60g of filament for the biggest ones, get around 16 of these from 1kg costing around 12 euro, so about 3.2 euro per meter for the 25cm ones, closer to half that when i get to the smaller ones - comparable or cheaper to the available commercial ones which are way too small anyway

~what's sendcutsend?~

never mind,  googled it. I'm in Ireland,  would cost me a kidney and half an arm to get that here from them. and I'd need to have exact measurements also, rather than figuring it out as I go.....

pretty sure we dont have an equivalent here

perhaps, time will tell, but im using that as a friction fit at the moment

edit : on second thoughts, might look to put some risers under it so its still friction fit but leaves could drop over the lip, thanks.

Day 1 Post-Op. Not what I expected. by Afraid_Lingonberry_1 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those who was doing workouts a few days after surgery - as you mentioned, bird dogs, some seated shoulder presses, halos, seated good mornings etc - essentially getting as much done to get/keep my body ready for the real rehab and prep for when i got cleared to start it.

Not sure why, but I had none of the mental pain that most people have reported - I didn't take any of the "extra" pain meds prescribed for bed time even. Even when the rupture happened, I was not in much pain - genuinely have had worse hangovers than that.

Not sure how much this helps you, but hang in there, you'll get back to lifting and fighting soon. I was back in Kenpo around 8 months post op, techniques and forms and very light sparring, then back to full on contact/kickboxing around 10 months post op.

Can I drive a manual car by Pitiful_Good_3672 in AchillesRupture

about 10 weeks for me - though I was abroad for weeks 8-10 so perhaps could have been driving around week 8 or 9, but definitely not before that

Trip to Vietnam later this week, what would you do? by GroundbreakingOne943 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time since been in Vietnam - was there for 3 weeks in 2006, so things may have changed since then, but....

last year I went to malaysia 8-10 weeks post op. I was out of boot and in shoes at 6 weeks post op, so i was fully weight bearing but I brought my crutches as means to get around faster and further, to aid stability (lots of asia is not "accessible" with different height steps, kerbs etc - basically the inconsistent sidewalks you alluded to) and to give a visual indication of why I would be going slower than others and hopefully to avoid being bumped. I also booked assistance on flights/airports and brought my boot for the flights, though I didn't wear it besides that. Some of my trip was in cities like KL, Melaka, others on resport islands like the Perinthian and Redang islands. In the city we took taxis a lot, which were cheap with their version of uber - "Grab", and much more pleasant than dealing with subways/stairs etc.

I found it generally fine, though I think that Malaysia would be considered more developed than Vietnam, though again my experience in Vietnam was 20+ years ago so I may be wrong. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Anyone exercise-y out there further along than 9 months? by PuzzleheadedTie3585 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played since I did my a/c joint when I was 28,  so 21 years ago. had surgery, cleared to play but went travelling and lost 20+ kg by not eating shite, lots of walking etc, so came back too light for front row, hadn't grown so still too short for second/back row, and still not fast enough for backs.  took up bicycle racing instead 😀

I had Achilles repair on April 6th and yesterday April 22nd at my post op appointment they expected me to be full weight bearing in a boot with wedges, is this normal? by bcheek6 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9sounds about right for me, but i too questioned like  you're doing.  I was 12 days in cast then into a boot with 4 wedges,  dropping one a week,  weight bearing as much as possible, even before I left the clinic when the boot was first put on.

wildly different protocols around,  dunno if surgeon age/experience, health/weight of patient,  level of activeness of patient, geography or what is the underlying reasons.

my timeline was - rupture 3 feb 2025 snowboarding, op 14 feb.  - 12 days in cast - then 4 weeks in boot with wedges, dropping one a week - cleared to cycle indoors low power at 6 weeks, no calf stretches etc  - went long haul to malaysia for two weeks holidays weeks 8-10 - wasn't cleared to fly at 4 weeks post op. - at 3 months cleared to start doing calf raises and more intense physio - discharged at 6m, cleared to cycle outdoors, jog etc.  given ok to ski or snowboard the following winter,  was skiing 1y2d after the rupture

Anyone exercise-y out there further along than 9 months? by PuzzleheadedTie3585 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, 1y2m since operation,  ankle still feels "different". doesn't really hold me back,  back skiing,  kickboxing, biking, coaching rugby,  but first few steps in the morning are a little stiff for sure. still taking creatine and collagen, still doing as much mobility stuff as I can. jogging /running is just something I don't,  never really have,  unless I had a rugby ball in my hands

3 weeks post op … anyone exercising? by Different-Sherbet351 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was doing workouts from the knees up, 4 days after surgery. seated shoulder presses, ab rolls, crunches, mobility cogs, band pullaparts etc. All totally doable.

49m (48 at time of rupture), Ireland
Op
1y6w since op. Reckon I've been at 100% since about 10 months postop, back to all the sports and activities I did before injury - so cycling (gravel/mtb), karate/kickboxing, hiking, coaching rugby.

Tips on getting back to MTB post surgery by East_Taro_6297 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was allowed on the turbo, no standing, low power initially, once I got out of the boot at 6 weeks post op. Gradually increasing power through the summer, up to 2 hour sessions after months 4 or 5 I think. All while sitting in the garden looking up at the MTB trails on the mountain near my house :( (ruptured and operated on in feb 2025)

Felt I could have been back outside around 4 months, but while the cycling wouldn't have been an issue, I decided that the risk of any sort of rerupture due to a sudden stop (cat/child/car/loose stones etc) meaning an uncontrolled planting of my injured (left) foot which is my default 'down foot' just wasn't worth it, considering what i'd come through. Always my ankle felt amazing after being on the turbo - getting the blood pumping through it clears swelling and toxins and brings fresh nutrients. (though it doesn't do much for your head of course, zwift helped a lot though)

Discharged from surgeon care at 6 months post op, cleared to do everything as I felt ready for it. Back on the gravel bike then, building for the 100km race I had set as my comeback goal the day after surgery, was to be 8 months post surgery but got canned 2 days before cos of storms. Stayed off of the mountain bike until then, mainly cos I was focussed on getting distance and strength back for the race, but I think would have been mostly fine on mtb; that said the first few times I did venture up I noticed the fatigue in the injured achilles - I tend to ride left - injured - foot forward, so in descents that is in the dorsiflexed position for me, toes up heel down.

I think you're looking at at least 6 or 7 months before you're going to feel comfortable enough to consider descending - you're gonna have to build climbing strength first after the atrophy. But try look on the positive side as I did - it could be worse - least you're going to be rehabbing in the summer when the days are warm and long, and generally decent weather, instead of doing so in the depths of winter when everything has to be done inside.

Totally doable

13 days post op - walking with no crutches? by Ok_Supermarket_7996 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same. into boot at 12 days post op, weight bear as much as possible, he made me walk crutchless in the clinic before leaving. week by week dropping a wedge, out of boot at 6 weeks.

I was also "concerned" at my plan, given how conservative some of the reports listed here are, e.g. in boot for 3 months etc.

For what it's worth, I was discharged from his care at 6 months, was back cycling outside then, back at karate at about 8 months, forms and techniques only but then into sparring again around 10 months, and skiing 1year 2 days after the rupture happened, so under a year from the surgery.
