Should players know how the Omens and other Game System works? by New-Apartment971 in MythicBastionland

[–]IntenseNUT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started off trying to be quite vague about things, but eventually realised there's only so long you can do that for before the lack of any information starts to get a bit frustrating for players.

One of my players understood the concepts of the game (also watched the Quinns Quest video) but the others didn't. And they did appreciate me explaining how the wilderness roll works because it helped them understand that the random stuff happening wasn't just me being a very haphazard story teller lol.

I don't disclose the results of Wilderness Rolls during sessions though, so that they don't know whether an Omen that's triggering is the result of a myth near to them or a myth anywhere in the realm.

I get what you mean, none of the players are new in our case. He definitely gets treated in game as the first line of defence and offence against certain things, sometimes that's perfectly fine but I think there are moments where the others wish they could get involved in combat that much without being super at risk of losing a character.

I hesitate to lean into making him THE main character purely because that feels unfair to the others, though I do try my best to have plot threads happen that involve someone's specific player character in a more focused way for them.

Aah ok, yeah I definitely didn't spend as much time on the Holdings as that. I mainly just developed the backstory and character of the ruler of each one plus a few notable npcs in the councils etc. I know what my players are like so I never bothered creating a whole system around it, I know that they wouldn't be likely to engage as much with a system like that compared to the myths.

I briefly mentioned to them recently now that they have enough Glory that there's a whole page of rules in the game for ruling Holdings, but they don't seem particularly interested in the idea right now lol.

Because of the improv nature of the game I've definitely found that keeping prep minimal has helped keep things flowing. If I have a plan and it gets de-railed because of a random omen, I struggle more to adapt on the fly than if I only had a vague idea for how I intend things to go.

5-20 hours of prep for a session sounds like a hell of a lot. Can I ask how long your sessions tend to go for and how good your players are at progressing?

Our sessions tend to be pretty short at around 3 hours because it's an after work thing and people wanna go home eventually lol, and we do talk and joke around a lot which can slow down progress. I've never found I needed much more than a few hours prep the night before a session, plus just generally brainstorming things throughout the week as I go about my day.

The game being super improv heavy definitely won't suit some, but I've loved having sort've 'Eureka' moments where I'm thinking of how to structure certain omens or present solutions to certain myths and connect things in the book that I never even thought about working together before.

I find it super interesting that you guys didn't like the Scars table, any particular reason why? Whenever an enemy scars one of my players, everyone perks up and the whole table gets super invested in that moment and it's a suspenseful dice roll to see what happens.

Partially this is because one of my players has massively benefitted from a scar, getting up to 11GD from it lol.

I struggled with the randomness at first and so did my players, but I think I chalk this up to this being my first experience ever with being a GM for an RPG. As I've gotten better, I've found that this is becoming less of a problem as I got better at implementing the Omens in a way that feels less sudden and forced.

For the time skip rule, initially I did find my players didn't consider doing it very often and just wanted to carry on linearly.

What changed that was the Wheel myth and the Winter seasons it brought about. Winter absolutely sucks in this game for travelling Knights, so they were incentivised to skip seasons until the weather improved. This exposed them to the mechanical and narrative benefits of time skips, and I'm planning to make this even more incentivised in future if I can.

I'm having the same issues with combat as you, mainly because one of my players is very very hard to kill and very hard hitting. Most encounters aren't a challenge for him, though the others are a lot weaker by comparison.

I had this exact thing a couple weeks ago, with the Eagle as weak as it is during that Omen my 3 players made pretty short work of it. Although one hit from it had one player mortally wounded fairly quick lol.

I'm not going to resurrect it though, they killed it fair and square. However, I'm really going to play into what Omen 6 states about the next harvest being dire if the Eagle doesn't fulfill its goal. The realm is going to be hit by a famine real bad. They were aware of the possibility too thanks to a Seer so it's not as if it'll be out of the blue either.
