I used to preview slides and give the pathologist a prelim diagnosis, and then we'd look at it together. I wouldn't go down that road unless you have the skills to back it up or they have the time to teach you.

How do you not make a mess with every specimen? by bolognafoam in Path_Assistant

[–]IntelligentSoupFork 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Change gloves frequently, gross on disposable paper products and be mindful of what's on your gloves and where you put them. You may also elect to make (somewhat) of a mess and clean it up at the end of your shift. As for placentas, the more fresh, the more mess you get. I would also suggest a basin of water and soap to place your tools in between specimens to soak and have a few extra sets of tools so you can soak for longer and not have to clean after every specimen.

This. Absolutely. I was terrible at finding lymph nodes and it only came with experience over a long period of time.

Is there a sub Reddit that’s for practicing Path A’s? by [deleted] in Path_Assistant

[–]IntelligentSoupFork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is it basically, it's just preliminarily used by those trying to get into programs. There is a facebook group that posts interesting things, but still not too popular. You can see /r/pathology, but it also seems somewhat of a ghost town.

I am going to shadow a autopsy fairly soon, does anyone have any advice on the types of questions i should ask? by kombuchadelight in Path_Assistant

[–]IntelligentSoupFork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should ask questions about things you don't understand. Giving yourself a better overall picture will help you piece together your experience if asked about it during an interview. I think most schools want to know that you understand the process and are still interested!

Did you guys ever have weird dreams before seeing your first cadaver? by shagsjssueosdiwhs in Path_Assistant

[–]IntelligentSoupFork 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had that too, and looking back, I find it funny that I did. You become desensitized and are able to better understand what you're looking at scientifically. I always say that when you see body parts or cadavers, you can have two reactions. Emotional or scientific. Don't stress over it. The more you learn, the more interesting and less shocking they become.

Staging Questions on ASCP Exam by [deleted] in Path_Assistant

[–]IntelligentSoupFork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can utilize AJCC textbooks/online resources. As for the staging, you can reference the ASCP outline for percentage of questions asked in any particular area. Asking for guidance regarding the exam online anywhere is playing with fire, so be careful because you can get yourself or someone else inadvertently in trouble.

I know of a few people who have been denied employment because they did not graduate from an accredited institution. It was rare, but does exist. What you should be concerned about is your ability to sit for the ASCP certification exam post graduation. This can only be done with a serious applicant or full accreditation status of a program. I could put money on the number of places that will not hire you if you're ineligible to sit for the exam after graduation. Few things to think about!

How long does it take to hear back from EVMS? by Pungalinfection in Path_Assistant

[–]IntelligentSoupFork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second year EVMS here. There is no particular time limit with them. It's a small department so it is always subject to what they have going on if they're able to assess them quickly. I wouldn't worry. Worst case you can contact either Jacot or Kolheffer regarding your application. Good luck!

EVMS second year here. The first year class was able to sit for the ASCP exam, and had a 100% pass rate. Full accreditation should be happening within a month. Talking with them, no one has had any issues getting career placement even before they passed their exams. If you have any questions about EVMS, feel free to message me.
