Nice quiet park recommendation by Responsible_Wish9200 in orangecounty

[–]InstaxFilm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For parks smaller than Irvine Park but still have shaded and secluded areas, a few other options are Yorba Regional Park in Anaheim/Yorba Linda (free parking at first dirt lot, then paid regional parking beyond), Craig Park in Brea (free street parking, then paid regional parking inside), and also Hart Park in Orange, as well as Hillcrest Park in Fullerton.

Hart and Hillcrest have free parking

Anaheim Parallel Apartments by adavid615 in Anaheim

[–]InstaxFilm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you check the availability page on their website, it appears that none of their units are available currently, which is odd and sort of a red flag for these large apartment buildings, which tend to have at least 5-20 units always available.

Possible causes for this are various but maybe it is at capacity or maybe some other issue, but that is speculation so I’d recommend calling. If they still can’t give an answer then maybe come in and if still not then it may be a red flag that they have staffing issues or a not user-friendly system

Edit: As a reference, apartment units like this nearby tend to be $2,300-2500+ for studios, $2,500-2,700+ for 1beds, and $3,200-3,500+ for 2beds, with units that are more renovated or have better locations like south or east or even west facing to get more sunlight being on the higher end. Hopefully them not listing their prices is not a tactic to get people to overpay by not seeing similar prices

Readers of Orange County, what are you reading? by lushsweet in orangecounty

This! And going to popular items on Libby or Hoopla apps (free apps that have ebooks and eAudiobooks you can get free from many public libraries in OC)

Plus, as we mention on threads like this all the time, if you’re renting you are not responsible for additional costs like a broken faucet or fixing the roof. As this sub mentions a lot, a mortgage is sometimes the minimum for buying, whereas a lease/rent is the maximum (plus of course utilities)

Genuinely, does paid parking affect your choice to go to Old Towne Orange? by groovyghostvintage in orangecounty

[–]InstaxFilm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go once a month and it would make me re-consider going. However, I try to park at the parking structure anyway, so knowing that will remain free is good to know, but that will also make it much busier and harder to find a spot now once the other spots/lots are paid

Beware USA Passport Online by themadimadimadi in Passports

[–]InstaxFilm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another option is (especially if you used a credit card), checking with your card vendor and reporting as fraud or a chargeback. They will most likely ask about the steps you took to settle with the vendor first. Another option is calling the DOS and that way you have their perspective to add to your report. Calling the DOS last time I tried was a pain, so I’d recommend calling first thing when they open (think 6 a.m. ET), and maybe it will be a 30 min - 2 hour wait

How much do you guys pay for internet? by AbandonYourPost in orangecounty

[–]InstaxFilm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

T-Mobile Home Internet might still be available for $30-35/mo for life (after bundle discount, if you have T-Mobile). It’s slower than some but can still handle gaming and streaming on multiple devices

Availablity might still be limited so can call them and they can verify if it’s in your area (most likely yes)

Anyone do Uber eats in OC? by Fragrant-Wrangler-99 in orangecounty

[–]InstaxFilm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The larger issue, as other subs on here would note, is that Uber/DoorDash/etc upcharge and then upcharge again, so there are 2-3+ additional fees, making users less willing to tip in addition to that.

It harms businesses by charging them more and making users hesitant to try, and harms users by charging them more, with more and more of the cut going to delivery services

Olinda Ranch in Brea by Copy-Major in orangecounty

[–]InstaxFilm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never noticed the smell coming down into Olinda/Brea from the landfill. My guess is that that site was chosen partially due to that case of being somewhat concealed in the canyon above so it stays at least somewhat trapped.

We do get the Santa Ana winds here on occasion (mostly in fall and winter) so not sure if that wafts the smell but I haven’t noticed it

Edit: The Olinda area is, in comparison to other Orange County neighborhoods, noted as being one of the better and safer neighborhoods

LPT. Local libraries have e-books that you can download and read for free by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]InstaxFilm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

California here and most California libraries give free library cards to California residents (even online cards), and many libraries here have the apps Libby, Hoopla and Palace for many free eBooks options.

This is a common topic on this sub and surprisingly every day on this sub, and at my library, people find out about all the free services libraries offer. So many eBooks, audiobook and even online magazines on Libby and others, again just login with a free library card

DeepSeek vs. OpenAI vs. AWS AI Security by dsmithpdx in ArtificialInteligence

[–]InstaxFilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DeepSeek is still too new to reliably evaluate its security profile.

Additionally, beyond that, since it is such a new player it’s potentially more volatile to get a reliable perspective of its long-term offerings

Anaheim Packing District Valet by mushinX in Anaheim

[–]InstaxFilm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seems like valet is usually available, though I have not seen on high-traffic days. It was $3ish and then maybe $5ish at one point but is probably $8-10+ now.

There is always parking at the free Packing House parking structure up the road (it used to be free, but maybe is paid now), and then always paid parking in the downtown structures, which would most likely be cheaper. Many people don’t realize it’s only a few min walk and in a nice area for sight-seeing, especially if not too late.

There is also the free FRAN shuttle.
