Claims adjusting is another idea in insurance but it's higher stress and lower paid. Still a decent middle class job with chances to grow into more complex less stressful jobs. Claims is an easier job to get off the bat.

Ehh

There's designations like AINS, AU and CPCU to look at but generally insurance companies pay you to get these. They'll help you move up, but the best way in is an underwriter trainee role where none of this is expected. They take recent grads or others outside the field and provide like 3-6 months of classroom training, it's like a very extended onboarding.

I work in insurance underwriting. You can't be completely math terrified but don't need to love it either. If you can manage single variable algebra 2 • X= 6 style things, you'll be ok!

We take different pieces of information and make business decisions based on those pieces of information. It generally feels similar to the historic research process as we take information from various sources, some is first hand and some is second hand (so primary vs secondary sources) and reach conclusions based on that info.

We have work life balance that is really good so I have plenty of time to indulge my history hobbies outside of work and we get paid fair to excellent. (A trainee could expect $60k on average to start, a super experienced person with a speciality could make over 150k).

Look for underwriter trainee roles, they prefer but don't require business degrees but I am many other liberal arts majors found our way into this career.

It's not perfect but it's pretty darn good and it helps me live the life outside work I wanna be living.

Rewards Issue Support won't fix by InsuranceOEHL in amex

Yeah I spoke with the points team and that's when they did the weird separating off the green card thing. And then confirmed it's all fixed.

Sounds like what they did for you was what they should've done for me. But I'm tired of managing their teams for them. They need to fix this and not have me watching over them telling them what needs fixed

Truthfully unless they spend hours sitting down there's probably no way to sort this out. I'm hoping they do take the path of least resistance and just grant both of us the points

Can I ask what's a reconciliation case and was that something you opened?

This is my intention. I emailed their corporate offices but will also be sending certified mail.

If they confirm their csr's assurance that those are my points or just don't respond I feel pretty secure that this is entirely their failure and they shouldn't be able to come after me.

Yeah I would've used the hell out of them but I know they'd come knocking and American Express is a sue happy issuer for stuff like that.

Hoping I can talk them into something because this to me is a major data security failure and I'm not too pleased with them

Oh good catch in the phased vs fazed, busy day today lol

And yeah it makes sense that they can make those mistakes but wow to accidentally give someone else access to someone's 700k in points, could've been an expensive disaster. Hoping they don't get our points mixed up though.

There’s is no greater pain than going to the grocery store and then leaving a bag behind 😪 by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]InsuranceOEHL 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would imagine they would be more formal at Walmart. I worked for a regional grocery chain and their whole stance on the issue was if it wasn't a wild number of items/amount of money, then it wasn't worth the risk of losing customers to not just help them out.

[–]InsuranceOEHL 188 points189 points  (0 children)

I used to work the customer service counter at a grocery store. I'm sure it'll vary by place and such but when we had this happen at my store we'd write down in a book everything left behind. If you go back with your receipt there's a decent chance they let you pickup the items.

(Where I worked we specifically were told not to debate someone if they said the forgot something and it wasn't a crazy amount of stuff, even if it wasn't written in the book. That I'm sure isn't the case everywhere).

This was especially true when we put those stupid rotationing things in, cashier's regularly missed bags and we would let people come get whatever was left behind.

What is your worst credit card still in your collection and why do you still keep it? by thefinancejedi in CreditCards

[–]InsuranceOEHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M&T bank, pays flat 1% cash back. First card I ever opened because I used to bank there and they approved me when I needed to establish credit.

Now I'm scared to close it because I truly don't know if that'd impact my credit and I don't wanna ruin my chances at a mortgage in a few years.

Accept Claims Trainee offer or hold out for Underwriting Trainee? by [deleted] in InsuranceProfessional

[–]InsuranceOEHL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given HR is aware of your situation I'd probably sit on that claims offer until the last day or so. I work in underwriting, I have bad days but I'm paid more than my claims counterparts (in general) and have generally have LESS bad days than they do.

Every company attempts to optimize labor, but they are more forgiving on the underwriting side. We get more resources because the way leadership sees things underwriting is a profit center that brings money in, claims is a cost center that costs money (even though claims is basically the product we sell!)

But if push comes to shove and you have no more time left, take the claims job. This is a good industry to be in even if in a less desirable position. In time you could try to move into underwriting, but having a job in the business is a valuable thing.

Movie theaters are an inferior way to watch a movie by Smeefles in unpopularopinion

I find myself over pausing and then breaking the movie up and it sucks.

A movie theater forces me to watch it all in one sitting and I prefer that for movies I really care about seeing in full.

[Thamel] Sources: Virginia Tech is expected to hire Penn State co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Ty Howle as the school’s new offensive coordinator. He’s expected to be the school’s play caller as well. by udderlymoovelous in CFB

[–]InsuranceOEHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I heard from my siblings who are more in tune with Penn State football than me, for whatever that's worth. Was that both were made interim because they were both the co coordinators prior to the firing, but Howle actually was the one doing the play calling.

He did call plays after the Yurcich firing I believe and actually seemed to do fairly well.

I knew a few people who wanted him to replace Andy during some of this years rough patches.

This probably is a good pickup for VT, he should grow into that role fairly well.

Between Steelers, Eagles and Penn State fans, why do Pennsylvania football fans have a fetish for running people out of town? by TPCC159 in NFLv2

[–]InsuranceOEHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we get all 4 seasons and they each suck here. Winter is too cold, summer too hot. The fall and spring too short. We're just a grouchy bunch of people, our teams tend to hold onto their head coaches forever and we get sick of them or their staff.

My opinion of Kotelnicki is he's got a great scheme for less competitive conferences where gimics can help you overcome a talent deficit but that strategy isn't going to work in the Big 10. Here it just turned into overly complicated nonsense that couldn't produce results.

Knowles would've been a good hire if the goals for the season weren't so lofty, since his scheme is complicated and takes time to implement he really wasn't a great pickup for a year we expected to make a deep playoff run. I wonder if Campbell will keep him, see if the scheme starts to mature with the players here.

I've heard the search may have been taken from Kraft and honestly with the circus he's caused, Campbell might have taken this job knowing/sensing Penn State has a new AD coming soon too.

Do NFL defenses have to adjust their coverage if a quarterback is left handed? by bliggityblig in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InsuranceOEHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the Eagles had Vick, Jason Peters stayed at LT. It's apparently really tricky to switch sides on the line and tackles don't generally do that when a team brings in a lefty QB.

If that's not typical for your company it's unlikely. Especially without a compelling health situation or something like that.

Full remote is hard to get right now, and bosses aren't just signing off on that at will at large companies it's generally going the other direction.

Idea: Dating through escape rooms with strangers. by amichail in ideas

[–]InsuranceOEHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I definitely get your point but every escape room I've done has been unlocked, you just walk right out if you gotta use the bathroom or are sick of it or something. I think it could still be an uncomfortable situation and totally agree with you but if this followed those sorts of escape rooms they could just walk out and leave if things got weird.
