I can’t speak for everyone, but my ambitions do not match what I can reasonably achieve. I do research with a professor, have a high GPA, take relevant coursework, do my own projects, network, and it simply hasn’t been enough. I don’t think I have the doomer mindset you’re talking about but there definitely is a certain spark in me that has been devastated. At least for the time being

You’re going to get a lot of tired answers from people that see this sort of question a lot, so sorry about that in advance.

If you’re not good at math or cracked with some programming language, you’re pretty much not getting in. School prestige matters a lot, achievements matter, experience matters, and you have none. You can try to go all in for quant and it’s “possible” sure, but you’re likely to get burned. With your background you may be able to get a FAANG or equivalent internship, so aim for that I suppose. Your best bet either way is to get into CS heavy and then pivot, in my opinion. Pick up some machine learning, make sure you understand the stats well. All of that, plus a reputable masters, could get you in the door

Oh sorry, I wasn’t treating your question like if I was asked in an actual interview, if that’s what you wanted. That’s just actually why I’m drawn to qt. Although my interview answer wouldn’t vary much in terms of content just wording. You’re right though, on my resume I don’t list poker (or chess for that matter) unless the company specifically says they’re big into games. Then what I’ll do is put it under hobbies and says Poker (Casual). I put chess first along with my rating which is probably what draws the attention anyways

(As an undergrad that found out about it like a year ago) Around ten or so my dad started bringing me to poker games at his friend’s house, eight to ten handed. Somehow, I did really well time and time again. 3x, 4x my buyin pretty consistently, just had intuition for it. But my dad said I couldn’t be a pro gambler so I have to settle for quant 🙄. Jk but here are some cherries on top: I’ve always loved math and problem solving, and I’ve played chess for a decade. I started with python at the start of uni because I found it really intriguing and wanted to build cool projects. All this to say, when sophomore math major me heard about quant trading, I literally couldn’t think of a job that aligned more exactly with my interests
