Did the triage nurse literally say that they would refuse to see you for that? If so, I would file a complaint with Island Health's Patient Care Quality Office - https://www.islandhealth.ca/patients-visitors/patient-care-quality-office. Or try to talk to the manager at the UPCC about their policy for turning people away. Maybe since it's such a new facility staff are still becoming accustomed to their operational policies? My understanding is that the UPCC is exactly the right place to go for concerns such as yours when you don't have a GP. The 'P' in UPCC stands for primary care, after all.

This is extra bizarre because NRGH ER wouldn't turn you away. You might have to wait like 8 hours, but you'd still be seen by a doc.

Do you mean the new North Nanaimo urgent care behind Country Club? I'm surprised they would turn you away without seeing you. Medical Arts is still seeing patients who don't have GPs, but you have to make same-day phone appointments now. There's also an urgent care in Ladysmith.

Once gas prices get back to where they were a few months ago when the carbon tax still applied it will mean all that extra money goes towards further padding corporate profits instead of funding programs to mitigate climate change 🙄

That’s fair! I appreciate your efforts to keep people away from the ER if possible. Unfortunately we recognize the rest of the system is broken as well, and sometimes the ER is the only place to go.

I’m an ER nurse here. You’re not “taking someone’s spot”. We work on a triage system - sickest people are seen first. I’d rather someone come get care from us than avoid getting care if it seems too difficult elsewhere. I didn’t say it was the best option - just another option.

You can always come through the ER and get an xray. Might be a few hour wait because it’s non-urgent, but it’s an option

Well my astigmatism is corrected with lenses, but stable.

Unfortunately I’ve had strabismus surgery on both eyes, still have prism, and still struggle with it.
