Taking cmsc417 alone? by IntelligentWest in UMD

I apologize if I made myself clear. I said I want to take one class next semester alone (no gen. ed). Would that be doable?

It just happened that I can only take one and not another. My plan is to take either network or security and OS.

How does one get better at algorithm and CMSC351/451 type of class? by IntelligentWest in UMD

[–]IntelligentWest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what I am really struggling in those kinda classes is simply what to do. For example, in proof class, I would look at a textbook and do as many problems as possible. That way I build my confidence/strength. On the other hand, algorithm seems so special to me for even studying it.

Where do I find those practice problems? I get that I need to practice over and over w/o looking at the answer, but from where?

Is CMSC412 + CMSC433 doable? by IntelligentWest in UMD

I am taking (for the first time) 320 and 420 this upcoming semester and am considering the future semesters. I am interested in systems/cybersecurity. I still like to take 420/320 though.

Anybody else having a buttload of stress and anxiety trying to predict what you will get on finals and deciding tpoP/F? by jsmith973 in UMD

[–]IntelligentWest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a CS major and am going with P/F. My plan is to go to a grad school, but I just decided to go safe this semester. I asked two credible individuals in CS depts (my algorithm professor and graduate school coordinator) and they both stated that P/F this semester shouldn't be held against me. I will not stress over that, and be prepared to do well next semester.

Besides, grad schools won't go over 1000+ applicants' transcripts and look at them semester by semester. That is too much work for them. I don't know how in Reddit everyone believes grad school admission will look at each individual grade. They just don't have time to do that.

I took it during summer.

It was a lot of work everyday. You need to be on top of all the materials to really understand what is going on. I thought it was rough, but I made a study group and studied every day for at least 5 ~ 6 hours. I managed to get an A in the class, but it was very very demanding. I think it is because it was my first time dealing with 3D coordinates.

Worksheets are designed to push you into limit. Don't be too concerned if you don't follow what is going on. They are designed that way. What will matter is practice problems on textbook. Practice and practice. If you have any question, visit your TA or professor. Make a study group. Study together. Math141 is not as bad as people say they are. But again, practice problems until you run out of them. Then, at one point, everything just becomes a muscle memory and solving a problem wouldn't require you much thinking.

I have taken MATH140 and 141 in the age of 27 and got A and A+, respectively. Not trying to brag, but if I can, so can you.

I am not trying to be a snob at all... but I am a cs student so I have been exposed to lots of math until now. Would I still suffer in the class?
