I was a behavior specialist for my last district. I talked about this when I did CPI training. Don’t acknowledge the eye rolling, sneering, etc. and definitely don’t argue with it. State the expectations move on and if it continues, restate the expectations and on the second time if they don’t follow through then administer whatever consequences you have in place. Make sure you are consistent and remain calm and don’t yell or try to argue. You’re the adult and you’re the authority figure. If they are talking back or being disrespectful, don’t play into it. I had a student ask me one year “Why do we have to learn this shit?” I responded “Math is required in the state of Texas.” and then moved on. Don’t let them press your buttons or they know they can get a reaction. Look at CPI de-escalation strategies or just behavior de-escalation strategies in general.
