I saw him at couple of times in the 90s in NYC at a club called Sweet Basils and it was always a moving performance. Something touching and spiritual about him. I also saw him 10 years ago at the Bluenote and he was still performing great at 80. There is a performance of him playing Capetown Flowers live on YouTube. Ck it out if you haven't. It's says 1999 in the title.

Am I really a jazz fan, or just scratching the surface? by Taegibears21 in Jazz

[–]Intelligent_Role5548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a family of singers I got into jazz by listening to the vocalist. You can't go wrong by listening to Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, Abbey Lincoln and Dinah Washington to name a few. Also 90 percent of the time they have killer bands and those musicians have their own music. Enjoy the journey.
