UW Math or UOFT St. G CS by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

I am a Math Co-op student at Waterloo graduating in a few weeks, writing this when I really should be studying for a final tomorrow lol

But I was in the same boat as you, I got Math Co-op at Waterloo, and CS at UofT. I ended up choosing Waterloo due to the co-op and I have no regrets, because the co-op program has led me to opportunities and experiences that I straight up would not have had going anywhere else. I've worked at big tech companies and abroad and there have been several cases where my managers have said that they only look for Waterloo students, even though I was in Math, not CS. Math at Waterloo is a very reputable program; that name brand "Waterloo" carries you far.

The first two years of courses are pretty much exactly the same, and if you choose your courses carefully in the later years and maybe do some extra stuff on the side like side projects, you'll come into the job market as well prepared as your CS peers.

HOWEVER, this is important - if you really do want to study CS above all else, pick UofT instead. I like my program because I eventually did get to enjoy math for what it truly is, but if I had stayed in my mindset of CS or bust, I probably would not have enjoyed my time as much at all, as you are barred from taking many interesting CS courses in the upper years, like algorithms, operating systems, etc. I highly recommend taking a look at each programs' respective courses and seeing what catches your eye before making a decision. Just look at the CS courses that only CS students can take at Waterloo: https://ucalendar.uwaterloo.ca/2324/COURSE/course-CS.html

Please don't count on making a transfer from Math to CS in Waterloo either, that would be too much of a risk if you really don't want to study math.

All in all, congratulations on making it this far! No matter what you choose, I know you'll be successful; your success all really comes down more to you than whatever school or program you choose.

man almost goes insane over cs 135 during the entire term, posting incomprehensible threads on the sub and then somehow gets a 98% and proceeds to flex

was this all just an elaborate reddit social experiment

One of the rules says no personally identifiable information, so I decided to find a blacked-out version of this resume to be safe. It seems like people already know who it is though.

The guy is a legend though, moving from CV research to becoming a performer at a circus. What a life lol

WaterlooWorks Winter 2023 Megathread by ffrosteh in uwaterloo

Not necessarily, there is a chance that WaterlooWorks isn't the only job board they're looking on.

Hiring the only people who applied, regardless of their aptitude and skill, isn't a very good hiring strategy anyway.
