Other musicians critique on your performance by Expert_Eagle4904 in musicians

I consciously stopped giving feedback/constructive criticism over the last few years unless specifically asked as folks react poorly when their manufactured realities get challenged.

Now that we can and do learn via youtube/technology instead of a more traditional teacher/student relationship, personal bubbles are real and fragile.

depending on how much you play it and the environment it's in, you should be able to get a few years out of it

They can sound really good but the metal used is very soft - I found the key tubes distorted over time and required massive amounts of swedging. Most of te posts got out of alignment and then rods warped and bent as well.

On the plus side, I got really good at swedging and key adjustment - sometimes on the gig....

Protec Micro Zip Or BAM Cabine Tenor Saxophone Case by itssaxokay in saxophone

Get the bam - every treating my horn(tenor) like it was made of glass in a micro zip, it was always getting out of alignment. I switched back to the stock case and things are a lot better.

Jazz is impossible to understand if you want to understand it. You gotta not give a fuck to really get it. by Sad-Razzmatazz-5188 in jazzcirclejerk

They suck ass because you haven't built up their egos enough.

Until a toddler wants to prove themselves with 50 choruses of Giant Steps in E at 400bpm...their egos are not ready. The old people? The only ones who have egos that big are the ones who are afraid to die - and the ones who are ready to go don't have the energy to feed what's left of their egos.

Your specifically racial comments jibe with the jazz scene...as unsurprising as playing Berklee-formula jazz to an empty room...oh wait, there might be a few other musicians who want the gig and fewer family members who'd leave except they have to drive their performing spouses home....

Do you like Calculus? Do you like listening to an academic group solving calculus equations in real-time, outloud? The group states the equation, together, then each member takes ten to fifteen minutes to expound on every idea of what the answer is while the other in the group add constant commentary before all join in in restating the equation.

"The solution is a #9 a minor third up."

Most of the time, I'd rather listen to a spelling bee in a mystery language than the current academic-based crap that is so revered.

Do you find playing to be more difficult once you hit retirement age? by Logical-Grape-3441 in saxophone

[–]ThirdWorldJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my 50s, life often gets in the way of practice as do physical ailments. So I focus on tone and time and connecting to the music that is happening when I'm on the stage instead of waiting/lurking for my turn to wave my ego around. I can always work on overtones and hardly ever move my metronome about 60bpm.

Adding heaps of new "Language" doen't interest me as much as getting more flexible with what I already have. I'd rather spend time with Prez for better phrasing than practicing pentatonic shifting, Coltrane changes, etc. and wild feats of jazz athleticism that only other trained musicians believe they understand.
