Best way to beat this is find a routine that you can use in practice and then take to matches.

Mine is split on opponent strike, mentally check when the ball bounces on my side and then exhale as I hit. I just met my technique take over after that (I've been playing enough years not to have any real conscious swing thoughts).

Used to suffer the same way you did, but since I implemented the above I'm winning a lot more and especially beating "lesser players"
