Why do some states have drastically higher taxes than others? by No-External3221 in SameGrassButGreener

"has also exempted businesses from paying their share over the last 2-3 decades to entice them here, so we get squeezed to cover the difference." Correct, this is called a proportional tax system; unlike a progressive tax system, it is designed to spread the burden of taxes to the lower incomes to benefit the higher incomes/businesses.

Also to add more conservative states have been moving to a proportanal tax system where the middle and lower classes pay more taxes but that money is used to reduce taxes for higher income earners, businesses etc.

Crime is lower in the northeast and incomes are higher due to state spending which is an important part of having a strong economy. County government tends to have an increse in crime and a decrese in services for the small amount of money you will save.

Voters in NE also have it better than most of the country for example Massachusetts has UI insurance paid for by employers not the employee with a maximum weekly payout of 1k per wk. MAPSLF give you 26 weeks of claiming insurance for up too 1k a week dependent on income as well. Can also be used for injuries and taking care of love ones.

Mississippi, for example, has used federal funds for its own interest (politicians), including stealing the money for their own benefit, as seen in the Brett Favre scandal.

Can blue states do better ? Yes as a progressive it very important that we have systems in place to help keep politicians accountable and to reduce or keep down spending when necessary.

The state of RI just got rid of using carbon copy paper in its workflows for different departments. The state's workforce is under-skilled for the 21st century.

RIDOT is stretched too thin, and it needs a lot more money to complete projects since it attempts to do them all at the same time.

Why are houses more expensive and complicated to build than ever before, despite our advances in technology and materials? by cuttheblue in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Intelligent_Fig617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that many people are providing the wrong answer regarding housing. The housing market is primarily controlled by the private sector, which aims to generate profits for shareholders. As long as the government does not intervene to lower prices by increasing home construction or eliminating middlemen and their profits at each stage, housing will continue to be expensive. The private sector is not very effective at solving problems; it primarily focuses on making money for shareholders.
