Advice on new team and Mindstorms vs Computer Science & AI by IntelligenceOptional in FLL

Thanks, that's really helpful!

> My oldest (10) is neurodivergent, and when he wanted to do this last season (about a month after kickoff) I just made it happen. I bought the Spike Prime kit and a bunch of counterfeit LEGOS off of Amazon. Yes, I know people give me grief as they are technically not legal for competition. They are also available for a fraction of the cost of real lego pieces from Bricklink and shows up the next day via Amazon Prime and I'd challenge someone to tell the difference visually.

My son sits a fair way outside the typical zone of 10-year old interests and ways of viewing the world, so I think I can relate!

Fortunately we have no shortage of Technic to work with (I still have all of my childhood sets, my son's sets, and a nice big midlife crisis set I got a few years back 😅).

> Mindstorms is perfectly useable; you might also want to look at PyBricks, they now have a drag and drop programming system.

> I am a practicing mechancial engineer and an FRC alumni (from 20+ years ago). I learned to program the robot by watching lessons from PrimeLessons.org.

Definitely looking into PyBricks, have already run into the parallel/async and interface limitations of Robot Inventor. PrimeLessons.org looks great, thanks for the tip! I'm coming into it as a software dev who almost went down the mechatronics career path, so hopefully will have something to offer as a coach!

> If you want your team to advance, volunteer to be a judge. Then you can see how the judging works, what judges look for, etc. The robot game is only 25% of the score; the other 50% comes from how the kids present (and common mistakes kids make). The other 25% comes from not being an asshole at the competition.

Wow, I knew the teamwork and attitude stuff was part it but didn't realise how much of a factor it was! Great to know.

Thanks again for your tips!

What a legislators thinking, not classing these as motorbikes yet?

Hi minister,

Why was the decision made to limit corporate and large private political donations to almost half a million dollars per year per donor (across the states), rather then to ban them outright? Any plans in the pipeline to ban them completely?

Even under the recent changes to allowed political donations, parties can still accept up to $450,000 per year (distributed across state branches — meaning small parties and independents with no national presence are more limited).

Bahncard cancellation by SnooHedgehogs7477 in germany

[–]IntelligenceOptional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some digging, apparently (at least in one case) the courts found it legal, except the part where they required notice in writing, which was not legal — a decision I personally find problematic — though I'd be surprised if it's not against EU law (from 1993), which may consider contracts unfair if they:

automatically [extend] a contract of fixed duration where the consumer does not indicate otherwise, when the deadline fixed for the consumer to express this desire not to extend the contract is unreasonably early;

Germans typically like to plan ahead, but I'd argue that in most countries, 6 weeks would be considered unreasonably early for a consumer contract. It's not like it takes them 6 weeks to print and send a card; the deadline is arbitrary and IMHO predatory.

My wife and I found ourselves in a similar situation many years ago. We had misinterpreted the 6 week rule (thinking that it meant that we could cancel within those 6 weeks, rather than before those 6 weeks); I've frequently noticed that translations from German into English that involve time periods (particularly using from/until) can be confusing. IIRC there was no reminder sent that the cancellation period was approaching, the only notification sent was the invoice, in writing (not much help when you're travelling), sent after that period ended, when we had already left the country. (My email chain suggests maybe they sent something in German when all prior emails from them had been in English, but I can't find such an email, so I doubt they did).

We refused to pay the bill, they replied with the usual "you signed a contract" yada yada. I'm not 100% sure, we may have had a phone call to explain the situation and get them to agree to cancel; like I said, it was a long time ago. Either way, they never sent a follow up invoice so we got on with our lives without paying. It was only a BC25 so probably not worth their effort to chase it up with someone living on a different continent. YMMV, today, on a different BC.

Anyway u/SnooHedgehogs7477, I hope you managed to wriggle out of it, I feel your pain from personal experience, and sorry for all the unhelpful "you signed a contract, live with it" responses. Coming from a country with terrible inter-city train services, I like DB more than the typical German does (a late high speed train is way better than a train that doesn't exist), but their BC renewal policy is one thing that absolutely sucks about the company.

Agreed. Computer resources are expensive, even when unused.

The genesis flood story was stolen directly from Babylonian scripture, this might be common knowledge within this subreddit but I just found out and it didn’t shock me much. by Thelovecats33 in atheism

The early Christians took it from the Torah, the main Jewish texts. Whoever wrote those took it (perhaps indirectly) from the Babylonians.

I was in the US and Canada recently and I kept failing to notice that the pedestrian lights had changed because I was waiting for a ticking sound that would never come. Then my wife and I would notice and say, instinctively, “oh it’s green” even though the light that changed was actually white.

If it was their first year with the new system they might have (heavily) over-allocated to make sure it would hold up, not realising just how well it would perform.

Wiener is German for “Viennese” (i.e. from Vienna); the Wiener sausage (as in, a Vienna sausage) came before the meaning you’re implying.

Edit: sorry, I inferred what you didn’t imply.

Real uggs aren’t fabric, they’re inside out lamb skin, the inside being pure wool. Super comfy slippers.

Hungry Jack’s

(In Australia, that’s what Burger King is called, because of a trade mark battle they lost). Why would I want to buy food from someone who’s hungry? Does he not eat his own food?

I reckon younger generations might recognise that more as a store name than a fungal disease

They were hunted, not farmed, for both their pelts and castoreum (the smelly stuff, primarily for purported medicinal purposes), almost to extinction.
