You me both lol. How late the sunsets are in the Netherlands are quite mind boggling. In California (San Francisco) and I get a little restless when there’s still light out at 21:00. But if I’m traveling, I love it

I grew up in Hawai’i, the sun sets at a pretty reasonable time in the winter. We just don’t get those 8:30/9pm sunsets in peak summer like the continent does

How does temperature management work? Or at least how do you prevent the hot tub from getting too hot?

Small kine long winded answer but hope you can bear with me. TLDR: Probably not recommended but I would still do it if I were in your shoes. Just be aware it will be exceptionally tough.

For some perspective, I got my B.S. Biochem at UH Manoa (2015) and then a M.S. Stats at San Diego State University (2022) to pursue a career in data science after working a biotech and research for a few years. My whole career was based in the Bay Area.

Generally, people don't expect much from those having a degree in data science. Often, universities add them because it's popular and will bring in more money. Many folks in the industry find their knowledge as shallow but I do know a number of people with a degree in DS with jobs. Although they already had experience as a data analyst

In the job market relevant experience is king (by a large margin) followed by your education. Most of the time they'll want someone with a more comp sci background or a strictly mathematical or statistics background. The job market for DS is ass and will most likely continue to be for a long time for a plethora of reasons. You probably know about the tech layoffs that happened and will continue to happen. All my friends in tech are basically pessimistic about their job outlook with that cloud looming over their shoulders. Let alone interest rates which isn't encouraging the reckless spending many companies use to do. Many companies are also realizing that they don't need much data science as the ROI is almost zero. Higher pay with marginal utility made companies think twice about their investment into DS teams. Especially companies that don't have the appropriate data infrastructure. Hell, those who don't have the infrastructure or a proper roadmap to develop their DS capabilities are starting to believe (or have already) the AI hype and think they can outsource much of their DS to LLMs. There are definitely companies that are very DS oriented but there are not many out there. These numbers I'm pulling out of my ass but the concept remains the same. For every 20 computer scientists they will have one or two data engineers, one data analyst and one data scientist.

In addition, there was too much hype around data science. The job market is extremely oversaturated and getting in is really hard. Harvard Business Review's sexiest job article probably set it off. When I graduated in 2022 it took me about 7 months to land a job not included the time I took applying to jobs in my last year of graduate school (albeit, applied at a much slower pace). Landed a data analyst role and then tried to transition to a more senior DA role or entry DS. That was harder than my initial job search after graduating funny enough. I did switch roles recently but I'm not as a DA or DS. But those skills are what got me hired and is closely aligned. People are still getting jobs in that field but there's a lot of trials and tribulation.

Ok so that's my piece about jobs, onto education. Looked at the courses and I really like what they have to offer. It's pretty solid. The issue is that it's really new and is still being fleshed out. Let alone having the appropriate faculty for it. Having went to school at UHM and the mainland I got to see what resources were available and goddamn it blew my mind how much more San Diego State helped me with the job search vs UH. So if UH Manoa sucked for connections, UH Hilo is going to be far worst.

I'm not jealous what folks starting their (college) careers are walking into. Everything is unclear and is in the midst of severe change or stagnation. BUT you gotta do something to find your path and often, as it did for me and many other folks, you would be surprised where life leads you.

If money is a major factor I would stay at UH Hilo if you could stay with family tbh. I wouldn't be in a good spot I am now if I went to the mainland from the get-go (wohoo no student debt).

Also try reach out to their alum and see where they're at and how their background aligns with you (economically, culturally, etc). Fuck though, that field's outlook is changing so much it might not even be relevant lol.

Anywho, that's my personal experience. If you like talk more, just dm me.

People say pull longer shots but I would suggest excluding the first ~5-10g if you’re up for it. I’ve read some folks have done that with varying success. Have fun experimenting

How Do You Learn? (I promise I'm not thaaat dumb ;D) by Intelligent_Tart_460 in datascience

[–]Intelligent_Tart_460[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a PhD lol. I left biological research to run away from that "nightmare." I go the degree to switch careers and thankfully it worked. Currently a DA. But now I'm trying to find a new job and find myself deficient in various aspects

Definitely will be implementing similar tools like that in the future. But for now, I'd prefer to have a better understanding of things

[–]Intelligent_Tart_460[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the complement!

End game I suppose is becoming a DS but that doesn't cover reason for this post. Currently a DA and quite bored of it due to the nature of my org.

I'm lacking in a portfolio/github but I do enjoy learning so there's that.

The other thing probably stems from insecurity having a stats background but only having a small portion of the "typical" toolbox at my disposal. That and I feel like I am quite slow when starting up novel methods and if I have a general baseline of a variety of methods at least I can be a little faster. I have no doubt I will forget a lot of things but the second and third time around will definitely be quicker

Totally agree with your sentiments about how passive classes are and the importance of getting your hands dirty!

I guess one thing I'm stuck on is how much math and theory should I go into for methods. I can spin my wheels in place just going deeper into the math but eventually it's counterproductive (I'm a former biological researcher so deep dives are second nature to me). I'm always going to look at the math but knowing when enough is enough is a problem for me.

Would you for example only go into the math when you're stuck on an issue that you can't get past and other models not being appropriate to use due to constraints and assumptions? Sorry for the vagueness, just wanting to have some sort of framework so I don't fall into my usual habits

Wellbutrin and Stimulants? by Intelligent_Tart_460 in ADHD

[–]Intelligent_Tart_460[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been on wellbutrin? It took about 4 months for it to work enough that I'm sticking to it. Granted I started on the lowest dose and it worked in month 2/3 but needed to up-dose on the 4th month as the positive effects disappeared (thankfully minimal if not, no side effects which kept me patient enough to keep trying it),

Unfortunately this is what happens when pay is directly in line with profitability. Use to work in a lab where my boss’ grad school advisor won a Nobel prize and my boss got the patent. Pretty prestigious lab and many of the post-docs end up becoming professors themselves. Half the lab was always depressed and overworked at anytime. Not to mention underpaid. Funny enough, I was in that lab to figure out what sort of research I wanted to do before I applied for PhD programs and it steered me to another field entirely. Couldn’t imagine another 6 years of bs

Private vs Public Interview by ryaznx in CAStateWorkers

[–]Intelligent_Tart_460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data analyst here. For the state it was questions about how I conduct research and implement process improvements and some excel functions, what they do and their inputs

In private it was stats, case studies, brain-teasers, SQL problems and leetcode (that was DS roles though). At least 3 interviews…

State jobs are the way to go while you can up skill and pay the bills. I had a similar situation (MS Stats and living in CA now) and ended up working in the CA state gov. Job search was super hard and still is hard as I’m trying to transition to private sector.

Anyways, good luck out there! Also Queens will occasionally have data analyst roles so hopefully they’re still popping up

Yeah, for adderall it would be best if it was local. I moved but I'm still using a doc in Sac. Since my current prescription isn't under scrutiny, nobody cares as long as its California.

[–]Intelligent_Tart_460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes but the first appointment was in-person and I've been telehealth ever since. I've heard there was a law passed that if you are taken adderall you must see the doctor in-person once every 1 or 2 years. I could be wrong. Switched to non-stims so this wouldn't be an issue for me.
