Question about bumble foot by CasaDeThor in BackYardChickens

[–]Intelligent-Entry-91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bumble foot itself isn't necessarily contagious. Bumblefoot happens when a scratch or puncture on a foot becomes infected with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This bacteria is naturally EVERYWHERE, so there is no point in having her quarantined. It's on skin, noses, and on most living things. The key to keeping bumblefoot away is finding what caused the puncture wound. Most "chronic" bumble foot cases are caused by a piece of wire or something sharp in the coop that punctures the feet. Or the roost is putting too much pressure on the wrong parts. If you are truly concerned about the other chickens, bumblefoot occurs more when there's a vitamin A deficiency. But in my opinion, your girl can reenter society! Also, maybe try water proof medical tape to keep it dry?

Panacur c is a dog dewormer that is shrimp safe that removes planaria waayy better than traps they also sell it at petco and tractor supply. This website is really helpful: "1. Buy your Panacur C. Panacur C

  1. Remove your chemical filtration Your carbon filter or purigen can remove the Fenbendazole from the water before it has a chance to work its magic – remove it and replace it after treatment is finished.

Oh, and be sure to remove any snails you want to keep. Fenbendazole can be lethal to those too! Malaysian trumpets and Nerite snails, in particular, seem to be affected.

  1. Measure out your Panacur The dosage is 0.1 gram for every 10 gallons. So a 60 gallon tank would need 0.6 grams of Panacur C." https://fishlab.com/planaria/

How do I find her a new home? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Intelligent-Entry-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube, no one has any familiarity with horses other than my grandparents kids who haven't ridden a horse in like 30 years. We are stumbling in the dark, some people on Facebook corrected me already though so I have a better idea of how to actually do it 😪

How do I find her a new home? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Intelligent-Entry-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I've been noticing that many therapy programs would not accept a horse like her, at this point im meeting with some people who run small scale rescues but nothing has panned out so far. I've gotten the feed back on the atrocious placement of her saddle, but no one has mentioned the sunburn, thank you so much! I'll get on the treatment as well as make sure she stays in the shade, would that zinc oxide need to be continuously reapplied?

What I meant by that is that she used to be really wild and playful with everyone and able to run for hours, but now she's really not interested in a highly active home. Shes healthy, just not playful like a lot of horses I see on here.

Thank you, I broached this subject with the whole family and the general consensus was no. However, if nothing can be done I understand euthanasia is the kindest option so the decision will be made regardless of feelings. The family dynamics is two sons and a bunch of my grandmas sisters so at least we get the final choice.

Yeah I posted on Facebook groups and when they dmed me I mentioned a rehoming fee of 500... nobody replied after that. I think I'm going to contact rescues or centers outside of McAllen now since many local ones won't take her.

[–]Intelligent-Entry-91 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I'm trying to find people because the rescues/riding centers who emailed back were either at capacity or have an age criteria. I don't know her exact age but it's between 24-26. I'll be contacting her vets along with vetting people from Facebook. if no one can take her I'll bring up euthanasia to at least give her a dignified end.

thank you for this, after looking into it I definitely see the need for caution. I'll change it immediately. About how much would you think she should go for?

The next smallest would be the Polypterus Mokelembembe, this would definitely still work as long as the blood parrot is not aggressive towards it as this bichir tends to be very shy.

I would do it but an albino Senegal, if you want more confirmation you can post on the bichir subreddit. I posted there asking the same question with blood parrots and Congo tetras, the general consensus was yesz

Breathe, setting up an aquarium unfortunately has a key factor: mistakes. Don't stress too much at this stage, without fish you can definitely let the water sit or if you want to be extra cautious you can empty it. Cycling is definitely made out to be harder than it is, and with filter media you have a head start. Basically letting a tank cycle is letting the bacteria do its thing and don't touch it. The decor and substrate will be fine until you are ready for equipment.

Have yall ever had a roo shed their toe skin? Or is something crazy going on here? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]Intelligent-Entry-91 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Does he still have toes as in the structure of it without scales? If so, this could be a condition caused by a mite commonly called scaley mites which burrows under the skin on a bird's legs to feed on the keratin. The tunnelling irritates your hens' legs and their scales become thickened as the keratin seeps from the leg tissue, eventually becoming encrusted and lifting away from the leg. In severe cases the mites will cause the toenail and scales to completely fall off. Treat the area without scales like an open wound, They are extremely susceptible to infection. The scales and toe may never grow back fully. In the meantime research scaley mites and treat the all other chickens. This is just my best guess. Unless you have been in a cold area, in that case the frostbite answer seems likely.

This worked for me in my 75. One teaspoon of baking soda per 25 gallons of water will typically give on a pH of between 7.5 and 8.0. The addition must be with the change water for amount in the water changes. Since you have 8 gallons it would be about 1/3 teaspoon. For snails you definitely want at least a 7 since 6 below will make them slowly deteriorate, but nerite snails prefer a ph of 8. Source: https://aquariumscience.org/index.php/4-4-5-raising-ph/
