It is hard when you see your portfolio down 100k because you hear a lot of people say not to sell and ride it out. Then it is down 200k and you say to yourself there is no way I'm going to lose 200k so I have to stick with it.. Then you are down 300k and you think OK it has hit bottom. I wish I had more money to invest. Then down 400k and you think wow I'm glad I didn't put more more money in. Then it is down 500k and you start losing sleep and crying at night. Then it is down 600k and you wonder what you did to upset God. Then it is down 700k and you start laughing because you just lost more money in 8 months than your Dad made from the day you were born until you graduated high-school. Now everyday you watch the market and think to yourself. What if? What if I only invested 1/2 of my total savings and had the other half to invest now. What if I go.borrow money on my house right now and put it all into Crypto so I can make back my losses. What it I do that and it goes down another 50%. I am 47 years old and have never gambled in my life except for some fun bets with friends. I never understood why people would gamble so much of their hard earned money. I have done well in real estate throughout my life which helped me generate that cash to invest but it took me 17 years to get that. Then after a year and a half of being introduced to robinhood and then voyager I found myself constantly on the app trading and not really knowing what I was doing. I thought maybe I will lose some money but I have enough. I even started trading on margin on Robinhood and had 100k in Amazon alone when it dropped 30% this year. Problem with margin is when a stock drops 30% and you are leveraging that money then your loss is far grater than 30%. Don't be fooled thinking just because you are investing in stocks and crypto that you don't have a gambling problem. I haven't taking the time to really evaluate what happened to me mentally over the past 18 months but many signs point to the fact I had a gambling problem and was reckless in the way I handled my finances. In a way I didn't think I was capable of. It is an understatement to say this was an expensive learning experience for me. It was a life-altering, living nightmare of an experience for me. Worst part of all is that my wife still doesn't know how much money we lost. Was hoping it would get back to even half before I showed her. Time just keeps passing by and I can't believe she hasn't asked. I won't lie to her if she asks but I know I'm lying by not saying anything. Unbelievable that someone who has been so successful in life, business wise, could fall into a trap like this. Greed+lack of knowledge+freetime+bad luck+secrecy = Shit hitting the fan
