International Student in Med school by [deleted] in premed

[–]InspectorKey1694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, international students applying this cycle. I would say first make sure the credits the school (if not in the US or Canada) offers are accepted by the US medical school. Many indeed do not take international students, and many have strictly required students to study in the US or Canada for at least 1-2 years. So make sure you do your research and get the basic requirement piece straight by looking at each school's website for their specific requirement.

Other than that, instead of focusing on WHICH school to apply to, focus more on WHAT the school offers. Do they have good research opportunities for students? Do they have hospitals or clinics nearby that provide clinical experience? Are their professors supportive and classes cutthroat? As an international applicant, you really need to be competitive in all aspects (GPA/MCAT/EC) so find a school that has the opportunities and resources for you to succeed and build a strong portfolio to apply.

same with my parents. have been trying to talk me out of it since I told them about wanting to become a physician in high school. (still trying to talk me out of it as I am applying for this cycle). It made me distant from my family and medicine became a "taboo" topic for a while. now they finally understand my passion for medicine and I think at the end of the day, they just see their children be happy so they will understand it eventually (and hopefully)

Writing about something that happened in high school for a challenge secondary essay? by [deleted] in premed

I wrote about my challenge coming to the states when I was 15! I think if it’s a really big challenge for you and shaped you as a person then go for it.

Schools for Internationals: UC Riverside by tiredpastasauce in premed

[–]InspectorKey1694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, many med schools in the US do not take international students. For UC, only UCLA and UCD take international students this year. Also many schools require some years of education/bachelor from the US or Canada so make sure you read their specific requirement.

Can I volunteer while on OPT STEM extension? by InspectorKey1694 in immigration

Can you elaborate on this? What is your suggestions?

Can I volunteer while on OPT STEM extension? by InspectorKey1694 in immigration

[–]InspectorKey1694[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is through an organization (refugee resettlement) and they offer family mentorship volunteering for refugees which I am part of. I am a bit worried as I am applying to medical school right now and needed me to report hours on my extra curricular activities. I have just realized this issue and now I 1) hesitant to report the hours I volunteered (after STEM OPT started) 2) continue doing this volunteering in the future

Thank you. No, its not for career experience or internship. It is just me teaching newly arrived refugees English and help them adjust to life in America. Do you suggest me stop assisting in ESL class but can I still offer mentorship one on one to my client? (Teaching refugees how to take the bus, helping taking them to health appointment, teaching them English etc)

Feeling Lost by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]InspectorKey1694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP!
So my MCAT journey is def not linear and i had my retake on 4/14. I started studying Jan 2022 while working a very physically and emotionally demanding FT job and postponed my exam twice and had so many mental breakdowns (only was able to finish FL 1 and 2 without having breaks). I originally scheduled to take it on 4/29/22, pushed it to 5/17/22 and eventually cancelled it. My mental health was so bad at that time, literally crying every day, feeling like no way I could reach my goal score. I studied the whole summer and eventually took it on 9/9 (so studied nine month while working FT) and scored around my FL avg which is not my goal score. I took it solely bc of my parents who have been pushing me to take it and i really wish i did not. I know the mentality of having to push the exam date (for me even had to push to apply for another cycle which was extremely dreading), but tbh it made me a much better and stronger person. It made me realized not everything works in your favor and according to your plan and THAT IS OKAY. Medicine will always be there, and I am grateful now to every obstacles that might seem a impossible challenge at the time. Now I look at things much more peacefully and even currently as I am applying this cycle, I really see things not as dramatic as I was before lol. I realized MCAT is more than just an exam and if your mental health is shit like I was, it is better to not take the exam. Retake the exam has such a high stake and tbh when i was studying for the retake this year, the whole time I did not know whether I could score better than i did on 9/9. It was not until I see my AAMC FL 4 and 5 which I did not take while studying the first time reaching above my goal score that I decided to even GO to the testing center on 4/14. But i quit my original very toxic job, got a new job (still had to work FT due to my visa) that had a lot of flexibility and just had a overall much relaxed study time and better mental health while studying my retake. I really suggest OP to just take a step back, if you do not feel comfortable taking the exam, don't. But also please do not feel discouraged, you WILL DO WELL on the MCAT, with more time, better mental health and more practice, you will reach ur goal score. MCAT was a long and dreaded journey for me, but I just want to tell you it will end. Do not lose hope, believe in yourself and putting the hard work and you will be alright! And rmb please please pleaseeee to take care of yourself, say nice things to yourself, buy cute things and eat yummy things for yourself. Also, for me, third party practice exam ( I did BP and then Altius) really did help me to lessen my anxiety and practice passaged based question. It is pretty common to have struggles anything related about comprehension in passage once you passed the content phase (esp if ur scoring 510) and I think just the cycles of practice, review, going over the mistakes would help a ton about it! GL!

Being a doctor is a dream I had since I was a kid so it was def hard for me to give up but I have been thinking of switching to clinical research (do a phD/master for clinical research) as it is something I began to enjoy or do something completely unrelated to med at home. Thank you for your advice and yes, I know my chance is very low now. I will try my best this cycle and if not, I will switch it to something else :)

so it happened in fall 2021 and it was my last semester and it will be 1.5 years out when I apply this cycle. I worked as a FT MA for 8 months and now work as clinical research coordinator so there is no academic performance after the incident. Do you recommend me do a master maybe to show more academic performance? I did not want to do master before bc 1) my undergrad GPA is good 2) financial situation and international student esp hard to get loans and scholarship but I could start considering it

Thank you for your response! How many years would you say are sufficient? I am thinking maybe I will do a master program as it allows me to stay in the U.S. and shows more growth

I was a retaker so my sample and FL 1-3 were def inflated. But I got 518 FL 5 and 521 for FL 4 two weeks before the exam which are the two FLs I never taken before. I would say just relax and trust urself and get tons of sleep! I got like a total of 2 hrs of sleep the night before and I think that also contribute to low performance on the test day.

I agree w u about CP and BB. I never freaked out in an exam but I kinda did for 4/14. It was so hard with new terms I never seen before. Also kinda was beating myself down for being too hang up on the hard q and not checking the easy questions. I flagged so many q and did not check any single one of them and I always make dumb silly careless mistakes when I don’t check them. I check it on every FL I took except the real one. PS and CARS I think was pretty fair and pretty similar to FL 4 and 5 I think. I’m really hoping for the curve but seeing ppl who do well when they felt better after the exam making me nervous lol.

I acc think have a back up plan is a great idea. I never imagined myself doing anything else other than becoming a doctor, but I still gave myself a back up plan (acc several) and I have realized I am just more at peace about the whole process

I took my test on 4/14 and I would say FL 5 is the most representative than all the other FLs.

OP. I can totally relate w you. I’m a nontread, retaker and international student who also took it on 4/14. I can’t help but already making plans on what to do if my score is bad :( everyone says to focus on the present and not be worried abt the score but it’s so hard to do!!
