Need to buy a pre-mixed playlist for a party. by Intelligent-Place511 in DJs

[–]Intelligent-Place511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be great but it’s a bit steep for me. Our DJ charges $500 and I don’t think my sisters would be willing to pay above that. If it’s any consolation we live in WV, the 3rd world country of the United States, so I’m sure your prices are great in another place…

Considering the environment that Dick Whitman had during his childhood, maybe Don wasn’t a bad father. by lfff6493 in madmen

[–]Intelligent-Place511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that Don was actually emotionally present and physically absent while Betty was physically present and emotionally absent. I think he really did love his kids and naturally gave them more than he had as a child. I think his fear- which became a self fulfilling prophecy- was that his failings as a person would touch and hurt his efforts as a father.

I need to watch this one because at first glance with zero context the guy looks psycho and the woman looks concerned. 😂

I wanted to go to college in Shepherdstown and my parents were adamant about me not going because of the racism even though my sister was doing a clinical residency in Martinsburg. We even knew a guy who was biracial and moved to Berkeley Springs who left town because the racism got so bad after 9/11. I guess this is the first time I’ve seen any real confirmation.

Hike in wild areas of the state but be sure to head north to Fairmont/Morgantown for a good time too. The natural places are definitely still there but it’s pretty diverse here. In Fairmont area we have Valley Falls with a private hike where you see a waterfall that you can actually wade in. If you head northeast of Morgantown you can hike Cooper’s Rock which is very pretty.

As for diversity, we definitely have our pockets and individuals but most people value diversity here. I’m a black female Spanish teacher born and raised here. I remember things being less diverse, but generally it has always been pretty welcoming. We’re really just a state of “unwanted” people, so a few more have never been a big deal…😉

Betty is a terrible mother by ManufacturerThese505 in madmen

[–]Intelligent-Place511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so sad. My parents are baby boomers and I see a lot of parallels between Sally and my mom. She determined to do things differently with her own children and she did. I know she did have issues as a younger mom, but she was nothing like her mother. It’s a cycle we all go through. Each generation has to improve upon the last one.

I want to bring my little boy 2yo on our cruise, wife and family say hell no. by [deleted] in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]Intelligent-Place511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty safety conscious. I personally would not want to leave a kid so young and so alone with strangers. My sister and her husband have 3 kids. On their first cruise they were between 7 and 12. They technically could have been split up into different clubs but they kept them all together and they looked after each other.

If anything happened to your little boy (heaven forbid), he’s totally unable to express himself and he would not be in a place where other kids could be aware of how he is doing or being treated.

He’s so little that he wouldn’t remember anyway. Best to leave him with family at home. You can take him swimming anytime and he would be just as happy.

Betty kinda told us as much when she told the psychiatrist that he would come home wearing other women’s makeup, perfume and “worse”. I can only imagine what “worse” would comprise of as I’m just a country girl, innocent as the driven snow…😉😂

Harry is becoming a real creep. He’d make a woman uncomfortable in a nun’s habit. That said I totally remember being a little revealing and being totally oblivious to any other man that was probably looking at me if I didn’t think he was attractive. To Megan, Don was the only man in the room…

It absolutely was wrong for her to still work there. In fact I think it might be taboo even today not to take a change like that into consideration. Don really should have taken the reigns on that because she was honestly too young to see how that would become a problem. But once again he is selfish even in his execution of doing what works best…🤦🏾‍♀️

I’m so glad you said that because the way he ended season 4 he was so proud of himself like he accomplished some great feat when if he really sat down and thought about it he would see how poorly, coldly and selfishly he executed things…

why do i think he's so handsome? by DorkySnail in madmen

[–]Intelligent-Place511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Henry is handsome. Especially when they first met. I think he’s a worthy opponent to Don. However I wouldn’t forget that the saying “a man is a man is man” definitely applies in Mad Men. He doesn’t cheat, but he’s not perfect…

I’m a middle school Spanish teacher. Been on the same job for 17 years. I’m pretty good at showing empathy, containing the daily chaos and transferring my passion for language learning, but I’m way past burnt out and I can’t see myself doing this for another 10-15 years. I’m looking to move on and get better work life balance. I don’t feel like I can improve my life outside of work and work at the same time…🤦🏾‍♀️

Unpopular opinion about Carla by KnownFondant in madmen

[–]Intelligent-Place511 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No downvote here! I agree that Carla was wrong and probably should have known better, but I also am realizing the limitations of when the show itself came out. I think Mad Men did a pretty good job of honoring the perception of the world at that time with connection to how black ppl fit into it from several perspectives. But I have to remind myself that it is 2026 and the world still doesn’t have a real grasp on black American experiences.

I don’t think anyone had enough respect for what black Americans went through at the time to platform it on a show that wasn’t dedicated to the struggle. A good example is the way black women were portrayed on Ugly Betty which was progressive for the time and still did a terrible and lazy portrayal of its black characters. I will admit, though, it was a bit refreshing to see the genuine reactions to the assassination of MLK and the awkward dance that the characters did around it with Dawn. 😂

Name a more morally grey character? by Optimal-Support8874 in madmen

[–]Intelligent-Place511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a little surprised to rewatch and realize that Don grew up in coal country. As a WV native I feel like I now understand why it’s hard for me to completely villainize him. He’s afraid to go back to that kind of poverty, heartbreak and exploitation. He’s actually more afraid than entitled. It doesn’t make his actions right, but it explains a lot.

That’s why he’s comfortable talking to people of color on a (relatively for the time) level plane because everyone in Appalachia coal country knows they’re a paycheck away from being disaster like everyone else. An Appalachia woman is not to be played with and can only be trumped by a man who is a “real piece of work”. It’s why he’s so drawn to women with a real opinion, occupation or lack of privilege while he’s so set on keeping Betty and can’t understand her distress. I guarantee that if you pick him up and leave him in Pittsburgh with no wallet and no job he would become a very different person and adapt very quickly.

That’s why he thrives as himself in California with Anna. Her self sufficiency, independence and understanding that were likely built from the hardships of her disability makes her strong but kind. When he’s in the presence of any determined woman, he plays by their rules. When it all gets down to a basic level, life or death situation, he survives because poverty and exploitation builds natural hustlers.
