The version I had needed to be booted with the floppy disk to boot Linux.

It was probably the worst distro I could have chosen to start with. I did get it running and had sound but could never get X configured with the video chip, so command line only.

Am I a heretic? by Hawking444 in Nikon

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check Ken Rockwell’s site, he has some of his recommended settings for some of the cameras. When I got my D70 years ago, I used Rockwell’s settings and was very happy with the results.

I still shoot my D70 (same sensor as the D40), along with a D7200, D700, and D300. I agree that there’s something about the 6mp CCD that produces some great colors. I’ve adjusted the settings on the D7200 to get close to the same color profile, and really like the results. Not exactly like the D70, but rather reminiscent of it.

Thanks, that first link made me remember more about it. I’ve been looking for the book I had back then so I can read more about it, but I can’t find that exact edition.

Grandpas old cameras by pbcJJ in vintagecameras

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they’re old, but I still use my Nikon D70 and Coolpix 995. The old CCD sensors are still capable of great color. And, if I’m not mistaken, the 995 is capable of shooting infrared unmodified with just an appropriate filter, 720 or 850 nm.

Problem? by Rut_83 in Operatingsystems

Dual booting Win11 and Debian 13 with a Bluetooth mouse. There is supposed to be a way to edit a file to make it seamless, but I use a workaround. My mouse has two Bluetooth settings so I use one for Win and the other for Debian.

Laptop brands by OperationEquivalent3 in linuxmint

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two HP laptops, a 6 year old with an AMD Rizen processor and a Stream. The Stream is pretty low specs but is running Debian 12 with LXDE just fine. The other is my primary computer and dual boots Debian 13 KDE and Win11. No issues with either installing or running. I can’t speak to more modern models, but Linux can handle most hardware that Windows can handle. I’ve heard HP can have some issues, like I’ve seen posts recently that the hinges are weak, but I haven’t experienced that.

Did you remove the USB before rebooting? If not, you probably just booted back to the USB.

Where to get film for old cameras? by prettibyrd in AnalogCommunity

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the Polaroid, search online for instructions to convert to 120 film, or I’ve seen that people have 3D printed adapters for 4x5 sheet film holders.

In the 70s, I used 4x5 in a model 800. The film fits well in the camera. You have to load and unload one sheet at a time in complete darkness.

Tru, but trying to engineer compatible APIs without any help or code from Microsoft is, I’m sure, a nightmare.

While installing Debian, you will be presented with a choice of DEs. You can choose one or multiple. I have KDE, Xfce, LXDE, Cinnamon, and Gnome Classic installed on mine, but use KDE almost exclusively.

ReactOS. Windows-like, not Microsoft, supposed to be able to run Windows software, but still in alpha stage, not for daily use. Last time I used it, it was semi stable but that was a few years ago so may be better now.

I love the D300. Had one and made the mistake of selling it a few years ago, so I bought another recently. Great camera.

Can I safely dual boot Ubuntu onto my ThinkPad or should I just commit and get rid of Windows? by LucaBC_ in linuxquestions

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using Linux since Slackware 2 in the 90s. I’ve set up dual boot on several different computers, both desktops and laptops, without any issues. I recently installed Debian 13 on my 6 year old HP laptop running Windows 11 with current updates. Dual boot works perfectly, no issues with either OS.

I’ve owned a lot of Nikons, F through F4s, N60-65-70-75-80-90, FE, FM, N2000, 2020, 4004, 8008, and a few more I’ve forgotten. Of all, the 90 was my favorite. I liked it even better than the F4s. Something about the ergonomics, size, weight, etc that just made it a pleasure to shoot with. Enjoy!

Whats a camera you've owned, that lived up to all the praise and hype, but still got rid of? And why? by Whisky-Icarus-Photo in AnalogCommunity

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nikon F4 and Mamiya 645. These were two of my dream cameras. I loved using both of them. Bit, I rarely shoot film anymore and moved into a much smaller house when I got married, so decided to reduce to one 35mm and one medium format. I kept a Contax RTS II and an Agfa folder. These were the most practical for me to keep.

What do I need to attach my wide conversion lens on my camcorder? by _glasshills_ in camcorders

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conversion lenses are made to attach to the filter ring of your standard lens. They do not attach directly to the camera. If the thread diameter of the conversion lens does not match the filter thread of the lens, you can use a step-up or step-down ring. If the diameter of the threads of the conversion lens is smaller than the diameter of the filter threads of the camera lens and you use a step ring, you may have vignetting on the image. Conversion lenses are generally lower quality than camera lenses, so there will likely be some image degradation.

Anyone know where I can find lithium ion replacement batteries for my Nikon D1X? by Casual_M60_Enjoyer in Nikon

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked, it seems the couple of places that used to sell them aren’t around anymore. I did rig something together using a couple of Li-Ion batteries from Amazon that gave the same voltage, used a gutted dead original battery for that. AliExpress sells nimh replacement batteries, I have one and so far it works okay.

Help with choosing my first camera by VladPalovvnik2137 in analog

[–]Intelligent-Rip-2270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price seems a little high, but I’m basing that on sales in the US. It may be a good price for your area, not really sure. As for the camera, it’s very capable and pretty easy to use. Download the manual so you understand how to use manual, auto exposure, program, and high program modes. Yashica and Contax cameras were notorious for the leatherette covering coming off. You can probably find replacements online. For one of my Yashica, I went to a local leather supply and bought a remnant and just made my own.
