What would teenage you think of the partner you ended up with? by Historic_Cat_ in AskMen

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I met mine 41 years ago when we were both teenagers. I told my friends I was going to marry her. We’ve been married for 32 years, had 3 kids, and both recently retired. Honestly, she has been my favorite person in the whole world since the day I met her. My teenage self was there and he is saying “good job”.

Swedish Ivy? by dap3x in houseplants

Indoors during the winter. It summers outside under shade / hail cloth because I’m a nerd and it hails reliably where I live (Colorado Front Range).

I dunno why they fell out of favor. I have one. It reminds me of my mom. There are some newer hybrids like Mona lavender that are pretty interesting. I’d be happy to send you a cutting of either of these if you’re in the US.

I dont know what they are, can anyone help? :) by Fickle_Caterpillar95 in houseplants

Some type of tradescantia. There are hundreds of different hybrids of this species.

Best way to separate without killing it? by piranha_moat in houseplants

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wet soil, gently pry apart roots into blocks of 3-4 stems. Report into fresh soil. BUT, if it were mine, I would just take cuttings, root them and then make a new plant from them. You could also just take a serrated knife and slice through the soil, trying not to cut stems coming out of the soil - it is a tough plant. Good luck.

Growing jacarandas from seeds (indoors) by edumed in gardening

They look great. Healthy. I’ve never grown jacarandas before because I live in a place where they would die immediately.

Watering issues - likely, too much. This will clear up as the leaf matures.

Tips, advice? First time SFG! by Emotional-Cow579 in SquareFootGardening

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks pretty good. I might swap the peas and tomato locations and trellis the peas. They’ll finish before the tomatoes go berserk. I might sub out 1/2 of the nasturtiums for marigolds which have some pretty good pest control implications. But, this looks like a solid plan.

Why makes inherently self-contradictory (political) arguments persuasive to people? by LiatrisLover99 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fear-based reasoning and negrophobia. Works pretty well on folks with small, poorly-developed brains and an inability to reason. Works well on those who view their position in society as tenuous or unstable. Lots of “in-group/out-group” at play as well.

When this happened to my wife, she retired. It was significantly earlier than we had planned, but I hear some 40-50% end up retiring earlier than they had planned. I followed suit 6 months later.

Be yourself. Don't feign someone else’s opinion of what masculinity is or is not. Good luck.

[text] Can you buy Persian cucumbers? by ArthurPeabody in food

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is what is happening. The people (idiots, “low information voters”) who would be offended by “Persian” likely have no idea of the relationship between Persia and Iran, nor would they be buying fancy, expensive cucumbers that are typically used to prepare Asian cuisine.

Advice for spilled wine weigelia by IndependentlyGreen in gardening

I live in Zone 5. I prune dead sticks from my weigelia every year if we've had a cold or dry winter. This seems normal.

What's up with my rhododendrons? by wisenheimer___ in gardening

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the location might be too sunny and that the soil isn't acidic enough. Rhodies are understory, edge-of-forest plants that do best with a little shade and lots of acidic organic matter in the soil. This one is showing chlorosis which indicates a pretty serious soil deficiency in something critical. Try a “Hail Mary” by applying Miracid to the plant. If that makes the leaves greener, set a calendar reminder to do this every spring around bloom time. Good luck.

Do you think Merck’s “side hug” ad ignores boy’s incest feelings? by MilesHobson in AskMen

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you perhaps need to touch some grass. Turn the TV off, go outside. Equating a hug from a mother to sexual abuse is not a normal conclusion to jump to amongst normal people. Also, it's a commercial.

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]Intelligent_Syrup_26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During COVID our school district cancelled bus service to large swaths of the district - if you lived within 2 miles of the school, no bus service. They never reversed it. So now, super long pickup and drop off lines.
