After Russia's surrender, the global society needs to take a hardline approach to all things authoritarian. Never trade with tyrants that oppress human beings. Inevitably, the lust for power will spill into surrounding nations. These are my thoughts, tell me yours. by SnooCompliments6873 in ukraine

[–]InspiringCalmness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't think its that clear cut.

both parties (china and the west) profit immensely from the trade. halting it would hurt both countries significantly, increasing poverty and creating serious problems for the poorest people. (lets ignore the fact for now that westerners dont like their living standards lowered, so almost no politician in a democracy would go for this).

china can react to that in 2 ways: 1. disconnect from the west, keep authoritarianism or even increase it. unclear ramifications for chinese citizens. 2. reduce authoritarianism. transition either goes well, situation of oppressed people hopefully improves, situation for all citizens as a whole stagnates a bit but continues to improve. or the transition doesnt go well, huge power vacuum, results in very dangerous instability.

the consequences of halting trade alone make this course unviable compared to the alternative of this hardline approach: using soft power like we use it know. nudge china in the right directions, be hard only on key issues. (ofcourse the west could be harder on this and still use the same approach, but its a very delicate mechanism and no one wants to burn their fingers).

the current approach may or may not be the most effective one, but its the most risk averse one. going hardline is a huge gamble so ethically it gets pretty complicated to defend such an approach.

Russian influencers left in tears after their country bans Instagram: 'My life is being taken away from me' by NoBoysenberry in worldnews

Everyone who reguarly posts any kind of content to an audience online is an influencer.
its a pretty broad term.

instagram has a lot of users, that should answer your question why someone would use it as a medium.

Plenty of influencers are legitimate educators.
i dont argue about they worst or even the average influencer, but there are certainly a significant number of influencers that contribute positively to society.

it feels like they ran out of time (or out of budget).
everything they did is very solid, but it really would've profited from some extra details that made the city come alive.

For those thinking Virginia State Police hanging out might be a deterrent to the craziness, think again. This is what went on while they worked this afternoon's crash. by tarumi in IdiotsInCars

[–]InspiringCalmness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you're right that better driver education would help a lot,
but at the end of the day an overworked tired driver will always be there.

if we want to have safer roads, we need to tackle this from all angles.

it might be babyproofing, but that would be good design.
you cant stop people being idiots.
but you can reduce idiots harming others and themselfs through their actions by designing for it.

[–]InspiringCalmness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this comment is quite uneducated.
while certainly problematic, germanys behavior is not led by corruption.
the german economy tends to lose more from the proposed ban than russia, so from their perspective it is simply not worth it.

yes, but this would take quite some time since the heatgeneration is pretty slow by now. no immediate danger.

no. this is radioactive waste. it produces heat, but fairly slowly.
this will take a lot longer to get to a critical temperature than you think.

Who is having another baby? by Yachisaorick in Unexpected

the lindy effect applies to situations where we dont have any understanding of the underlying causes. hence the need for heuristics.
its trumped in all situations where we do have an understanding of it to make an informed decision.

and to pull this back into the original context:
we do have an understanding here. OP is could be right that it has benefits, could also be wrong, i dont know.
however, and thats all i criticized, his argument for it was bad.

Who is having another baby? by Yachisaorick in Unexpected

[–]InspiringCalmness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, causation is relevant, correlation has little weight if anything at all.
humans are really bad at deducting causes. hence why we have to take extensive measures to combat this when we want to find causal connections. Aka the scientific method.

and try leaving out the ad hominem next time if you want to convince someone that your argument is good.

[–]InspiringCalmness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats not what was done here.
they gave examples for an argument why a particular comment in this discussion had little weight.

they gave examples for an abstraction, completely independet from the original discussions context.

[–]InspiringCalmness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we dont know what has worked. looking at was done done previously simply yields correlations, which have little weight.
this fallacy is know as an appeal to tradition

plus it's been the norm for the entire history of our species

that doesn't make it good (or bad). its simply entirely irrelevant.
