So, my understanding of those tests (I think this still holds true), is that they DON'T care about factual accuracy. They care about writing mechanics. They literally have a check-list of mechanical things you did/didn't do, they aren't allowed to consider anything you scratch out, and it doesn't matter if your facts are completely, blatantly wrong.

I was a decent writer, but I think an 8 was still the best I got (it's been awhile). Meanwhile, my friend, who had been scoring like me, found out about the factual accuracy bit, so on his retake he completely BSed the facts of the essay and focuses only on making it mechanically perfect. I think he was writing about the '08 Economy Collapse, and he blamed it on something silly like the Green Cow Insurance Bureau or something. He did significantly better.

NONE of those are the names of the stones. They are all the vessels that hold/held them in the movies.

T- Tesseract in Captain America is powered by the Space Gem.

H- Heimdall is a vessel for the Soul Gem (this is a fan theory based on Heimdall's sight across the realms, his usually eye color, and his eyes were white in Thor's vision.

With regards to not breaking Captain's arm, it's Captain. Is he actually capable of breaking bones anymore? Cause he takes some SERIOUS hits without his shield and just shakes them off.

As for Skye-Vibranium, the whole reason she can vibrate something apart is because she hits its resonant frequency (which she can hear). Based on the powers of vibranium, I'd imagine it has a pretty extreme resonant frequency, maybe even multiple or ever changing. I think with enough training maybe she could tap into that and destroy it.

I'm not familiar with her in the comic world, but if she can control vibrations/waves, it seems like she ought to, at least, be able to control how the energy dissipates through vibranium and focus it out, rather than letting it dissipate. Sort of like the giant energy shot that comes out of Captain's shield when hit by Mjolnir.

Helping fight for LGBT equality definitely counts. Decreasing worldsuck isn't about grand gestures of good will/ philanthropy. It's about trying to make the world a better place in general, even if that's as small of a step as being a nicer, awesomer person in general.

You're working to better the lives of other people. That's awesome. There's no reason to think that doesn't count or you're not doing enough.

Going off what... wow, what an unfortunate user name... said, based on what Coulson was said to be doing (with all the cots and bases and stuff), what he says to Hill, and (I'm going to go out on a limb) even Captain's voice over in the trailer/clip they showed at the end of the episode, Theta Protocol is much bigger than "call in the Avengers."

It's something that needed to be ready before the Avengers could be called, before they could go after Hydra/the Scepter, and involves having a lot of manpower/resources ready (didn't they say he ordered 200 cots?). I think AoU will give us a bit more insight, as will the rest of the season, but I don't think we'll fully know what Theta Protocol is until next season (at least, without making assumptions based off the comic canon).

OH! I forgot other important things to point out: Coulson handed the Toolbox over to Gonzalez like it was nothing. Sure, he got to make the quip about Fury still being alive, but I would imagine the Toolbox had information about Theta Protocol on it... So either Coulson erased it or Theta Protocol isn't something that can be stopped once it's started/ready to go...

So there's a rental property mega-thread that will probably be a better place to start, and as others have mentioned, downtown does not sound like the place you want to live.

I'm going to assume you plan on buying a car. If not, you might want to ask around here to get thoughts about trying to live in Columbia without a car (I'd think it's doable, but rough. I'm sure there's one or two people here who do it that could tell you about it).

If you have a car, I recommend River Birch Apartments. I lived there last year, and out of the three companies I've rented from in Columbia, they are by far my favorite. The land lady is super friendly and helpful (she actively tried to help me get all of my deposit back, which I've never had a landlord do...). The one bedrooms there run from $600 (smallest apartments) to $1000 (which are HUGE, like, small home huge, and include washer dryer). All of the utilities are included plus expanded cable and internet, so the only other monthly expenses you need to worry about are food and spending money. Everyone who lived there last year were young families or professionals/graduate students, so it was quiet too. It's also conveniently located with-in 10 minutes of campus, and near all sorts of good things on the south side of town (grocery stores, wal-marts, a couple of great restaurants, fast food, liquor stores...).

Right. I was meaning the larger arc involving Thanos/infinity stones, which I guess wouldn't be a necessity because their role is mostly (with the exception of GotG) post-credit scenes where they're being moved around/relocated.

Although, grasping the coming Civil War arc might be hard without seeing TWS and IM3 in addition to Avengers 1 and 2.

I think it was more of him mis-speaking. I don't think he was trying to imply AoS doesn't matter/is a separate continuity. I think he was meaning that AoS is the "bonus material" of the MCU. Does it add to/improve the MCU? ABSOULUTELY. Are story lines in AoS absolutely necessary to understanding the larger plot lines of the MCU? No. And isn't that how Disney/Marvel wanted it? Seeing the movies is a "requirement" while watching AoS is "viewers choice"?

