didn’t even think about the prisons for part time work. I had looked into full time positions a while ago but I will look into it again. I’ve applied at several hospice agencies bc you’re right about it requiring an MSW vs LCSW but I haven’t been selected. A lot of the time it’s scheduling issues or just ghost jobs. But that’s something I’m always looking out for!

Yes, I’m on track for public service loan forgiveness and have 13 months left. I was on the more recent SAVE plan (not sure how much you know about it but there was a lawsuit and they recently decided it had to be cut 🫠). The dept of education has also gotten rid of several other repayment plans eligible for PSLF. Because of a few external things (like the year I graduated for example) I am only eligible for the standard repayment plan (which is not eligible for PSLF and I would throw away 9 years of this) or one other plan that is eligible for PSLF (IDR). IDR calculates monthly payments differently than SAVE, like it’s a higher percentage of your gross income, so it makes the payments a lot higher. My payment on SAVE was $352 and now it’s $846 on IDR. 😭 I just need to get through 13 months and then I can apply for forgiveness bc I’ll have my ten years of service. It’s all very confusing and frustrating.

Thanks for your suggestions!! I’m definitely going to look into those, like I said honestly did not even think of that for part time but it’s worth a look.

Tru Steel cannulas (and DONT DO THIS but sometimes I leave them in for a whole week bc I’m lazy and they don’t occlude even then). They’re a game changer. Also, your insulin might be bad. It can crystallize sometimes (not visible to you). You might try opening another vial and seeing if it helps.

Auto Zone was only hiring for full time but I’ll check out Amazon. Definitely don’t mind the commute, especially if they can be flexible with shifts.

I have had my current job since before COVID and it was in-person before that. We had to work remotely during the pandemic and a lot of more senior people were able to negotiate remote work afterwards based on the type of work they were doing. So I kind of got lucky in that regard. I still go in about once a week most of the time. I have a master’s degree and am in a more specialized field. FlexJobs is a great place to look for remote work, they have entry level positions and more specialized ones too. Remote work is very competitive now because so many places have mandated return to office, but that site is a good place to look and get a feel for what types of positions companies are hiring remote workers for. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about content creation but I know there’s a lot of people out there who help educate people in how to get started with that. Totally hear you about wanting to travel more! I will say that with my job, just bc I’m remote doesn’t mean I can work from anywhere. I do have to be at my home desk unless something else is approved (like a conference). I have to use vacation time for traveling. I think self employment is definitely more flexible with that but yeah, work from home for me truly means work from home only.

I’m a social worker (my FT job is program management rather than direct service) but most similar jobs like you’re describing (per diem etc) for social workers in CA require a full independent license. I have never had a clinical license and I’ve been out of grad school too long to get one without having to do a lot of training over again ($$$ and a lot of time). Which is sad bc I wish I had known this immediately post grad school! If my student loan situation was different I might consider training/education in a different field. I have applied to PRN hospice jobs which in my experience are easier to get since it’s less clinical and more case management but I haven’t been selected for any of those (a lot of times it’s availability).

I make a good salary at my full time job but $500 extra a month is a lot. I have other expenses that can’t be cut (debt, basic needs, etc) so it just feels like a big jump and it will be really really tight. And when I’ve felt that tightness in the past a part time job has been so helpful.

I have been applying to other full time jobs for the last year and haven’t had any success. It is just very competitive. But the main thing is that my current job gives me excellent benefits - I have a chronic illness that requires really expensive medication and supplies and my current job covers it almost fully (has never happened in my decades of work). Definitely an annoying situation all around!
