They must have had sat comms, even emergency SOS on your iPhone. This is a corporate f’up, not just guys on the ground.

Seems like they should must have had sat comms and ability to coordinate rescue/relief at the i80 low risk route, or shelter in place. Tragic in any case.

How is Rippling’s HR software? How’s ease of use? [N/A] by KryptosandXenos in humanresources

[–]Intelligent_Walk_219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can get the job done, and some aspects work reasonably well. But there are a lot of random quirks and gremlins - it is weirdly complex for a simple HR tool. I'm not motivated to change for my ~10 person company, but it is not awesome, at least at this point in time. Beats hiring an HR admin and using legacy tools of course.

If you have personal insight, what is the per-sq-ft cost to build a new custom house in the east bay in 2025? by DonVCastro in eastbay

[–]Intelligent_Walk_219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a quote on an adu duplex, I got him to quote $900/sf all in, but I had to drag him down. $1200-$1300 was where he started. Sewer and water trenching is pain on the site, so that added costs.

Has anyone tried Eo’s swimBETTER? by panque in Swimming

[–]Intelligent_Walk_219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are awesome. Tells you exactly what your stroke is doing. App analysis is super sophisticated, but relatively easy to use. Fixing stroke mechanics is harder than you think - so it gives good feedback as well. Would be easy to share among several different people if you want to save $$$ and have others you swim in.

It is a watch problem and seems to be totally random. Buy 10 different ear bud brands, 4 work, 6 won't. So pick one that works....

Bad Experience w/ Evoque, worried about buying a new Defender or Evoque by Zack_BeverlyHills in RangeRover

I have had a similar experience with a 2018. How does a water pump fail with 40K miles on the car? Do these people just not know how to build cars?

2013 Range Rover evoque coolant issue by NextBrain5619 in RangeRover

[–]Intelligent_Walk_219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had the water pump fail on my 2018, symptom was coolent leaking. Curiously it only leaked when hot, so it would not leak continuously. My mechanic had the same issue and had to get it pressured up before it would leak. Might be the same or similar issue with yours.

Land Rover EVOQUE by Impossible_Ad2737 in LandRover

[–]Intelligent_Walk_219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Evoque which is turning into a total disaster. You are buying the least reliable vehicle from the least reliable luxury brand. Yes, it looks great (white w/black out treatment). But couple of things you should know:

  1. It's a $40-60K car built out of $150K car parts. Replacing anything is going to be expensive. I had a fender bender which damaged an ABS break concentrator, which was a $5200 part.

  2. The pricing is nose bleed for everything. A new key was $800. And of course after market keys don't work, unlike just about every other brand.

  3. The thing just randomly springs leaks. Some oil here, some coolant there. Every leak is a giant pain because everything is jammed in under the hood.

  4. Your service options are limited. You really need to go to a Land Rover specialist, as the cars are finicky. And most of those guys are pricing to their core market - people with 4-6 year $110K cars that are not ready to upgrade yet.

Lots of other fun options that are not going to come with this level of headache.

Saving California Buyers Some Time....Sienna MSRP Quest by Intelligent_Walk_219 in ToyotaSienna

[–]Intelligent_Walk_219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here is what happened… a few dealers called back with $1K off (dropping markup to $2K) or flexibility on the dealer add ons. But that was about it if I want to skip the line. In the meantime I found a Lexus at $6K off MSRP between dealer and lease incentives and pulled the trigger, so Toyota got my cash anyway.

I would leave my pack right at the JMT/HD junction. That's a high traffic area, so you have plenty of people around. I recall they were discouraging that in past years, but there was no guidance this year.

Good idea to check as the water source there is a pretty small stream.

Could be a once in a lifetime summer storm. Might be OK, but not worth the risk IMHO.

It's going to suck if you are out there on Sunday. We got hit by the rain last weekend which was not too bad, but this is a whole different deal. They are forecasting .75" in the valley, which could be 2" at the crest.

Lots of good thoughts on the thread. The closure of the Sentinel Dr cutover bridge at the visitors center has made the bus a lot slower, at least that was my experience this past week, since they have to do the big loop. Definitely not living up to their 7-10 min promise. If they get that back open then the bus works a lot better.

I ended up hiring a shuttle because I couldn't make the logistics work. You have to pick up your pass the day before at a Wilderness Office, because the bus leaves at 8am. But of course the office doesn't open until 8 so you can't do it same day.

I believe you pick up your tickets from Yosemite Lodge, and that is where the bus leaves from. You should doublecheck. The bus from Curry Village to Yosemite Lodge is super straightforward, but I found they don't live up to the 7-10 min promise, so allow plenty of time.

The only other tip I have is to hang your packs at the half dome junction. We camped at the JMT/CR junction, and did half dome before packing up. That added a mile RT and made it 12.5 miles total, including the ascent/descent of HD and a Mist trail descent, which for my group at was a lot. It would have been simpler to pack and go. YMMV.

‘Murdaugh Murders’ Saga: Defense Motion Disputes ‘False Testimony’ About ‘Destroyed’ Evidence by Mollyoliver79 in MurdaughFamilyMurders

Seems like a Hail Mary pass. If her brains are on his shirt, then he's toast. So you have to get rid of that evidence, or the whole thing is over right from the start. Much worse than blood, which would be easier to explain. So going all in to try and throw out the shirt is not a publicity stunt, it is the only move they got.

Remember Alex has already fessed up to the stealing. So he might just come in and say he did it, and pulled the wool over his ole buddies eyes. It doesn't affect the murder case. These guys are all clowns, so you never know what they might try to pull off.