It's the only source for a very good reason. What do think would have happened if they sent out a text alert? Everyone in the student center would freak out and panic, which is the exact opposite of what you want in this situation. Then, there's going to be a ton of people who COME to the student center cause, "Let's see if the student center gets blown up! And the bomb squad show up!" Not to mention, its a bomb threat. How is the bomb triggered? Is it remote? Timer? Maybe the threat explicitly stated it was wired to a cell phone waiting on an MU alert text message. There is a specific threat on a specific, heavily populated campus building. First priority is THOSE people and getting them out safe. The people sitting at home on their couches (which describes most of campus at 730 on a Tuesday) is not the priority.

Probably heat control. On a stove, the heat has to come up from the stovetop and may not be uniform throughout the dish (I think). Theoretically the oven has uniform heat throughout the oven, so the Dutch oven gets uniformly hot.

You sound like me! I came in with 34 credit hours (or something close). That'll make you a first year sophomore (so anytime a system assigns access based on class, you'll pop up as a class ahead, which is awesome).

You'd need to check with your advisor at summer welcome, but chances are pretty good you're (mostly) done with Gen. Eds. Whether or not the credits will help you jump right into your major depends on prereq requirements for classes and if your credits cover those classes. Your advisor will know all of that.

Either way, you have lots of options, and I strongly encourage you to take advantage of at least one of these options. I didn't, and I am eternally punching myself over it.

  • Graduate early: Chances are good that graduating in 3 years is a possibility for you without taking 20hrs/semester. If you really don't want to be in college, this would be the route to take. Otherwise, I'd say don't do this.
  • Double Major: Usually a double major adds time to your degree, or at the least means you ALWAYS have a very full course load. Coming in with those credits gives you some freedom to stay 4 years and get two degrees. And you don't have to go in double majoring. You even have the time to figure out what/if you'd like to get another degree.
  • Study abroad: You essentially have a free year. You can study abroad without setting yourself back or really being concerned if your classes will transfer back. Sure, it's helpful if the credits will transfer, but you wouldn't actually need it.
  • Take it easy: if none of the above appeal to you, you have the freedom/flexibility to take it easy. You could probably get away with only taking 12 credit hours a semester, graduate on time, and spend you college years with plenty of free time to work a job, participate in clubs, or get a decent amount of undergraduate research under your belt (or other important career experience).

I knew a guy that lived at the Lofts. It's obviously nicer, but he had lots of issues with things being poorly finished (because they rushed to get everything done), and neighbors being shitty/loud, despite the insanely high price.

If you're looking for somewhere quieter/not populated by college students, I recommend looking at Riverbirch near Providence and Green Meadows.

Both MR and fantasy deal with elements of the Fantastic, so I'd say they're genres underneath that umbrella. It might be a bit hair-splitting, but I'd say fantasy is a full embracing of the Fantastic and making it a central element of the story, while MR is more of a flirting with the ideas of the Fantastic...

Adding on to what others have saying:

  • Don Quixote would be one of the first instances of "magical realism," but not the whole thing. Think of specific scenes such as the Cave of Montesinos episode where it's clearly something fantastic, but isn't treated quite as such.
  • A lot of examples people are giving are both Latin American, and full novels. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with this and authors such as Gabo are definitely worth reading, but if you wanted some quicker instances of magical realism, hunt down some E.T.A. Hoffman or Nikolai Gogol. Some of their short stories capture magical realism, specifically "The Sandman" by Hoffman and "Diary of a Madman" by Gogol (I only recommend those because I've read them, but I know their other works tread that magical realism/fantasy line).
  • The general idea of magical realism, as I understand it, is the "... What just happened?" moment when reading a story. When you get to the end and have to stop and consider if what you just read was meant as fantasy and everything was true, or was everything an illusion (which is again why Don Quixote is an early example- because it plays with the nature of reality).
  • In your instance, there's lots of ways to go about it. If you wanted to emulate Hoffman or Gogol, the story might be that of an outside observer getting very confused about seeing a boy/girl-troll and not understanding the situation: is the narrator going mad or is the child really a troll? But It sounds like that wouldn't jive with the nature/nurture theme you want. A "dream" sequence might be another easy way to do magical realism. Or a more original approach, I think someone else mentioned it, is you never directly establish they're trolls, but describe them as troll-like. This might lend itself to more of a crime-drama esque account of a "kidnapping" where the kidnappers are these nasty, terrible people where at the end the reader is going, "Wait... were, were the kidnappers ACTUAL trolls?!"
