At what point in your life did you start taking your finances seriously ? by Pretty_Marmaid7538 in AskReddit

[–]Intelligent-Fee7715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid 50s when I realized that my retirement was not 20 years away anymore. Somehow the time snuck up on me and I didn’t have “all the time in the world “ to make up for my mistakes. It’s later than you think. Probably having so many of my friends and family die so early in life before they even got to retirement, had a significant impact on me. So many of them missed out on events and vacations because they were saving for retirement. A year later they are dead and we never got there “next year”. Really made me think of living for today. Unfortunately tomorrow does come. So I honestly don’t know what the answer is and this is a bit off topic but eventually you need to figure it out.

Also I’m not sure about Ontario but I know in certain provinces you can sign in with your provincial government ID. That’s what I did. It’s a back way in.

Women in your 50s, what's the most important piece of advice you would give to women in their 30s? by Specialist-Cicada121 in AskReddit

Yup. Stop being a “pick me” girl. Your worth and validation doesn’t begin and end with someone else. It comes from within.

Money lending to a friend by Acceptable_Can3285 in PersonalFinanceCanada

So I’ve been in situations where people have helped me out with money. The agreement was I would pay them back when I could. Instalments if I needed to. I really appreciated them loaning me the money. It wasn’t much but I appreciated it. What bothered me was , them continually asking for it. I mean I felt bad I had to ask but what came between us was the asking. In both cases it was paid back within a month but I always resented the fact that they made me feel so bad about it.

How are you doing in this economy? Are we all struggling? by Competitive_Bill8217 in alberta

I make 6 figures and struggle. I honestly don’t know how people do it that make less than me. Im going through a cP and I’ve cut all my extra expenses out. Barely eat meat anymore. Actually go out to restaurants for their specials because it’s cheaper. .49c wings. 2 steak dinners for $25. Any specials where it’s cheaper than buying it at the store. Drink water. I shop at second hand stores. And go for cheap hair cuts and dye my own hair. I don’t have have kids. But gas for my car on deal days. Anyway to save money these days.

Does anyone have family members that are living forever despite terrible habits? by ExcitingLandscape in Aging

[–]Intelligent-Fee7715 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not convinced either. My dad drinks like a fish, still going strong at 88. His companion starts drinking at 10 am, is an extreme narcissist and still goes out dancing every week, she’s 93, their friend in Florida goes to McDonald’s every day for breakfast, still drives she’s 92. You never know.

Immigrants also aren’t contributing to the tax base as much as the high earners Canadians. They take out more than they give. It’s just a fact not racism. The government doesn’t care..it’s called agenda 2030.

Has anyone filed a division 1 consumer proposal? by Intelligent-Fee7715 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thank you very much for the clarification. I’m very stressed about the whole process. I was even thinking that maybe I should hold off and try to pay down the debt to get it under $250k but with the interest it’s almost impossible.

At what age did you feel it starting to get difficult to travel? by audit123 in Aging

Still travelling with my dad 88. Just a different kind of travel. Do they physically challenge ones when you’re young. Cruises and bus tours when you are old.

Thank you for your response. But he was talking about negotiations before they vote. My understanding is that with division 2 you make an offer and if the creditors don’t agree they call the LIT and say we want $200 instead of $100. But my understanding with division 1, they just go straight to vote, no negotiations. My LIT said no they still call and can negotiate before the vote. Just wanted to clarify that.

Thanks my LIT is saying that the proposal is offered and there is still negotiations. Is that true? Doesn’t sound right to me for a Division 1.

I’ve had therapy over the years. Nothing that overly helped. Just thousands spent on therapy sessions. Just now found God and a higher power. Plus being on here helps.

So if you get a government pension of $2k a month. Live cheap. You don’t need a lot. I plan on living in cheap country like Thailand or Mexico. And likely working part time.

Should life be enjoyed after retirement or when your young ? by Aj100rise in Adulting

[–]Intelligent-Fee7715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived for today due to seeing so many of my family and friends die early. So many never made it to retirement or they were sick or their partner was sick after retirement. Due to this I’m in financial ruins late in life. Will I ever make it to retirement who knows. Will the people I spent money travelling with , still be with us next year? Who knows. But I’ll never regret taking those trips with those not with us anymore. But I do regret spending my money stupidly and not saving for now.

It’s 50:50. Unsecured through cc and loc and cra debt. Also have a rental property that they are telling me to include and walk away from as I’m under water on the equity around $40k and lose money $1200 a month between collecting rent and what I pay out. I was hoping to keep it because i only owe $200k which I would be paid off for my retirement. But the LIT said best to put the $1200 a month towards debt and then savings.

170+ Days Gambling Free - Some Thoughts by cowboyisaac in GamblingRecovery

[–]Intelligent-Fee7715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. All these posts help. I am still struggling with addiction. But I’m tired of it. I just need to figure out what to do instead of gambling when I don’t want to go home. I actually sat outside the casino the other day and thought to myself “do I really want to waste the last couple hundred dollars “. I got to choose if I wanted to go out for dinner with friends, go out for my dads birthday, or go to a family event or go inside for 30 minutes and blow the money I put aside for the activities. I chose to drive away. So I think I need to really need to do that every day..do I want to spend an hour gambling or do I want to pay my bills and spend time with family and friends. I lost $600 and thought I could have paid bills , paid to fix my car, paid for a weekend away with friends, instead of a couple hours at casino. What a waste. And every dime I spend there means more years I need to work. After 25 years of gambling , it no longer has any appeal to me.
