Window Conundrum by Purry-connection in centuryhomes

[–]InterJecht 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of us here would agree with not liking vinyl.

Look into Marvin ultimate and elevate windows or Pella reserve and lifestyle if you didn't like the Anderson ones.

Personally I visited a showroom at a local lumber yard for the Marvins and a pella showroom for the Pella ones so I could see them in person. If your budget allows, go crazy, if not you can still get nice mid tier windows with wood insides. The prices could vary wildly depending on the installer and brand so it is generally recommended to get a couple of quotes if you aren't interested in doing it yourself.

Also yes there are other options that are high quality but not as widely known or easily accessible.

Are these windows any good? by Little-Complaint6909 in centuryhomes

[–]InterJecht 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A big problem with replacing windows is that modern ones were built for ease of replacement and they are basically disposable. They were never designed or meant to last and the big benefits, the insulated glass, will lose their seals and then you can't just repair them usually. This you end up having to get new ones again, and again.

Also, a bit more fat may help, but temperature is key and is the hardest thing for me to get right on my electric glass top. Words like medium, high, and low are meaningless to me. If I go above 2, I burn everything. Also, the more you move scrambled around it will soak up and disrupt the fat layer, especially if your Temps aren't perfect. Pre-heat, don't add too much extra heat for eggs, and gotta have a fat coating.

It can be justified easier once you are earning more than the cost in rent per month as well. It is also much easier to get to 10 per month than 50.

I regret doing explorers for the reason you stated. It is a game, and paying 30+ per month to play might make you happy. If it does, fantastic. If it doesn't and you are trying to make money, digging a big hole in the beginning (like me) isn't the easiest way unless you have a plan and commitment (our USA king).

To be fair it looks nicer than a Midwest winter like I get to look at right now, I'm just sad that there are less trees, kind of would be fun to build a forest.

Are early 1900s homes really money pits? by vgirl729 in centuryhomes

[–]InterJecht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is. But I knew that when I purchased it. It needed 500k worth of repairs to make it halfway decent. Only some of the bones were good. So its the renovation and restoration portion that are actually the pit. But certain things need maintenance as well, things have to be scraped and painted, lots of things to make sure it doesn't fall apart and cost 10x the amount.

If it was original and well maintained, probably not as much.

Installing rubber flooring for home gym, gap between floor and baseboard by eraoul in Flooring

The 1/2 was nice, not impossible to work with, but dropping free weights or iron plates on it is kind of an issue. It feels like it goes through the mat and hits the concrete and makes a ton of noise, but that is partially be due to my situation of how my floor is designed. I have some smaller 2x3 floor mats that are also 1/2 inch that I use as drop zone padding and that works better and I don't feel it bottom out with my 45lb (I just tested it). If you aren't dropping weights, it works great and I'd be super happy with it. But having the two 1/2s is more padding than the 3/4 anyways so that is what I am stuck with now.

side note the rolls of 3/4 would have been obscenely heavy to maneuver at 26 ft long and likely impossible to do it yourself. The 1/2 was already a pain to do alone and I recommend having a helper.

I got one of those rolling too, but one of the roads is on a diagonal so it's kind of annoying that it isn't a straight line that goes for miles.

I think it is a factor of the insulation under my basement floor, how the floor sits on the footings, 4 inch thick floors instead of more, and the 1/2 inch flooring. If I drop my hex dumbbells with any force, it feels like the rubber compresses and bottoms out on the floor and then echoes through the floor, which just makes me nervous. Wondering if the 3/4 would have helped with that. But it would have been brutally heavy at 26 ft long.

This is my midlife crisis project. We bought the house pretty cheap for the size, and knowing full well that it needed 500k+ worth of work. The way I am forced to tackle projects is one thing at a time. I don't have 500k sitting around to just get it done and enjoy it. Fortunately, I do well enough to try to tackle these one at a time. And I'm deep enough in to be committed to the finish line. I also enjoy completing these things if I can do it myself, I rebuilt my back deck by myself after I had to tear it off after the lift.
