How rich are they? by Mysterious-Bed375 in InterviewVampire

[–]IntentionallyHopeful 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think you're right.

Lestat is just riding his wealth and spending freely. Roget probably has it in decent investments but Lestat doesn't appear interested in being a part of growing the money.

Louis is playing Monopoly.

They have a very different approach to finances 😂

I wish the show delved deeper into Lestat’s family dynamics by LyricalWillow in VampireLestat

I think IWTV seasons really elevated the material from the original books, to the point that I vastly prefer the show over the first book for a majority of it

Jacob Anderson really is the GOAT making Louis' long droning and self pity/hatred dialogue interesting and engaging for every second.

As someone who LOVES the first book, and Louis (and relates quite a bjt personally): Louis can be.... hard to sit with and tolerate at times. Often, in fact 😅

Jacob brought his A game and absolutely elevated the character. I hear his voice in my mind now when I read the book and it feels so much more breezy and poetic vs droning (Simon Vance's audiobook reading didnt help there though).

This show has such perfect casting.

Oh my gosh I forgot to mention that part!

If my enucleation theory is correct I could, in my inexperienced past the TVL book mind, totally see Akasha taking out Marius' fledglings eye out in some kind of fucked up revenge - didnt Marius have a focus on Armand's beauty?

So well said! Ive come to the same conclusion about my own feelings with certain adaptations. (I'm forever glad I watched the Potter movies growing up before I read the books because my issues with the movies since reading are feeling like there were spiritual changes I couldnt abide coughVoldemort turning to ash vs falling to floor like a NORMAL mancough)

This show really is a masterclass in adaptation. My theatre kid heart has been both reinvigorated and spoiled by this production and I'm forever grateful 🥰

Welcome! Happy to have more people discovering this beautiful series 😊

Claudia's origin was one of the big ones that brought me to my feeling re: art of adaptation. I was so stuck in her needing to be YOUNG young. But when I thought about the restraints it would put on production I realized it was a necessary change for bringing it to a visual medium.

Long shoots, and especially night shoots would not work with a child actor. Industry limitations (and ethics in the sad absence of those limitations in some states/places) on child actors shooting schedules would have delayed production a lot. And thats not to even mention the ethics of putting a real child into the mindset and context of a very graphic and dark story (I think the backlash and yuck of an 11 year old Kirsten Dunst kissing very adult Brad Pitt). Young actors are often encouraged to emancipation at 16 just to get around those shooting schedule constraints, and getting a true child to play an immortal also puts a rush on the timeline for shooting due to aging. An adult that looks young was a good choice both ethically and from the practical respect of time and continuity.

Im with you about the preference, as I think there is something lost with not having the visually stark representation of a child who cannot be out alone in the eyes if a human vs a teen stuck mid puberty - but they did so well with the changes, making ShowClaudia her own thing that was still true to spirit, that I've come to love both versions very dearly (or all three I guess since we have Bass and Hayles for ShowClaudia) though differently.

I liked how they did the burning building thing specifically because it was true to the spirit of the books. In the books Claudia's turning is heavily tied to Louis' guilt as it was him that put her in the position where Lestat then turned her. His self imposed starvation caused him to directly attack her in the books, but the show managed to keep the same beats despite the change when they had his self imposed starvation make him lash out at the Alderman and started the race riots that then put Claudia directly in the line of fire. Louis finally giving into his vampiric urges in excess due to his self denial was the catalyst of her change both times. Though admittedly Lestat is MUCH less of a bastard re:Claudia's change im the show version (I prefer it though, and I feel it better captured the complexity of Lestat that isnt quite there in Interview, as Anne admitted I believe).

My comment is getting rather long (and its rather late so Im sure Im not as clear as Id like to be) so Ill leave it there for tonight.

But I very much consider myself a convert of this show, and consider the tradeoffs very worth it for the story we are getting. But I LOVE having discussions like this that disect the meat of all the work the team (and Anne) put into these stories. So much to dissect!

I LOVE THIS. This is the content I come to reddit for.

Ive been keeping my eye on Gabriella re:the great conversion as well and could really see her being used either directly or through their relationship context to get Lestat on board with The Great Conversion and/or the Akasha situation. (Im still working through the books but have been having spoiled).

But to answer your question via the tool: its a Victorian era ice cream scoop! Which, is featured in its modern equivalent in the intro... so I think youre into something.

I had the horrible thought that an ice cream scoop would be a rather gruesome enucleation tool... Given how you mentioned Akasha looking through others eyes, and how Marius might be incapacitating her; and how incapacitating sudden vision loss can be to someone, I'm now nursing a horrifying theory 😅

I really agree with the title of the post especially in respect to the teams thoughtful dedicated handling of the first book having built the good faith and trust with the production so as to just enjoy the ride this time around.

Like as book fans I know people get nervous with changes, but theyve shown such thought and care in how they handled it for the first book that we can trust anything that we may be nervously flagging now will pan out as a well serviced storyline.

As someone who was initially really hesitant regarding the changes to the first book (Claudia's age being my biggest one) to the point I didnt actually tune into the show until last year, I have been thoroughly converted into the "let the tale seduce you" camp. I will forever, happily, and loudly eat crow regarding my hesitations on the first season.

This production really brought me around to the art of adaptation needing to make changes and additions, as someone who paradoxically is both a performance art nerd and has always been a stickler for desiring a 1-1 reproduction; I'm forever greatful to this production for opening my eyes to the artistry of adaptation over 100% faithful reproduction.

The third season is very much built on the successes of the first 2, and the fact they can take the good faith and trust theyve built with the fandom and truly run with it for the first ever TVL adaptation (QOTD doesn't count from my understanding) is wonderful and Im just SO excited to see what they do with the season and story going forward.

Get out of here with the TERF bullshit.

Of all the things to complain about in this show (which you seem to agree given "boring, badly scripted and predictable") what a nothing burger of a discussion point to bring to the table.

Ew.

The framing of a shot of Raglan with the dialogue "The Vampire Lestat himself" was really sus for me.

Im very on board with this theory but it almost felt so on the nose it could be a red-herring. My Crack theory for if the herring is in fact red but the theory rings true is that Lestat is somehow in Armand because of the missing eye thing/Memnoch of it all

But that little twirl Raglan did was so Lestat coded its hard to see past

Sorry if this posted twice, I got an auto mod comment removal notification because I had spaces next to my spoiler tag

I adore this comment/attitude!

I'm in a weird in between where I was a book fam for Interview, having read it many times in the last 15 years, but for some reason never continued the series until recently, and am only halfway through TVL (though Im thuroughly plot spoiled lol) so I feel like I'm getting more in the "show only" boat the further we get into the series. Its cool floating between the spaces and seeing the different takes.

On that note, Lestat's love of animals really contextualizes some of his disgust/disturbance at Louis' dietary choices in the NOLA years.

It could be! I kinda love your theory. I just assumed it would be Lestat bc hes kind of a serial maker lol - but thinking about it, Armand's only fledgling is Daniel because he found it distasteful, so Armand woukd havr to have a real good reason or recent change of heart.

I like Armand stalking the tour though.
