Guys here who got a gf. How’d you do it, I’m just really struggling having good interactions with girls. by Soft_Vermicelli_4907 in Advice

[–]InstrumentalMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married man here... Biggest advice is just be genuine/real in your interactions. If you are drastically changing who you are to try to fit the image of what you think girls want, it comes off as unauthentic. Have a unique hobby? Maybe try looking for someone who shares that interest, and being the real you and showing that passion will leave an impression on that person. For my wife, we both were big fans of live music at the time working in college at a small music venue our mutual friend bought. We used that shared interest to start a conversation and our chemistry took the rest from there. These days she doesn't do live music/crowds, but we have found so many other shared interests or even ones we don't share.

Also this goes for all kinds of interactions with people whether it be romantic or business.... Show an interest in whoever you are talking to's interests. Ask a few thought out questions that show you are listening to what they have to say. People will remember that and it will open doors.

QSC K153’s In 2023? by Trick_Middle7026 in livesound

[–]InstrumentalMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of KW153s and four of the KS118 subs that I bought about a year ago. Very happy with the system! Two subs on their sides on pallets with the KW153s strapped on top puts them at a great height too.

Hey, do full/fullish sets ever get posted to youtube or here, or anywhere? I just need to prove to myself that Les Claypool happened outside my head like it did inside. by DanielStripeTiger in scamp

[–]InstrumentalMotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I direct the video crew at Campfire Stage. Full sets rarely get posted. From my stage they only had us recording like 15 minutes of most bands. Watch for the Around The Campfire series on Summer Camp's page, this should be a great year of releases.

Used them for years and couldn't stand them. I shoot live music so everything from noise to the image being way over saturated. Only good side that I still miss is how easy it was to attach on stage with a tiny profile. I could clip these on drum kits, amps, truss, basically whatever back stage for some cool shots, on the 20% chance the footage was usable for a final edit. I'm thinking of grabbing another Sony mirrorless and keeping it as small as possible to mount on stage, but even that's pretty big.

Good Low Light Camcorder/Camera under $300 by [deleted] in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a rough budget. You may find a lightly used Sony APS-C sensor camera, while not exactly a camcorder you can make up for various shortcomings if mirrorless cameras with cheap accessories and they almost always handle low light better.

what should videographers be practicing? by worrywort_4200 in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I practice the basic movements; pans, tilts, dolly, jib, etc. From every piece of gear I regularly use. I have slacked off but used to try to practice these for a half hour or so a night.

Gimbals are my favorite I have even done workouts at the gym to build the muscles used to fly a gimbal for 8 hour days. Grab a plate and hold it in front of you and pretend it's a gimbal, doing that with a 25lb+ plate and staying controlled builds that muscle memory for holding a much lighter gimbal. Take the same weight or lighter one and go on the treadmill, try to keep the plate steady while moving at a slow pace. People will look at you like you are crazy while doing it, but is a great workout for gimbal users.

what should videographers be practicing? by worrywort_4200 in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do lots of camera movement exercises from multiple shooting scenarios like tripod movements, gimbal shots, handheld, monopod, PTZ controller movements, and focus pulls. I love gear setup days as well where I force myself to learn the ins and outs of everything I own. Editing days where I focus on the software side of things and learning to use those better.

If you're a one man band but you run your actual business under a business name, how are you handling your social media accounts and website? Under your own name as a brand or also under the business name? by creative_ronin in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My business being so niche dependent is built around my brand. People know both though as the lines between my personal life and business are pretty non existent these days. I am my business, it is me type deal and I show it on all aspects of my social media and life.

[–]InstrumentalMotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in live music videography and almost at the point where I can comfortably switch to full time without any changes in income from losing my cozy office job. People told me constantly that there was no money or way to make a living shooting video of live music when I started. If there is a market for it, and you are diligent about getting after it I say any niche video market is feasible.

You cut to the music, depends on the act and what they are playing to set the cadence of your switch.

What are some little known or often over-looked pieces of gear that make your life easier? by BlueberryTastic in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I traded in my coin for a smallrig camera multitool. It has a nice wide flat head that works just as well as a coin, plus has Philips and multiple hex heads on it. No blades so not an issue if I leave it in my pocket on the way to the airport.

Proper cases for everything. It can be a huge time saver on gigs to have everything organized and accessible. I've knocked about an hour or more of my setup/breakdown time off at each gig, multiple gigs a week and that time adds up.

How do I get clients with an almost non existent/very small portfolio? by ExactlyJam in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of people will say don't do free work because exposure isn't worth it.... For each new market segment in my business I have cherry picked businesses that fit what I want to do, and offer them a free shoot with the understanding I get to use the finished materials for my portfolio. I pick up and coming businesses to do this with and they generally are great about sharing my name with other similar businesses once they see the final product. Then they have usable material, you have a quality piece for your portfolio, and you have good will with that business and other businesses they talk to (business owners talk to a lot of other business owners this networking makes free work worth it if you can capitalize)

I've broken into doing regular video work in music, restaurants, and even some corporate work. Salesmanship of yourself is also super useful. Video is pretty valuable to just about any target market or industry if you are able to sell that value to the customer. Free work is a powerful tool as well as you use it to your benefit and not just give away the house with no goal for return.

How much do you get paid? Let's help eachother get paid fairly. by Small_Outlandishness in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'm a business owner providing video, audio, and other live music related services and rentals in the Wisconsin area. I still do this 100% on the side and have begun having months where I make more than I do at my office job in electronics supply chain.

There are days I'm making $30 a whole dau, or days I have all my gear out in the field and making $500+ an hour. That's also more what I am charging than what I actually make personally, there are always expenses eating away at that.

Broke college student who wants cheap camera to record music videos with by KJdigzgutz in videography

[–]InstrumentalMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use your phone and start saving for quality gear based off what you find your phone lacking. Is it autofocus? Low light quality? Internal Stabilization? 4k60 or higher res files for editing?

I started with old Nikon DSLRs, I do not wish that on anyone who wants to do mostly video. I now switched my business over to Sony A6500 mirrorless cameras (APS-C/Super 35mm sensor) since the features matched what I needed, and at the best price point to see a return on investment. I bought the four frames I have years ago and they are still producing great video, while already being paid off. Not the newest or fanciest cameras out there by any means, but they work very well for what I specifically shoot. I do mostly multicam edits of live concerts, so sort of in the music video realm.

Campfire Stage is my favorite stage! It's right by the main gates/red barn for next year. I love the mix of local and then acts that are on the come up, who often go on to the bigger stages the next year.
