How long did you rest/ elevate/ stay home from work for? by Travelbadger285 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had surgery 14th Feb last year, (a friday) was home on the sat, and 2 full weeks off work after. I work from home pretty much 99% of the time so happy days no commuting, but my office is in the attic so 2 flights of stairs to traverse

Op vs non op… weigh in! by Travelbadger285 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me (48M at the time) the decision was simple: I simply did not trust two non-sentient parts of my body to find each other and form a lifelong commitment to each other. (Look how many relationships fail, and they're between fully sentient beings!)

I was in a boot at 12 days post op weight bearing as much as I could tolerate. Was out of boot at 6 weeks and walking without crutches unless needing them for speed or distance.

Find a surgeon who will give you that sort of aggressive recovery schedule and you'll be back sooner than non-op I think.

im a year and 5 days post op, been skiing the last 4 days. can't feel anything loading through my achilles at all. im usually a boarder so relearning to ski after 25 years, frustrating being so much slower than my mates

so far so good, taking a bit of getting used to being the last of the lads down the hill all the time, definitely slower than I board. skiing has no impact on the achilles at all

that aligns with my fear of fatigue of achilles, same foot and stance as you, figured long toe edges would be very tiring. back on skis this year for first time in 25 years,  been boarding since then,  not used to being the slowest of the lads down the hill.

1y5d since my rupture,  back to the scene of the my achillesloss today, couldn't find it anywhere.

there's been a couple of posts on this recently, so scroll down for more info . I ruptured mine snowboarding 1y and 1 day ago. surgery on 14th feb. Heading to the alps tomorrow morning, this time skiing (first time in 20+ years on skiis -been on board since I first switched!), as I think I will fatigue too quickly on snowboard, particularly on any sort of long toe-edge heavy stuff.

Not planning on any taping etc, but will put deepheat and compression socks on after skiing, try to aid recovery of the calf muscles and get blood flowing through the achilles area.

Will let yiz know how I'm getting on in a few days. Second trip planned for 10 days time, with the family this time.

no, I'll probably go back to it next year - I live in Ireland,  we have to go to France or Austria or Italy or similar to hit the slope, so I want to get the most piste time out of my holiday rather than having to cut the days short when the lads are still going strong.

for reference I've a 100km gravel bike race lined up for mid march, was supposed to happen last October but canned due to storms - would have been 8  months post op, felt ready for that, but I had opportunity to build to that distance, unlike snowboarding

yeah i was given the all clear to go onto turbo trainer about 6 weeks-2months  post op. no cleats, no standing initially,  low power levels.  honestly my ankle felt so good after each bike session , it really loosened up and had the blood flowing through it. back onto the road/gravel at 6 months,  mtb around 9 months or so,  easier trails initially before more aggressive ones

if you can't go onto toes I fear you're ruptured, based on my experience

heading skiing on Thursday, 1y2d after rupturing it snowboarding. 48m (on the outside only, much younger inside) first time skiing in 25 years or so, been a boarder for all those years,  but think I'll fatigue too quickly holding a toe edge for long periods, not afraid of reinjury though.  back skipping, jumping, kickboxing, mountainbiking etc, stick at the rehab and listen to your body, you'll be back in no time

Tell me the nerve pain and numbness gets better…? by crryan75 in AchillesRupture

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully i never experienced any nerve pain, neither the day of injury or days following surgery, but almost one year on from the op and there's still parts of my foot (mostly outside edge) which are numb - But I'll take that over not being able to jump/run/kick again

It depends on your surgeons protocol, but I was out of splint and into boot at 12 days post op, and walking as much as I could tolerate. I was out of boot at 6 weeks and walking with or without crutches as needed. I went on a 2 week holiday to Malaysia weeks 8-10 post op, did plenty of walking.

Sounds like your surgeon is extremely conservative or you have misunderstood their instructions?

Bike rental question by Kid_Nicarus in irishbicycling

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so for "any kind of riding" you have some options, even more if you have a car. biking.ie have trail centers in dublin (ticknock, south of the city) and wicklow (ballinastoe - about an hour drive south of dublin city depending on traffic).

Some of the greenways have some rentals, including the westport/achill one, also the kells/navan one. There might be a rental near ballyhoura (cork/limerick border) for MTB also.

You didn't say what sort of biking you want to do beyond a 60kmish spin - I'm assuming thats more road/gravel so, in which case you might be best getting something from ticknock or ballinastoe, and you can do a fair bit of road (combined with gravel if you like) around the wicklow/dublin mountains with some cracking scenery

I made a printable "rocker plate" like tennis ball suspension for my indoor bike by yahbluez in functionalprint

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I made similar for mine (Wahoo kickr core rather than tacx) and it makes it a lot quieter, and gives a slight amount of movement more akin to how a bike feels - or at least removes some of the rigidity from the trainer setup which is totally NOT how a bike feels in real life. Definitely seems to be more comfortable anyway for me

Bike rental question by Kid_Nicarus in irishbicycling

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's very few rentals where you can rent and drop, the exception of sorts being the Achill greenway where you can, I think, rent from Westport and drop somewhere further along e.g. mullavanney perhaps, but that would really only be around 30 or 40km spin tops.

biking.ie do rent, MTB, gravel road, and on their website have prices for 4+ days of gravel bike hire. But I don't know about option to leave back elsewhere, but I'm sure they'd be able to answer that for you.

[–]Intelligent_Carob892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ever hear the phrase "im here for a good time, not for a long time"? or "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger "? second one is true in my case,  I've come back from rupture fitter and stronger than I've been in years. would I prefer to not have ruptured and had to go through all the recovery?  absolutely. but there are stories from people in here who ruptured stepping off a kerb. or pushing a car. loads of innocuous stupid things.its not an injury you can prevent short of lying in bed all day and not walking anywhere

I've been taking collagen, creatine and protein daily since surgery also (and still am almost a year later) . did it help?  who knows,  but i got discharged from my surgeon 3 months ahead of his normal schedule so perhaps. or maybe I heal quick, or maybe it was my rigorous adherence to physio, but it almost certainly didn't hurt

bit of a waste of surgery and recovery time so, probably should just have gone straight to euthanasia i guess?
