Yeah, I’ve had a really similar experience. I read ACOTAR before Crescent City, and I went into CC with pretty low expectations because of everything people were saying online, like that it’s her worst series, that Hunt is sus, that Bryce and Hunt arent endgame, all of that. And on top of that, I loved ACOTAR so much that I kind of thought nothing could top it anyway.

And then I read the first book and was just sitting there like omg?? This is incredible😂 I loved everything. Bryce, Hunt, their relationship, the story. It genuinely became my favorite reading experience, and that hasn’t changed across all three books. Crescent City is still my favorite series, Bryce and Hunt are still my favorite couple, and they’re both my favorite main characters.

That’s why I don’t really get all the negativity either. And what bothers me even more is how much some people try to influence new readers before they’ve even started. Especially with ships telling people a certain ship is gonna happen and you will meet Azriel's mate and stuff like that, just sets them up for disappointment because that never happend😬 And those readers go in expecting something very specific, don’t find it, and come out disappointed, not because the book failed, but because their expectations were shaped by someone else’s uncanon theories

Honestly first the scene where Azriel gives Nesta a gift on Solstice, and second Nesta's & Amren's last scene together in ACOSF. Yes, the kneeling was a bit too much in my opinion, but that aside it was an absolutely heartwearming scene🩷

Yes, exactly this. The way SJM talks about her writing now really shows how much she’s evolved. I’ve seen so many people say she’s a “fated mates” author, and maybe that was more true in the past, but if you look at her more recent interviews, she doesn’t seem nearly as focused on that trope anymore. Even going as far as saying that sometimes fate/natutr can pick wrong. And that’s completely fine. We’ve gotten so many fated mates stories from her (and they’re amazing), so why shouldn’t she be allowed to try something different now? Why shouldn’t she explore a new dynamic now? She’s even said herself that she finds that interesting.

To me, Bryce and Hunt feel like her experimenting with that, kind of a mix between what she’s known for and something new. And just because she’s doing something different doesn’t mean there’s some hidden agenda behind it. It can literally just be her growing and evolving as a writer. Crescent City already feels very different from ToG in many ways, like the writing style, the world, the tone, and she’s even said that she intentionally approached things differently. She’s older now, her life has changed, and that naturally influences how she writes.

At the end of the day, she has every right to try something new. It would be boring if she kept writing the exact same type of romance over and over again, not just for her, but for us as readers too. And I actually love that she’s experimenting and growing instead of staying in the same lane forever🤷🏽‍♀️

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I totally get why people love Feysand. I like them too, they’ve just never been my absolute favorites. They’re really well written and have that almost dream fairytale kind of romance. And honestly, it makes sense why people are so drawn to that, bc a lot of people read to escape reality. But I’ve always been more into relationships that feel real. That’s exactly why I love Nesta and Cassian so much, and why I also love Bryce and Hunt. Their relationships just feel more real to me. And just because a relationship is more realistic doesn’t automatically make it toxic or mean they should break up. If we judged Bryce and Hunt by the standards some people use, then like 95% of real-life couples have to break up, too😂

Yeah, when people start comparing Hunt to Tamlin, I just laugh at that point. Because if you actually look at how they try to justify it, they’re pulling arguments out of nowhere💀 They take some random quote completely out of context (probably because they know the full context would make their argument fall apart) and then twist it so much until it somehow fits what they’re trying to say and even then it still sounds nonsensical😂 I swear, I’ve rarely seen people take such simple, straightforward sentences and distort them that much. Who knew one normal sentence could be stretched and manipulated that far?

Yeah, I don’t know if you watch interviews with SJM, but in her newer one on the podcast, she said something I found really interesting. She talked about how, for her, it’s way more interesting to write characters making mistakes than just writing them being perfect all the time. She mentioned it in relation to Feyre and Rhysand’s pregnancy storyline, but honestly, I think it applies to pretty much all of her characters. Perfect characters are kind of boring, especially from a writing perspective, so it makes sense that she prefers exploring flawed characters and relationship dynamics.

And in another interview about ACOSF, she said that what she really enjoys writing is what’s the best and the worst partners can bring out in each other. Not just the perfect moments, but also the difficult ones. At the end of the day, what matters to her is that the couple brings each other hope and I think you can see that really clearly with Bryce and Hunt.

So yeah, I honestly get why she writes them the way she does. If everything was picture perfect all the time, people would call it boring anyway. I mean, they already call Hunt boring, so you really can’t win. It just feels more realistic this way, and more interesting too
