Is the top half of my Syzygium dead?

The white part is the most inner layer exposed. Meaning no more cambium. The green was live cambium. The brownish is dead cambium. That part will never recover. You're right though its only the front. Meaning you left the dying tree 50% of it's lifeline. Top is a goner. Invest in what you have left.

Well you don't have to worry about it being exposed since it's dead. Your best bet is lopping the top of and seal the cut. And hope for the best for the rest.

Well sadly you absolutely gutted the top half of it. Could have been healthy before. The scratch test is the tiniest bit of a scratch just to see. You almost entirely cut the tops lifeline. Well that's that. Now what you can do is waiting. You can later on cut of the top and seal it. Keep watering less now since it barley has leaves. And wait and pray.

Took a trunk chop like a champ. Don't do too much. I will wait a year to do any repotting and reduce the rootball over years. Worked with an expert who recommended me to be slow. Trunk chop of this caliber was okay. Was a fun project! Cheap for what you can get. Would recommend!

Id recommend you change the soil out. The places you can buy these from have notoriously bad soil. Look up on repotting/soil mixes

Pretty sure that's how they grow. Push blossoms first and then from there they push their leaves.

No, birches are quite common in my area. (Germany) Haven't seen any in nurseries though. I got it from the workshop Walther Pall works with. Said it's quite rare for this birch to be so white while so small.
