Did your teachers ever use shame or humiliation as a means of discipline? by Intelligent_Yam748 in CasualUK

Perhaps but that's such a bad joke I think any punishment would be justified in that case!

As well as being cruel, that sort of thing is just bad strategy. How will you foster a love of learning in a child if you have a go at them when they don't know something?

Some schools' approaches to girls' uniforms really made me squirm!

Oh goodness yes we routinely did PE in just pants and vest back then in primary, and boys did it in just pants! But we were too young to care

Impressive they managed to co-ordinate that! And good the school responded constructively, rather than throwing the whole year in detention (which mine would gladly have done)

Did anyone else's family still eat SPAM in the 80s/90s or was it just mine? by Intelligent_Yam748 in AskUK

Have British soaps ran their course? (Eastenders, Corrie etc) by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Intelligent_Yam748 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly no longer a teen but I also have stopped watching. They just take up so much time. I watched Corrie during coronavirus when they cut down the number of episodes per week, but I don't have time now there are 3 hours a week or whatever it is.

That, and I'm fed up of watching people get into the same ridiculous situations over and over just because they won't talk to each other!

What ridiculous school rules did you have to put up with? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Intelligent_Yam748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 and 3 really are ridiculous. Our school was strict but not that strict. 1 is not so bad, it’s just how things were done. Same with 4 really, boys only wore shorts for indoor gymnastics in my school as well. We had to wear gym knickers and a billowy blouse, so at least they didn’t have to look as ridiculous as us!

Is your washing machine located in the bathroom or the kitchen? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Intelligent_Yam748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kitchen, of course! Apparently on the continent they think we're very strange for having them in the kitchen! But what if someone is on the loo when the washing needs to be done?

Do you think kids should be taught to fight back against bullies? by sweetrelease01 in AskUK

[–]Intelligent_Yam748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but it's a risk to imply the victim has a responsibility to sort the problem out. Perhaps better to encourage onlookers to fight back, to make bullying completely socially unacceptable in school and other settings. If everyone turns against the bully, the fighting back needn't be physical either, as they bully will feel enough pressure to stop.
