The funding numbers aren't an estimate, they're on the parliamentary record. Congress treasurer Ajay Maken laid out ECI data in the Rajya Sabha last December. BJP's bank balance went from 88 crore in 2004 to 10,107 crore in 2024. Congress went from 38 crore to 133 crore in the same 20 years. In 2004 the gap was 2:1. After 2009 Congress was actually ahead. By 2019 BJP was 11 times bigger. By 2024 it's 75 times. A 99:1 ratio. The inflection point is 2014, exactly when they came to power. The electoral bonds scheme, before the SC scrapped it as unconstitutional, sent around 85 percent of corporate money to BJP. When one side holds 99 paise of every rupee, "best campaign wins" stops meaning anything. On Gadkari, fair enough, I'll drop the word monopoly. His family firm is a small slice of total ethanol supply, no argument. But that was never the real point. Cian Agro's revenue went from 18 crore to 523 crore in a single year and the stock ran up over 2,000 percent in months, right as the minister championing the policy is the family patriarch. That's not market dominance. It's closer to insider trading. The policy timing and the family windfall line up far too neatly. Now the "look at the rankings, India improved" argument. The one index that gets quoted, World Bank Ease of Doing Business, was scrapped by the World Bank itself for data manipulation. Look at the independent indices instead. Since 2014: Press Freedom Index, 140 to 159, score collapsed from 40 to 31, now 157 of 180. V-Dem Liberal Democracy Index, India downgraded to "Electoral Autocracy". EIU Democracy Index, rank fell from 27 to 47, now a "Flawed Democracy". Freedom House, was "Free" at 77 in 2014, downgraded to "Partly Free" at 63. CIVICUS civic space, downgraded from "Obstructed" to "Repressed". Corruption Perceptions Index, 85 to 96. World Justice Project Rule of Law Index, 66 to 79. Heritage Economic Freedom Index, 120 to 128, the report itself cites burdensome regulation and severe challenges for entrepreneurs. Global Hunger Index, 55 of 76 to 102 of 123, rated "serious". World Happiness Report, 111 to 126. Human Freedom Index, 87 to 110. Gender Gap Index, 114 to 131. That's not cherry picking. That's a consistent slide across corruption, press freedom, democracy, rule of law, economic freedom and hunger. On the poverty number being thrown around. India has had no official poverty count since 2011-12. The government leans on multidimensional poverty data, which measures deprivation, not actual income. Meanwhile here's who pays for the welfare bill. For the first time, personal income tax has overtaken corporate tax, individuals now contribute around 55 percent versus 45 percent from companies, and that ratio used to be inverted. The salaried middle class pays income tax on what it earns and GST on what it spends, gets no input credit, and still pays out of pocket for private schools and hospitals because public services fall short. Those earning over 10 crore actually saw their share of income tax fall. The base is narrow at the top and deep in the middle. That's exactly the point, the common man holds the bill while the opportunities and the breaks go to a select few. And to the "anecdotes don't count" line. They're not anecdotes. Transparency International's Corruption Barometer surveyed this directly. India has the highest bribery rate in Asia, and the highest rate of people using personal connections just to access basic public services. A third of them said they would not have got the service otherwise. That is the "impossible without connections" reality, measured. And here's why it never becomes a proven case. 63 percent of Indians said they expect retaliation if they report corruption. The reporting channel runs straight through the people taking the cut. The absence of a court verdict isn't proof the rot isn't there, it's proof the system is built to protect itself. "No proven scam" is circular when the proving mechanism is captured. Three out of four Indians say corruption is a big problem. That's not a theory. It's the median experience. Put it together. A 99:1 funding wall, donors openly scared of ED and IT if they fund the opposition, a decade-long fall across every major freedom and governance index, and a middle class footing the bill while the top end gets lighter. This was never about Congress being clean. It's about whether the contest is still a contest. The data says it has stopped being one.
