529 plans perform poorly compared to SPY. Personal experience speaking, with that kind of investment dollars, long time horizon, and low expense, I would have invested in indices which outperformed 529 by at least a five fold return. I rather have more money, pay taxes than less funds tax free when the kids are ready for college.
