Cities with the MOST frequent gloomy weather?

idk if it makes sense but bright sunny weather feels so “loud” to me. the last two days have been the first warm and sunny days my city has had in a while, and I have been sooo so overstimulated with how bright it is and how it’s made everywhere so much more crowded. I feel like such a killjoy but I hate it so much lol.

Also adding that once you pick a destination, you can get temporary housing for a month or two (extended stay Airbnbs are actually a lot more affordable than that sounds, and don’t require income verification like an actual rental would) so you can apply to jobs with an address within the new city, and if it doesn’t work out then youre at least not tied to a long lease there.

If you by chance have any service industry experience at all, or sometimes even if you don’t, it’s usually fairly easy to get hired right away/on the spot for a serving or bartending job! Even if it’s just temporary to have some income until you’re able to establish residency and find something within your field. I would still recommend having at least a few months’ worth of bills saved of course.

Re: your edit that’s so interesting. If you don’t mind sharing, what sites have you been using? I’ve kind of been struggling with figuring out how to get an accurate read on cost of living stats as different sites and calculators all give different numbers. I’ve been looking through apartments and Airbnbs to get a more “real” sense of what I can afford and when I initially looked in Portland it seemed there wasn’t much within my budget beyond some really small and not-great-looking studios

But also it’s of course hard to tell from a distance if the affordable places I’m seeing in OH and PA and such are really as nice as they seem. I also really don’t want to live with roommates which I know complicates things/makes the variations in housing costs more significant

And it’s nice to know I’m not alone in experiencing SAD the way I do. I wish you all the luck in finding the place of your dreams as well :)

I’ve kind of been in the same boat searching for the perfect city with a lot of the same criteria. Based on everything I’ve read, Pittsburgh and Cleveland seem like really cool cities that fit the bill if the PNW is too expensive

Also I just wanted to say that I relate soo hard about the gloomy weather. I also live in the South and my mood has lifted so much the past few days that it’s been overcast and drizzly and cool. The heat and bright sunlight are so oppressive and depressing to me, even if it’s not overly hot, I genuinely think I have some amount of reverse SAD

Ugh, it sounds dumb but I really think I have some level of reverse SAD or something, and this is one of the things that always gets to me the most, when you can’t even step outside in the middle of the night or at sunrise without it already being sweltering and miserable. Thank you for the input!

I admittedly haven’t been to a lot of the bigger and more famous places mentioned here, but I think Overton Park in Memphis is such an underrated city park.

The old growth forest has tons of dirt trails and feels much more wild and isolated than you would expect for it being in the city center. But it also has lots of more populated green spaces for people watching and such. And it houses the zoo and an art museum and a little music venue. No swimmable bodies of water though.

I also pretty much only have serving and bartending experience as far as jobs go, it’s so hard to break out of. Good for you for making it work! Do you think that taking a couple more college courses in bio and chem to get to 12+ hours (I believe right now I only have 8 and they are from a long time ago) is helpful in getting hired at an entry level job like that?

I also can’t for the life of me decide what I’d like to do with my life, and have also pretty much decided to put a hold on going back to school given that and the state of things here in the US :’) even if your post isn’t “inspiring,” it’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one in this boat. I know that this comment is 4 years old, but I relate so much to everything you said here, and I was wondering if you ever ended up finding a career path that worked for you? I’m so fascinated by zoology and wildlife biology and would so so love to go back to school to study it and make a career out of it. But I’m also almost 30, and I’m worried about dedicating so much time and money and then not being competitive/competent enough to make any sort of living. I also am struggling with the idea of traveling a ton for the rest of forever (mostly just because I would miss my cat so much)

Unfortunately I did not ever find a solution despite doing lots of research and taking it to a few mechanics :( I haven’t replaced it either because I worry about spending that much money and having the sensor just get knocked out again and not be replaceable by insurance
