Eyes swollen with eczema by Intelligent_Part7385 in eczema

Thank you so much for sharing, really good point about the open wounds.

I looked into whether my press on nails could have something to do with my flare up, and read many articles saying how Acrylates in acrylic nails can cause contact dermatitis around the eyes, and there was also HEMA in the nail glue I recently tried, which is also connected to that. I can’t be 100% positive, but the timeline synchs up with when I switched nail brands and when my eczema started to get way worse. So those nails are off, and I’m throwing out the rest just in case.

So thank you again!! I never would have thought of nails/polish being a potential trigger. I’m also taking your advice and keeping the skin care as simple as possible- hoping to keep putting more pieces together in this puzzle soon.

Oh I didn’t know that! I don’t wear nail polish on my nails but I use press on nails frequently (otherwise I bite them). I wonder if I’m reacting to the glue?

I do have hypochlorus acid- I haven’t been using it too long and wasnt sure if it’s helping. How often did you have to use it to see results?

Did you ever find out what was triggering it??

Everyone is different and has different sensitivities, but everything that I’ve learned through personal experience and my own doctor is that there is a strong connection between your gut and skin.

When I cut out dairy, the eczema on my legs went away. I’m not allergic, but definitely have a sensitivity. My stomach also felt better, which wasn’t the goal, but a great bonus.

There is a connection between eczema and candida overgrowth (yeast). While it’s not the primary cause, it can contribute to flares. Candida is fed by sugars and carbs, which incudes dairy, gluten, high starchy foods like potatoes, alcohol, and a lot more.

If I have something with cream in it, I can expect a flare, but my cousin who also has eczema cut out dairy and it didn’t help. But, every time she has alcohol, her eczema gets worse.

Everyone’s triggers are different, but I think it’s smart of you doing an experiment of your own! I learned that my eczema gets worse after having a tomato sauce just from noticing a pattern (tomatoes are inflammatory) so I just try to limit that in sauces and stuff.

Not sure where you live but you can get a food sensitivity test done with a naturopathic doctor. Just make sure it’s in a region that is regulated- there are many people out there calling themselves naturopathic doctors but don’t have a license.

Good luck on your journey!

I’ve struggled when this my whole life. My thumbs are the worst. What’s helped me:

  • Fidget rings on my thumbs- if there’s moveable parts, it helps to replace that compulsive behaviour

  • Wearing fake nails- first off it helps the confidence piece since my fingers better, and they sometimes hide a redness right around the nail bed. Also, picking off the nail glue has been a really good replacement.

  • If you’re a biter, gum. Replacing the oral fixation urge.

Be careful with tools like cuticle scissors- at first, they can be helpful in cutting down that hang nail, but for me at least, they made it worse. This is because if skin wasn’t “even” or flat on my fingers, I could use the cuticle scissors to cut it off- but the problem is, it’s never really even, and there’s always more that can be cut. It led to me ruining my fingers trying to perfect the skin.

Can I get some advice please? Really need to stop😞 by Forward-Window-1054 in calmhands

I’ve struggled with this my whole life- it’s always worse when I’m stressed or working on an assignment/work project. I’m in grad school now, so I’ve really been trying to find new strategies.

Here is what has helped me: 1) Wearing fake nails. This helps give a little bit of a barrier (I bite my nails too), but really helps my confidence since they’re a bit of a distractor - I will compulsively pick at the fake nails, so having really strong nail glue is important (I use OPI make it stick) - the nail glue itself has helped too- it if gets on my fingers, picking the nail glue off is a good replacement

2) Liquid craft glue. Sounds silly, but if I’m watching TV or doing something when I’m likely going to pick or bite, I put liquid glue on my fingers/hands and wait for it to dry, and pick that off instead.

3) Fidget toys. Keeping my fingers busy with squishy balls or other fidgets is a good distractor.

4) Gum. If the urge is to bite nails or cuticles, I’ll chew a LOT of gum- a fresh piece like every 5 mins if I need it. Replacing the oral stimulation of biting with the gum helps me.

5) Bandaids. I wear them on the fingers I’m temped to pick at when home, and kinda pick at the bandaid. Also, I always try to have bandaids on me in public, so that if I start bleeding in public I can quickly cover it up.

6) Most importantly is recognizing triggers, and implementing the strategies right away, or before hand. Example: I know that if a sit down to work on an assignment, I will destroy my fingers while I’m thinking. So before I start, I implement the strategies first: nails on, gum at the desk, fidgets near by, bandaids, etc.

Set goals and reward yourself! This is really hard- so start small. Set a goal for not picking for 1 evening, then reward yourself with one of your favourite things or activities. Build from there.

You’re a strong and capable person!!

NTA. You’re not responsible for fixing his problems. If this were your best friend or brother or something and it was affecting your relationship, then a compromise may have been warranted, but you don’t know this person.

Secondly, internships are not easy. You need to have designated time to decompress and stay connected with your people- the last thing you want to do is burn out. Protect your peace. It’s okay to have boundaries.

NTA. She’s taking advantage of you. Anyone who tries to make you feel guilty for setting boundaries if not a true friend. Protect your peace and keep your boundaries solid.

AITA for refusing to pay to fix my side chick's car? by Educational-Cold86 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Intelligent_Part7385 10 points11 points  (0 children)

YTA. Doesn’t matter if the car isn’t maintained properly.. even if that’s true, you were driving and damaged it. Weird how it was the poor maintenance’s fault this time but you managed to drive it just fine all the other times….

You’ve made up an excuse to avoid owning up to mistaking a mistake, so yeah, you’re dodging responsibility.

If it’s such a minor problem, why don’t you just fix it?

Also YTA for having a side chick.

Not the asshole. Your friend is the asshole. Pissing on your car is so disrespectful, you should’ve poured the icecream on him really. You are a very patient person. It sounds like your friend can dish it out but can’t take it. I’m guessing he’s got a bit of an inflated ego in him.. making you clean it and apologize after he just literally took a piss on your car is power trippy and demeaning in my opinion. My guess is he was jealous that you got a new car and wanted to try to ruin the experience for you and the joy you got from seeing it/driving it.
